"Tucked away from hopping Smith St., it feels like a cozy country home, with bookshelves filled with wine bottles and a small bar for chatting up strangers," writes Shecky's about Black Mountain Winehouse, which was recommended to us by turcod. Erin Behan for Citysearch adds, "The interior--filled with small wooden tables--has the feel of an upstate farmhouse, and in fact the turn-of-the-century door came from one."

"In a kitchen smaller than most coat closets, chefs working in full view of patrons turn out simple epicurean fare: house terrine, white-bean crostini, and a selection of goat’s-milk cheese," writes Amanda Pressner for New York magazine. And Eat It: The Brooklyn Food Blog recommends the charcuterie plate, "an assortment of cured meats, pate, bread and olives. In addition to slices of crusty french bread were slices of Lard Bread, a local (Carroll Gardens) specialty. The meat was wonderful, the mustard was strong and the olives was spicy and briny." This seems like a small plates spot, but we're not so sure — can you make a meal of their $10 dishes, like mac n' cheese, panini, and swiss chard and ricotta pie? How would you rate this place?

After passing it a few times [in the day] and not realizing that it was a restaurant, my wife and I decided to check it out. We were very happy we did.

The food is excellent and the service was great as well. The only downside is, the mac and cheese is not as good as the yelp reviews say (I still prefer Bocca Lupo's).

This is an excellent off the beaten path pick!

I was there this weekend for a wine party. We didn't eat but the food looked and smelled amazing. The service was excellent and the place is so cute!

Had the absolute WORST service here. Hipster too busy to take our orders cos he's on the phone? check. Meat hidden in the bread but no apology for serving it to a vegetarian? check. Slow and attitudinous? double check!

As a wine lover I will say that this is the best wine bar that I know of in Brooklyn. Good selection of natural wines at fair prices. The place is lovely inside and on a quiet block - a fun night out especially in winter when the fireplace is going. Seems to attract all sorts of people too, which is nice. The food is more hit or miss. Sometimes excellent, other times average, sometimes sub-par. But it's worth going every now and then for the wine bar, and maybe a small plate.

I like it. The downside is that if you don't get a seat at the bar or a table, there's really no place to stand. We got the last two seats after some juggling of stools by the staff. Really great place during the winter, with the nice warm fire. Kind of a cozy lodge feel. Tons of great wines by the glass, with plenty of affordable options. Food is fairly simple, not a huge menu. More of a nibbles with your wine kind of place. They serve Mazzola's lard bread with food (which has nice big chunks of salami in it), which is delicious but obviously a turnoff for vegetarians. Small space with big adirondack chairs in front to sit on warmer night, and most certainly not the d-bag fest of nearby Gowanus Yacht Club. A nice mellow place.

Good wine, great atmosphere, and the two time I've been there, the service was very nice if extremely busy.

I love "the lodge" as we call it. The staff is great, super helpful, they know their wines & make great recommendations. I have never been for a meal exactly, but have gotten the mac n' cheese and a panini once. Both were alright, didn't really stand out but great to have as options when you're drinking lots and lots of wine!

I think the reason the Union st house (this weeks biggest sales) did not get $2m is because 2 door down from this joint.

Suprised by the negatives here. I live up the street and am always happy with wine, food and the busy service. Great room. Love this little boit.
