Taro Sushi

"At this no-frills cult spot, the fish is as pristine and skillfully prepared as at any of the expense-account sushi places in Manhattan," says the Village Voice. And Time Out New York says, "Chef-owner Yuji Sano trained at his parents’ restaurant in Tokyo (also called Taro) and at Manhattan’s Ise. He knows little things matter, like using freshly grated wasabi, and vigorously massaging octopus in brine until it bears no relation to the rubbery tako at most sushi joints."
"Taro aims to make exceptional quality comfortably affordable, and oft times, it succeeds. Tuna is rich; its texture, delicate. Sea urchin—usually best avoided—proves sweet and ocean-salty. The place to sit is at the bar, both for the chance to interact with chef Yuji Sano and because it allows you to eat his fine creations seconds after they're made, while the vinegar-seasoned rice is still warm," writes JJ Goode for New York magazine. Citysearch's Erin Behan adds, "Among the standard rolls, the fried oyster stands out, its piping hot center playing off bits of crunchy cabbage." How would you rate this place?

Best sushi restaurant in Brooklyn, hands down, and the best value sushi bar in NYC. (There are better sushi bars in NYC, but they cost $$$$.) Go on Fridays and Saturdays, when the selection of fish is at its best. (Much is flown in from Tsukiji.) The ankimo (monfish liver) is outstanding, and many of the rolls are the same quality as you would pay 3x more for in Manhattan.

I've never been. I LOVE sushi and usually go to a small place in the Village. I will definitely check out Taro.

I feared this day was coming. The secret is officially out on the best sushi in the Slope. No one else in BK comes close to the quality and artistry of Taro, and I sincerely believe that this place can hold its own against Manhattan's best. The fact that Taro is 20 yards from my front door is both a gift and a curse. But Brownstoner I implore you: take down this ROTD post IMMEDIATELY before the rest of the world finds out!

I've walked by this place a million times, but judging by the exterior had kinda written it off. It looks so shabby and uninviting.
I guess there's a reason they say not to judge a book by its cover.
I'll have to check it out!

Nice people, nice food. The place is a bit of a dump though, so you might want to pick up some goodies and eat at home, if you can't get a place at the sushi bar. I'm not sure I'd call it Brooklyn's best either, but if you don't want to schlep to Blue Ribbon or Ki, you'll find plenty to satiate your sushi jones.

Oh no! The secret is out! This is my everyday goto sushi spot. It is certainly not the spot for date night - you are there for the food. Omakasi all the way.

We love this place. While most Park Slopers think Geido or even Blue Ribbon are the places to go we always disagree. Taro is always our 1 and only choice for sushi. A little sparse on the decor but we always come away pleased. The last time we tried the Chefs special...definitely recommend it.

only time i ate there in-house i was treated to the sushi chef hacking into his hands and spitting loogies, um, somewhere AND roaches crawling up the wall next to me.
kinda ruined the overall experience and i still get a lump in my throat when i think of going back.

For the life of me cannot understand the hype about this place. Have eaten there twice and twice been disappointed. Won't be bothering with a third try. The sushi quality, preparation, and aesthetics are entirely pedestrian. Overcooked rice and butchered fish. Better luck finding better food at any spur-of-the moment, no-name Tokyo train station sushi joint or 41st St. carry-out Japanese market.
