No. 7

"Despite No. 7’s gritty locale, directly above a subway entrance, the interior has a solarium feel: Overstuffed cushions line the banquettes, the walls are white stucco, and the lofty ceilings are punctuated by a pair of skylights," says Time Out New York. Andrea Thompson for the New Yorker adds, "The chef, Tyler Kord, who most recently cooked at Perry St., has referred to his kitchen style as 'casual badass.' That, presumably, means complicated dishes executed with an effortless air. It works."
Chowhound quizkiddonniesmith says, "The menu's similar to the Good Fork, though a little bit more refined. The hangar steak with kimchi perogies was fantastic, as was a surpringly spicy tuna appetizer with jalepeno oil." And Pete Wells for the New York Times recommends the fried broccoli appetizer: "The broccoli is fried tempura-style, then set to rest on an inky hummus of black beans. This earthy pairing gets a refreshing lift from the glossy grapefruit shards in a small frisée salad."
Chowhound MB fka MB raves about No. 7's brunch: "All of the food was amazing and (thank god!) they serve a damn fine, strong cup of coffee... Latkes were off the hook delish, fat and flavorful and browned so nicely on the outside. The fried chicken knocked my socks off, too. I'm going to dream about it. Regularly." The fried brocolli is terrific and for a change the martinis are not bucket size.

Food is very good -- I only wish the menu was a little larger -- or the specials lasted longer (86 early).
The staff here is the absolute NICEST of all the new restaurants -- no attitude, just friendly and gracious!

the brunch is amazing- only a few choices but the fried chicken, waffles, grits with sausage and shrimp (?!) and the egg sandwiches blew us away.

had a great dinner here - fried broccoli was fantastic, as was the roasted chicken entree with brussel sprouts. i really liked the ambiance, a great addition to the neighborhood. it would be great if the menu had a few more options so that i could go there more frequently. the bar area tends to get extremely crowded throughout the week. i need to try brunch next!

Just love the broccoli, and I dream about the kimchee perogies. Both times I've been there, the service has been a bit spotty, though very nice, but otherwise, great.

Hands-down the best food in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill and one of my favorite restaurants in all of Brooklyn (if not the whole city). The food is delicious and it's actually a really good value (most entrees are less than $20). If there are specials the night you go, order them, they are always amazing. Hangar steak and roast chicken are always good bets.
I've been here for dinner with family in from out of town and just for drinks on a daten place. It's also a good spot to sit at the bar and order a late-night bite, which we don't have a lot of in Fort Greene. As stated earlier, staff is super-friendly and seem to know their stuff really well..

Notable and recommended for having a distinctive and well executed menu at reasonable prices. I've enjoyed it for dinner, and if I was on a late night/eat at the bar schedule I'd definately go here. A really positive addition to the FG restaurant scene.

Remarkable for its dinner menu, but even MORE so, for the fact that its brunch menu doesnt suck (is it just me, or do most restaurants hire the same brunch factory to make and deliver all their generic food afterthoughts to the hungover crowd?).
The service, too, is an example of that quintessential New York dining experience: laid back, fun, almost familiar servers graced with 5-star-restaurant instincts and insight.
My only gripe were some areas of the space that needed attention: First, a disgusting-looking stain on the ceiling in one area where they must have some serious roofing/waterproofing issues. It's right over the coffee station and near the kitchen area, and I dunno, I just don't like looking at those yellow, bubbling blisters when I'm trying to swallow my food. Oh yeah, and the plastic saran-wrap below the skylights (I guess to prevent cold). That's kinda funny and endearing, but still -- plastic wrap on your most prominent feature (during the day at least)?

The broccoli is a great idea, but on the night I ate here it was not very well executed. At first, in the dim mood lighting, I thought there was some kind of gooey center to the dish, surrounding the broccoli stalks, which seemed strange. Then I realized it was underdone tempura batter. It still nauseates me to think of, and it definitely tainted what was otherwise quite an acceptable dinner.

Dinner is absolutely delicious, with excellent service to boot. The best restaurant in Fort Greene?
On the down side, the brunch menu is EXTREMELY limited (no eggs?!) and the vaunted late-night chicken fried steak is overrated.

zinka, there are three types of eggs on the brunch menu now. Maybe you haven't eaten there in a while? Poached, scrambled and some other complicated dish I can't remember right now.

I've been to No. 7 tons of times. Food is good (although there are a few hit and misses) but generally a lovely place. Their cocktail list leaves a lot to be desired (most are misses) but the standards are great.
That being said, if you go on a Friday or Saturday night, AVOID THE BAR. The Bartender is the worst server, let alone bartender, i've ever experienced in my life. He's incredibly rude, and pretty much impossible to order a drink from. I've seen other patrons complain and while the manager seems to listen, nothing ever changes.
Frankly, if I want to be treated badly by a bartender I'll save 5 bucks and go to Alibi. Funny thing there, is even Alibi's "nastiest" bartender, is exceptionally nice to me. I save a bunch of money, get the same drink, and not be treated like shit. No.7 is good only if you go during the week or eat dinner in the restaurant on the weekends, not the bar.

This place is such a nice find (if you can find the door!). Low key and all about the food. The ceviche special was amazing. But please don't miss the fried soft boil egg - it is too hard to describe - but fantastic! Service was nice, and a good beer selection - we'll be back!

I wish I could jump on the hype wagon for this place but I just can't. I gave it three tries and was disappointed each time. First of all, the service is terrible. From the bartenders to the servers- they collectively need to get over themselves. The cocktail list was completely non-existent when I was there and don't even bother asking for a suggestion from the bartender because he really can't be bothered with you. The food was decent each time but unworthy of the accolades and contrary to public opinion the fried broccoli just didn't do it for me. It was bland, heavy, and underdone. The tofu was a nice entree, if underwhelming. Plus side: decent wine list, but again don't ask for a recommendation. I just wish this place was better.
