Joloff

"This loungelike, amiable Senegalese restaurant offers a gentle introduction to pungent flavors of West Africa. Mafe yap (MAH-fay YAHP) is lamb stewed in a 'peanut butter sauce.' The sauce, less cloying than it sounds, is also applied to chicken and vegetables," writes Dave Cook for the New York Times. And Time Out New York says, "Joloff’s owner, Papa Diagne, who was born and raised in Dakar, hews to tradition when he cooks cheb, simmering root vegetables, and then meaty bluefish stuffed with a paste of garlic, chiles, and parsley, in a tomato-based broth."
The Joloff menu includes a bunch of vegetarian options, too. SuperVegan's StephVegan says, "Love love love Jollof - so warming, so delicious, so vegan friendly!" And Chowhound kmcg calls Joloff "one of an ever dwindling number of cheap places to eat with excellent, authentic food." How would you rate this place?

Yay! Joloff featured. I love this restaurant--the folks that run it are the nicest people, the decor is really cool and the food is tasty and reasonably priced. It is the only senegalese restaurant I have ever been to so I don't have any point of comparison but if you want a nice meal in a groovy atmosphere served by friendly people this is a great spot.

This place is always a great experience, eating in or taking out. The owner and the staff could not be more hospitable. I recommend the curried okra.
I hope they bring back the sidewalk tables now that we actually have sidewalks on Fulton.
