"Postcards and souvenirs of all kinds decorate the back bar beneath a tin model of a New Yorkish skyline--and the swiveling bar stools have high backs. It's dark in a cozy way, and there's always free popcorn available from the movie-theater popper next to the bar," writes Charles D. Gray for Citysearch.

Chowhound deepyarn recommends the Brooklyn branch of the Waterfront Ale House (there's another location in Manhattan) for their "Better than average bar food (sometines very good), excellent beer and spirit selections, short and modest -- but well-chosen -- wine list." Fellow 'Hound BrookBoy suggests sampling "the great homemade hot sauce you can try right there and you can buy and take home, if you wish."

Blogger WhiteTrashBBQ is a fan of their $9.95 lunch special: "Let me tell you, this is an incredible deal. The soup of the day, a mug of beer, soda or coffee and a choice of 8 entrees, 3 of which are barbecue. I had ... the pulled pig, piled high on a white bread bun. It was moist and tender, beautifully cooked. The pork had a nice dark bark with light deep meat." What's your take on this place?

I love this place... some of the best bar food around. The beer selection is good, too. Actually, in the winter, they make "Grandma's Apple Pie Vodka" which is reason enough to go- that's one of the only drinks I crave.

good bar, good bar food. if you require polite service, avoid the blond waitress.

Never had a bad experience here and I've been going since it was in the Last Exit space across the street. It's one of the things I miss since the move to Kensington. Beer selection is great, and the bar staff knowledgeable about their product. Really good bar food. The owner is a super guy and I've always liked the staff, even the feisty ones.

i've only been once but i had a great meal at a good price and i'd recommend it to anyone. really excellent burgers and sandwiches.

good bar food yes.

every time i go here though.. i'll get a french dip sandwich or a burger, my wife will get some sort of salad, and maybe we split chili or something to start. 2 beers each.

80 bucks.

i always just feel ripped off - but other than that its good. at least the popcorn is free.

(and i've seen this written before.. you definitely need a value rating in between "about right" and "very overpriced" - or rethink the naming convention).

Based on the above reviews, I must have ordered the wrong thing during my one visit there as I was completely underwhelmed. I will try it again someday.

We live right across the street and Waterfront is always reliable on those nights we don't feel like cooking, and just want to grab a bite somewhere no-frills. Great burgers and I love the wurst selections. I appreciate the variety in their daily specials for when i get bored with the regular menu items.

Never had a bad experience here. The burger is great, but the real star is the popcorn. I don't know what they add to it, but it is spicy and crack-tastic. Service is polite and reliable.

I'm pretty hard on NYC cue joints, but even if Pete's isn't the best in the city, it's beer selection, vibe and consistency keep it tops in my book. That it's just down the street doesn't hurt either. And I agree with WhiteTrash BBQ... the lunch special is a steal.

One of the neighborhood standards for us. We go almost once a week. Great food, kid friendly, great beer. Can not go wrong. The texas dip brisket sandbo is the shiznickle!

I have always enjoyed the beer here, but it's unfortunate that there is so little bar space. Frankly, I feel that they should move away from having a restaurant space; it is just too tight in there. They do have the best French Onion Soup, but much of their menu is a bit of a rip off. Wait staff can be iffy, except for Mary behind the bar -- she is fantastic. And, as others have said, the popcorn is like crack. Overall, a great bar, but be prepared to wait for some of the "regulars" to give up their space at the bar and be ready to put down a lot of $$.

recently sampled the goose island bourbon county stout. lovely.

We've been Pete's regulars for 14 years -- this was the first restaurant our kid went to (at two weeks old) and he's practically grown up there, always being treated with great kindness.

The food is surprising for pub grub -- lots of interesting specials and very good quality. My only plea would be for them to bring back the waffle-cut fries from the late 90s -- those had it all over the current version.

My husband and I popped in here in December when we saw the sign for egg nog in the window and the nog did not disappoint - we went back for more a few days later! Once he reads that they have Goose Island Beer here, I suspect it will become our regular hangout.

Always a solid choice when I'm in the area. I appreciate the good beer selection and way above average bar nibbles. Food is probably a 3.5 from me. Too bad there isn't a "Bar" tab to vote on - I'd vote 4 stars in that category. Instead I'll give ambiance 4 stars.

Love this place. I think the burgers are the best in the neighborhood, and the sweet potato fries are yummy too. Recently also tried the pulled pork sandwich (mentioned above), and it was also delish.

this is my spot. surprisingly good specials (soups especially) and anything involving meat is can't miss. also anything that's advertised with a paper sign taped to the bar mirror is worth drinking. gets a little too crowded lately but worth the wait. the bar stools don't swivel...

why does this page keep repositioning my browser window?

"why does this page keep repositioning my browser window?"

I've been meaning to ask that every time I post.

The Waterfront Ale House, which all of my friends just call Pete's, is one of the first restaurants I discovered when I moved to Brooklyn 16 years ago. (They were across the street then.)

The pluses are delicious and adventurous food. I am often surprised by a unique and different offering on the menu. Sometimes there is game, fresh-made pasta, or some other tasty treat. And their Oktoberfest menu is amazing.

If I have one criticism, it's that it is difficult and sometimes impossible to find a light lager if that's what you are in the mood for. People with unsophisticated beer tastes are often left staring at the board in bewilderment and then order a mixed drink.

I am constantly amazed by how kid-friendly this place is.

The two booths in the back are the only marginal seating location but if you want to focus on food and conversation they are fine. The booth right by the door can be drafty (duh).

And while there are only a few desserts, the bread pudding is about the best in Brooklyn.

We love this place, although I like the Chip Shop menu better.

I love Pete's. I used to get hit with the $80 bills, like the above poster, when I would go there with my wife and order the game meats like elk, kangaroo, and wild boar bbq. Then I found out about the best lunch special in town. For $9.95 you get a cup of the soup of the day, a mug of beer and one of six menu items such as the Texas dip. It's more than I can eat. I try to go weekly with my friend Joe and Baby Q for lunch.

Other favorite items: salad with wassabi ginger dressing, cup of bbq sauce, and whisky of the week.

I used to be here 3 or 4 nights a week when I lived in the nabe.

One thing that none of the commenters have mentioned is "Sam's Famous Hot Sauce." If I could install a tap next to the hot and cold water, it would be for SFHS.

One commenter already mentioned it, but a big shout out for Mary -- she is dynamite. And Dmitri is also fantastic. But there is a misanthropic homunculous, I think his name is Peter, thinning hair, scraggly beard -- avoid like the clap.

Excellent beer selection, and for bar food, this is about as great as it gets. Yes, it is easy to run big tabs here, but worth the trouble.
