Cafe Steinhof

"With its wraparound windows and neon sign, Cafe Steinhof in Park Slope is just about New York's homiest Austrian outpost," writes Dana Bowen for the New York Times.
"The Austrian menu features classics, like weiner schnitzel (pounded breaded veal) and saurbraten (marinated beef), as well as more inventive dishes. Start with flaky smoked trout, a Steinhof favorite, or the bold cheese-and-meat plate, including pâté, sour cherries and gherkins," says Citysearch's Lisa Marie Rovito. Melena Ryzik for New York magazine recommends Cafe Steinhof's "Teutonic staples like brats, kraut and deliciously cheesy spaetzle." And the Village Voice recommends "the chicken paprika, drenched in a rust-colored cream sauce so tasty that you could drink a glass of it."
If you're on a budget, Tasting Table recommends Steinhof's goulash, which normally costs $12 but is served for a mere 6 bucks on Monday nights: "Tender cubes of beef melt into a rust-colored sauce flavored with a heavy dose of paprika, and big hunks of potato quell its tiny undercurrent of heat." How would you rate this place?

Love Steinhof. Family's german and it's their favorite spot when they're visiting. Schnitzel is good, and authentic. Portions equally authentically teutonic. Minor complaint is that their taps don't change too often. But that's perhaps more of an issue for me than most 'cause I'm there a lot!

Great place to go on a weekend, sit at the bar, grab a few frosty German beers and eat one of the fried cod, cod salad or sardine salad sandwiches. Can't comment on the rest, since I don't do the red meat or pork thing. Very friendly staff, albeit over worked during the brunch crush.
OK with groups, though I'm normally just there with the Mrs.

Food is delicious. Schnitzel, agree, tasty. Tomato soup, soothing. sausages, all good. the one plate I think that has gone down in quality over the years is the spicy tomato salad. It used to be really fresh and balanced in the heat department. I had it a few times this past year (and even when tomatoes were in season) and it was a bit soggy and watery.
also, happy hour prices are just right.

Love love love this place. One of my favorite in all of Brooklyn. Everything I've tried on the menu has been consistently good--satisfying, well-prepared, non-fussy food. And very good value for the money.

We like going here occasionally, nice atmosphere and all. But stick to the Eastern European stuff, especially the well-priced sausage platters.
Last time I was here I made the mistake of ordering a seafood chowder. Possibly the worst alleged soup I ever had. Some chopped up raw veggies with some random pieces of seafood, all in an insipid cream of some kind. Not cooked the way a soup should be to meld the flavors, but done in about two minutes.

I'd always heard good things about this place and wanted to try it. However, about six months ago my BF and I found ourself in the area at around 10:00 on a weekday eve. (me remembering that Zagat mentioned that the restaurant was open until 11), so we went in. The hostess really gave us the fish eye and was very reluctant to seat us. The the waiter came over to ask if we wanted a drink. My BF ordered a Guiness, not having looked closely enough at the menu to notice that it was in a can , not on draught. When the can was brought out, as the waiter was opening it, my BF said, "I'm sorry, I didn't realize it wasn't on tap. I don't want it."
The waiter poured it in the glass, set it in front of my BF, said, "You should have read the menu," and walked away. Needless to say, we then walked out.
My BF attributed this to racial discrimination (he is black; I'm white); I really couldn't think of any other reason for this treatment, much as I would not like to think that is true. We were both well-dressed, coming from work, and not loud or drunk or anything, just hungry.

yum on the various wursts (weisswurt is my favorite), goulash, and various slaws and pickles. the schnitzel is not so good though. but the wine braised beef is excellent. skip the seafood in general. nice austrian beer selection too, skip the wine, which is a shame because austrian wine can be delicious even at low prices. they've chosen insipid ones, though. and the place feels exactly as it should - a bustling, noisy jovial place.
maybe the best thing, other than lunch a the counter on a wintery day, is the sunday night movie thing.

Reading the posts, we clearly missed something when we were here! Bad service and the food was rank...maybe we didn't drink enough to make it okay!

Promenade -
In looking over your previous posts, you have yet to give ANY restaurant a good review, so I'm taking your post (and not the other 12 RAVES) with a grain of salt.

The food here is awful and not at all authentic. Everything we ordered was overcooked, except the green beans which were almost raw. The service could have been more attentive (for example, I had to get up and get salt and pepper on my own, even though it wasn't that busy the night we were there). Would not recommend it at all. Ambience is total kitsch and not what you find in Germany/Austria/Switzerland (it seems this restaurant wants to be both German and Austrian). Thumbs emphatically down.

decent solid food and a cozy atmosphere with friendly service. once our bartender was slow, then forgot to place our order (mulled wine). he made up for it by giving us the drink for free. Babs, sometimes its just crappy bartenders, i wouldnt resort to the race card everytime. i get crap service often at different bars but wont blame it on being the often discriminated against ukranian-bulgarian :)

I like this place too and actually frequent it. It's a nice place to drop in and have a drink at the bar and a bite to eat, friendly bartenders and customers. Reasonably priced.

i love this place. my family is from central europe (hungary and czechoslovakia) and my mom has been here and she thinks it's authentic. the only regret i have is no chocolate dessert on the dessert menu! but the spaetzle is wunderbar, and the sauerbraten is ausgezeichnet. my 4 year old son loves the place and they tolerate him with sweetness and provide me with slivovitz and delicious kölsch on tap as medicine. again, viel viel dank cafe steinhoff! i love that i can order kaffee mit schlag and no one bats an eyelash and it appears!

For years I was skeptical of this place, but never tried it until recently. I was pleasantly surprised by everything. Whole fish, sausage, salads - everything was delicious and well-prepared. Kinda funny atmosphere, but comfy enough. Incredible desserts as well! Check out my blog for photos!

I've been eating here since it opened years ago, and while I miss Max and Moritz, the owner's other, more formal restaurant that was where Anthony's is now, Steinhof's is always a reliable, good and well-priced meal.
I'm pretty boring when it comes to ordering, so I can only speak to the tomato soup, ham and brie plate, meatloaf sandwich, chicken paprika, goulash, and wiener schnitzel, all of which are great. In the dozens of times I've eaten there, I only had one bad experience, and this was late on a saturday, and they seemed to have some issue with the kitchen that night, as in someone didn't show up for a shift. There is one waiter who can be a prick sometimes, the guy with longish black hair and smarmy demeanor. He really pissed me off once by saying "Look, I'm really busy, so don't call me over if you don't know what you want." I guess that was the second bad experience I've had there.
For those of you who ride the 5 Boro Bike Tour, do yourself a favor and exit off the expressway right by Costco, and ride up to Cafe Steinhof for lunch. Helluva lot better than dealing with Staten Island.
And Babs, racial discrimination, in that area of the Slope? You've got to be joking. Maybe your bf shouldn't be such a beer snob and drink the beer he ordered and was opened for him before he cries wolf.

This place is awful. It's not a restaurant, it's a bar with some food. they shouldn't have closed Max & Moritz.

The food was not particularly good -- dramatically inferior to Thomas Beisl. The Gosser didn't taste right either, which is weird. Very cramped layout and hit-or-miss service. Most of the food we got was bland and uncreative (even by the standards of Austrian food), with the very notable exception of the Linzer tort, which was delicious.

I like the Steinhof. Ive had lunch there a number of times. The soups, especially the white bean and smoked ham are delicious. The soup along with the liptauer with smoked salmon and a salad makes for a hearty comforting lunch. One sour note: we wanted to get something to eat on Super Bowl Sunday, Steinhof was virtually empty with the exception of one couple seated at a table in the back. When we asked to be seated the server directed us to the small table next to this couple, who had to re-arrange plates, coats etc. to accommodate us. Even though most other tables were empty, the server told us management told her not to seat two at these tables. Rather than being cramped alongside the couple in the back, we decided to leave. So the tables remained empty waiting for the requisite number of people who probably never appeared. An insane policy!
