"There are several Amins. They seem to have an empire of mediocre Indian places," writes Chowhound Get In My Belly. There are Amins on DeKalb (pictured above), 7th Avenue, and Montague, but — like most Indian joints here in Brooklyn — none of them get rave reviews.

Andrew Sessa for New York magazine says, "Though cumin, garam-masala, and turmeric flavorings are all present, the preparations generally fall short of the intense variety of tastes you’d like to expect. Still, the food is fresh, plentiful, and reasonably priced. In fact, the wines and beers are absolute steals." Metromix adds, "A word to the wise: Amin isn't kidding when it labels its dishes spicy. This is not your average Americanized Indian food, dulled down for the Yankee palate, so 'spicy' means it's going to hurt."

Yelper Jannelle C. puts Amin in a nutshell: "I have definitely had better Indian food but if you're looking to just satisfy a craving for curry, this place is a decent bet for the neighborhood and your wallet won't cry." Any thoughts on Amin? And while you're sharing, let us know if you recommend any other Indian spots in the borough.

If one is looking to review Indian restaurants in the FG/CH area one would be much better off focusing on Kinara on Myrtle. Amin is as average (in the not good way) Indian food one can get. Kinara, on the other hand, is awesome.

Last time I went to Amin's on 7th avenue was over a year ago and the raita was rancid - not a good look boys!
sorry - I pass
I would LOVE to know a great Indian place in the slope - does anyone have a good suggestion

i've made better indian food while with a headache and hungover, as a white guy, than these guys do.

SnarkSlope wrote a review on February 10, 2009 12:28 PM

Another mediocre Indian place in the Slope.

You're better off at Baluchi's on 5th Ave.

amt230 wrote a review on February 10, 2009 12:28 PM

since moving to ft. greene I've been really disappointed that there is no good indian food. saying this place is mediocre is being generous.

i've always been afraid of kinara on myrtle, since quite literally in the 2 years I've lived here and have walked by it daily I've only seen 2 people eating dinner there. literally.

eh wrote a review on February 10, 2009 12:29 PM

wasder is right Kinara on Myrtle is better.

tinarina wrote a review on February 10, 2009 12:37 PM

I second Kinara. Amin tastes of prepackaged sauces with mediocre meat or fish tossed in at the last minute. If this is you only choice for Indian, skip it.

wasder wrote a review on February 10, 2009 12:54 PM

amt230--I would seriously reconsider your aversion to Kinara. Order in one night from there and you will see.

eh wrote a review on February 10, 2009 1:01 PM

again wasder is right. we order from kinara all the time although i've never set foot in the restaurant.

Amin used to be my go-to takeout place when I was desperate for Indian flavors. The RUDEST DELIVERY GUY in New York ended that -- he all but threw my evidently lower-than-anticipated tip in my face. It wasn't worth it for technicolor mush.

I've given up on Indian food in Brooklyn. If any Indian restaurant entrepreneurs are reading this, in a few months you ought to be able to get bargain rents on Smith Street. Just saying.

I created an account here specifically to add to the list of people praising Kinara. I have eaten there many (15+) times and ordered-in even more. Every time is excellent. At first I was skeptical since there was never anyone eating there, but someone has to be the first to walk in right? Walk in. You won't be disappointed.

Oh and Amin was my first Indian food experience - dry chicken - mediocre is the best review they can hope for.

Amin is as everyone said mediocre at best and usually below that. We regularly order from Star of India on 5th ave. They are very nice deliver fast and have tasty food.

i live pretty much on top of Joy so I just go there.

jawbreaker wrote a review on February 10, 2009 1:57 PM

I ate there once. The food was edible at best and the place was dirty. Always seems deserted. I would not eat food from there again.

MrsCWB wrote a review on February 10, 2009 2:04 PM

Well... we pretty much live on top of this one, so it's always a little embarrassing when we order in from other Indian places ("so you mean you live... on top of... that other Indian?"), but that sums up my impression of it. I never gave them a second chance (which is why I'd feel bad rating them as the "total ripoff" I almost went with), since the first time we tried them, a surly and very slow waiter added to the sinister ambiance and tragically mediocre food (bad sauces failing to hide VERY low quality food).
Not a fan :)

Anyone in PS or CG/CH should patronize Balucchi's [5th Ave & Smith St] - yes, it's a chain, but they deserve their success. It's a huge relief to have them in the neighborhood after depending on dependably-mediocre Amin all those years...
Also, props to Kinara - there's one in the South Slope too. Still, I'd go for Balucchi's any day [or make the trek to the Jackson Diner!].

Used to order from the Montague Street branch when I lived in the Heights, until we got burned food one night. I mean, scraped-from-the-bottom-of-the-scorched-pan burned, with bits of carbon floating in the sauce. Never been tempted to return to any of the Amins since then.

I'm OK with Bombay Grill on 7th Avenue between 10th and 11th Streets - weirdly sweet raita but most of the sauces have the extra sweet or spicy bite that's missing from much local Indian.

Pragonetti wrote a review on February 10, 2009 2:47 PM

Someone once commented on here that these places must MOB connected if not fronts, because how can they survive serving such poor food and having no one in there ever.

jdoo wrote a review on February 10, 2009 3:25 PM

Another +1 for kinara. We ordered from there all the time when I lived in FG. I have never gone to eat at Kinara but their takeout is top notch. Probably my 2nd favorite indian food in nyc besides dakshin on the UES.

Raga is good for you cobble/boerum hillers. IMO, best bet in the slope is baluchi's. I like how tangy their vindaloo is.

KHuebbe wrote a review on February 10, 2009 4:36 PM

C'mon people, it's not that bad. Ya'll are some crazy harsh critics anyway.

sbbrock wrote a review on February 10, 2009 7:52 PM

I agree with KHuebbe. I think it is ok, not the best I have ever had but certainly not the worst. I have always had pleasant, no problem service from them. I have never eaten in the restaurant, just ordered take-out.

The 7th Ave Amin kind of sucks.

Heather wrote a review on February 10, 2009 10:31 PM

I like Joy better, but Amin is still on Delivery.com and we're lazy so we order from them a lot. They're not that bad, just the kurma kinda sucks. Good chicken tikka.

superstooper wrote a review on February 10, 2009 10:54 PM

Disgusting. No love. Too expensive.

"The food is bad and the portions are small."

northflatbushgirl wrote a review on February 17, 2009 12:27 AM

although AMIN is good, far bettr and also in the neighborhood is JOY INDIAN RESTAURANT at 301 Flatbush Avenue near Park Place. The folks are so hospital, the place spotlesss and the food is consistenly great. The prices are good too! The mango lasse is fresh. I highly recommend JOY INDIAN. open 7 days a week. I have been eating at this restaurant for bout 5 years and have never had "deli belly". good enough for me.

bklynbred wrote a review on February 17, 2009 3:05 PM

I've eaten here 1/2 a dozen times and it was always average, if that. I'd recommend India House on Court St. for a better experience. There's a nice vibe but the food just doesn't back it up.

Snarkypants wrote a review on November 5, 2009 11:52 AM

Every time I walk by Amin I wonder, sometimes aloud, how this place manages to stay open. It's terrible. It's more average than your most average 6th St. Indian spot and the one time I ate there my food was accompanied by a hairball. Yes, Aloo Gobi with a side of hair.

Yes, if one is to eat Indian in our area the spot would be Kinara. But let's be honest, shall we, and just admit that we don't have anything here that beats a trip to Jackson Heights.
