Union Smith Cafe

"Low key and mellow, this 'American bistro' offers an extensive menu (with almost too much to choose from), starting with brunch seven days a week," says Metromix. And Chowhound vatl619 writes, "I like the concept of Union Smith Cafe and love the eggs with asparagus and truffle oil vinaigrette, and because of this keep giving it yet another chance despite sometimes very shoddy service."
Though Union Smith Cafe's menu fit into the Twenty Bucks a Day budget, this blogger wasn't too impressed: "Neither of our pastas exceeded the Olive Garden’s quality level. My orecchiette with pancetta and peas ($9.50) were swimming in a layering of cream sauce and what seemed like it ought to be pesto, based on the color. Sadly, there was not enough flavor to determine its actual content." Best Street Brooklyn wasn't thrilled by this place, either: "The macaroni and cheese was not macaroni and cheese. It was rigatoni... It is just a bit too large of pasta to get the correct cheese to pasta ratio."
And Citysearch user ktobiassen called Union Smith's lobster roll "a steal at $16," but noted that it was "heavy on the mayo and light on the lobster, which is expected at this price -- but it would have been nice if the bread was smaller to provide a better balance." Still, this place often seems busy -- especially during the warmer months when their outdoor seating area is open. What do you think about it?

The food is just okay, but not bad or terrible. The service, though, ranges from slow to dumb.

all the food here is average at best. Really this place is only good for drinking beer on their outdoor patio in the warmer months which can be quite nice when they are packed and have a little band playing. however the lighting on the inside is bad, by this i mean it's too bright. I avoid during the winter for this reason alone.

The brunch is not bad, but not great. However, they do make a good french toast and pretty good burgers. I agree their outdoor seating is a big plus in the summer.

I've had good and bad experiences here. I like the turkey with stuffing and gravy. But I once had rigatoni where someone got out of hand with the red pepper or something and it was horrible. It is a comfortable place. You just have to know what to order, which is difficult unless someone tells you.

The food has actually improved significantly since they changed chefs sometime last year (October, I think). I am thinking about becoming a regular.

I would like to vote, because I have eaten many times at Union Smith, Brooklyn Chicks in tow, but I have no memory of the food. Hmmmm. The children liked what they had, and I remember that their chicken sticks were freshly fried and tasty and came in a reasonable time frame, but that's all that comes to mind.

We had pancakes and bacon and coffee and it cost 2 of us around $60.oo
Its insanely overpriced for breakfast which explains why its empty in the mornings.
Good food but who wants to spend that much on breakfast?
