Tavern on Dean

"The menu reflects the culturally diverse clientele serving solid new American fare, English pub grub, and a few soul food dishes. The country-fried chicken is crispy, the sirloin steak club with black pepper mayo and bacon is tangy, and the warm apple crisp is served a la mode," Brownstoner's own Lisa Selin Davis writes for New York magazine.
Metromix says that "the kitchen is open until 3 a.m. (1 a.m. on Sundays) and has a year round enclosed garden, ideal to enjoy weekend brunch served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m." Tavern on Dean's hearty prix fixe brunch, deliciously captured by Brockenbrough Photos, costs $14 and includes and entree, a basket of muffins, fresh fruit, and either a bloody Mary, screwdriver, mimosa, glass of champagne or half-pint of beer.
And Chowhound Papa.fagiole says, "I go to Tavern on Dean probably once of week for the burger. Big, succulent, bloody and delicious." What's your take on this place?

Excellent. The food is good, not great, but the vibe is perfect - there's a diverse crowd and a refreshing lack of posers (asshats to this crowd).

I like this place a lot. Everytime I come here, I wish it was in my neighborhood, I'd be a regular. This is what a good neighborhood pub should be like, nice music playing, friendly barkeepers and waitstaff, and a diverse, good bunch of regulars, who all belong, and provide, as ENY said, a good vibe.
I've mostly had brunch here, and it's always been extremely good, and filling. I first came here because my B65 bus rolls right by, and it's convenient, but having enjoyed myself every time I'm here, I'd get here anyway. If they could only open a branch in Crown Heights.......

Last time I stopped by this place was 2003, I think, so too long ago to review. I remember it was OK, but not great. Has it changed much in that time?

This place could be so great. It's got the kind of food you don't actually see in NY much - comfy, homey good food. This place isn't fancy. But it's also not consistent and that just kills it for me. Also, service can be spotty. Bit overpriced, too in my opinion, although I know restaurant overhead is through the roof these days, so that may be unfair.

This place is so-so. Some dishes are great, others awful. Service is decent, but the bar is much too small. Pete's Waterfront Ale House, Downtown Atlantic, and Mullanes do the full-service pub thing much better.

Be careful what you accidentally left behind! I left my gold pen after signing the tab and came back for it 10 minutes later to be told that it was not there??? The Owner is more interested drinking than looking into my stolen property. Never been back there since!!! The food is mediocre BUT the honesty of the staff - totally questionable - be very, very careful........

I went once and really liked the place. Great turkey burger, nice server. But beware, they charge everyone a service fee! If you accidentally tip on top of that (like I did), they won't correct the misunderstanding. Which is a shame, because now I won't be coming back. Given that it strives to be a neighborhood place, that isn't very neighborly.

My husband and I go to Tavern on Dean two or three times a month and we always enjoy it. It is not gourmet food and it does not pretend to be. We have a few favorites and we are never disapointed, their specials are usually quite good and their burgers and sandwiches are awesome! Brunch is pretty good as well.

great burger, friendly waitstaff. don't sit at the bar if you are white. at firs, the regulars are real friendly, but after a few times you will eventually be made not welcome in no uncertain terms. the bar is not the turf of johnny come lately whiteys. And Al Sharpton wont come to your rescue either. he only helps oppressed people of color, not oppressed frozen out white boys with some hot wings addictions....

We sit at the bar all the time and have never, never encountered this. I do not want this to turn into an email back and forth but those are some pretty strong accusations and comments you are making. The owner is white, at least half the staff is white and everyone that works there is supper freindly and most them live in the neighborhood.
(the first time I posted two of my ratings did not come through so I have added them to this post)

Tavern on Dean has good pub food and reasonably priced drinks. I particularly like the oyster po-boy. The place has a lively after-work and late evening scene, and the crowd and bartenders are friendly.

I think Tavern on Dean is perfectly ok, but not great. Something about it just always rubs me a little bit the wrong way, and its probably to do with the check. It just seems a bit too pricey for bar food. The burgers are tasty, but the so called overpriced burgers at 67 Burger are still a few bucks cheaper, and the beer is not the cheapest either. Somehow, two burgers and two beers ends up always costing more than $40, so I'm never in a rush to go back, even though I live just down the block.

Based upon the reviews, I decided to check this place out. I was very disappointed. First, the service was terrible. It was not terribly crowded in the seating area by the bar, yet my spouse and I waited nearly 5 minutes to be seated. Although the wait staff saw us obviously waiting to be seated, we were not approached. When we were finally seated, it took a long time to place our order of 2 beers, the veggie baguette and the steak sandwich. Beers took much too long to come out. The food, however, did look appetizing when it arrived. My husband enjoyed his steak sandwich. My veggie baguette started out promising, but it tasted increasingly greasy as I continued to eat. I suspect that the overly-greasy and flavorless fries were leaching into my sandwich. We were never asked about our meal, and the staff failed to be even moderately courteous. We will not be back.

I visited this place after several friends said its a good place for brunch. i tried it on a late sunday afternoon wwas dissapointed in every aspect of this place. ?First of all, the poor service by our wait staff. The waiter came over and said "howya doin". yes, very Joey from Friends style but without the personality. then it took forever for our omelettes and drinks to arrive. When I mentioned that I ordered a bloody Mary and not a Martini, he took my drink away and never came back until I flagged him down. I reminded him of my bloody Mary again. He came 10 minutes later with a Virgin Mary and told me "here is your Virgin Mary that you ordered". I said I did not order this drink and forget my regular drink too, as I was almost finished with my meal. The waiter never asked if we wanted anything else, refill n coffee, and gave us the check. there was my Bloody Mary..... on the check...... I asked for a manager or the owner and he told me that "Mick" is the owner and he was in and out. Someone from my party said, "in and out of the bathroom doing coke probably". Well, Mick, get your arse out of the toilet and get back to managing your restaurant, because the service stinks. And I am one person who will NEVER go back there. I like BEAST for a great brunch and wonderful service, I like MUTARD on 5th Avenue for brunch and I also like my neighborhood PARKSIDE DINER for a good omelette and home fries. At least everyone in the restaurant smiles......
