Italian, Pizza, Brunch Spot

"The rustic exposed brick, tabletop candles and weathered photos of Naples make it a good date spot, but either roomy dining area could handle a raucous birthday celebration," says Time Out New York. "The central focus at the warm, wooden eatery is the wood-burning oven, which churns out nearly two dozen thin, crispy pies like Pere e Zola (pear, walnut, gorgonzola and mozzarella) and Alpina (pancetta, scallions, gruyere and mozzarella)," says Metromix. And New York magazine adds that "there’s also an extensive assortment of well-dressed salads, carpaccio, salumi and cheese, pasta, and mostly southern Italian entrées."

Gastronormous recommends stopping by Savoia for brunch: "The eggs in purgatory were delicious: two medium-well poached eggs were nestled in thick and hearty (but maybe a tad too salty) marinara sauce. The eggs were served with a healthy portion of gnocchi, which I have never seen on a brunch menu before. I wish I would see it more often as it made a tasty and filling addition to the eggs—perfect for a late brunch." How would you rate this place?

Savoia is great. It's one of the best, if not the best, restaurant on Smith St (imho).

I think the photos are of Montesarchio, not Naples -- Savoia has gone downhill and quality not what it was when it opened when the pizza was the best around. I don't think that that's the case anymore.

Food's not bad, but calling it the best on Smith St. is quite a stretch.

i love this place, but for what it is.

good pizza. non pizza dishes are ok at best. service is sometimes great, sometimes too european (standoffish). but it is an absolutely great place to sit outside, drink good wine, and enjoy a not too expensive pizza meal.

Agree that it is good to have in the neighborhood, but not worth going out of the way for.

BH76 - that pretty much sums up every restaurant on Smith Street. I go to Savoia quite a bit and order in from them - it's jolly, kid friendly and reasonably priced. But I would never tell someone to cross neighborhoods for it.

gkw -- Saul is clearly not in that category!

I confess to a profound love for their classic bruschetta. I have no idea if it's really classic or particularly authentic in any way. But it's loaded with tomatoes and garlic and good olive oil and comes with salad greens and is absolutely delicious.

I like the restaurant but they have gotten too excessive with the pricing. Especially on the wine. They have one $28 bottle, another $32 and the rest is in the $40s or higher. It is not that great a place that they can charge that much for wine, and the wine itself is not worth what they charge.

They lifted prices on everything last summer by quite a bit. I love the Reale pizza, it use to be $15, than one day it was $17.50. That is a lot for a pizza.

The eggplant caponata appetizer is a great value though, for $8.50 it is practically a meal and tastes great. Also the meat and cheese plates are good, will cost $23 but the selection is excellent. They should have more garnish on it though, like figs or apples.

All in all, I would go a lot more if it was a bit cheaper.
