Superfine

"If ever New York has you feeling claustrophobic in tiny bars and restaurants, might I recommend this spacious, likely former warehouse in DUMBO... with huge and colorful abstract art, and long strands of blue bulbs and giant paper lanterns hanging from the barn-high ceilings," writes Foodeffect. And Time Out New York says "All three owners are long-term locals, and many residents were enthusiastic helpers during the lengthy construction process. The seating plan at Dumbo’s unofficial HQ is a little funky, as is the mix of china, glass and plastic water tumblers on the tables. But no one quibbles with the organic food or the friendly service."
"The daily-changing menu, scrawled on large dry-erase boards, offers a blend of haute cuisine and Texas roadhouse fare. Winners include succulent seared duck breast with rutabaga and sliced shiitake mushrooms, beefy steak au poivre with thin, salty fries and juicy pork chop with garlicky mashed potatoes and bitter greens," writes Dan McAlvanah for Citysearch.
Superfine serves brunch, accompanied by a live bluegrass band, on Sundays from 11am to 3pm and New York magazine says, "Green chiles imported from New Mexico give Sunday brunch a delectable southwestern spin." What's your take on this place?

I've always had a great time there, whether drinking at the bar or eating. The review above is true re: open room. Its HUGE. Fun place, unpretentious and the food I've had has been consistent. Never been for brunch...

It's pretty and convenient, especially for large groups, but the food has never been memorable. OTOH, it's not terrible either.

if youre going to call yourself 'superfine' you really better deliver, because expectations are heightened from the talk, only to likely let you down once you actually experience it, like williamsburg or redhook.

goldie I don't understand.
The first time I visited Williamsburg and Red Hook ( over 20 years ago...) I didnt arrive with expectations.

The food is just fine for what it is: Not expensive food you want to eat while drinking a few beers.

I can't believe nobody has pointed out that for lunch they serve one of the best burgers in the city! Absolutely top quality meat, perfectly prepared, with a homey sesame bun and the aforementioned shoestring fries. Go for cheddar and pancetta - you won't be disappointed.

I think the food is special. If it was any better, it would be a whole lot more expensive. I bring dates here when the relationship is starting to gain some momentum, which is an endorsement of some sort.

I have to agree with goldie. And as to Prodigal_Son I would like to say: Now that 20years have passed, we indeed should come to newly developed and highly expensive neighborhoods in Brooklyn with some expectations. The days of bringing a sloppy disheveled art project in for a final assignment to 5th grade art class are over. These are businesses, not a group project at Burning Man.
Went to 'Superfine' a month ago. The hostess was buried in the far recesses of the establishment and barely had the aura of someone responsible that worked there. I believe the first few moments in a restaurant are key. If you, as a customer, walk in and can't figure out what is going on ie: 'Who do I talk to to get table?', 'Is it seat ourselves?' and the hostess slowly makes her way to the front of the restaurant looking like she's lost herself, you know the general manager doesn't care either. When I arrived with my sister the place was desolate. It was a Thursday night. Note: it was not a holiday either.
The food was bland and so boring it had to be all Sysco bottled/packaged goods. For those unaware, restaurants in this 'great' city have two choices: make the dressings and sauces from scratch themselves or rely on pre-fabricated, pre-mixed, pre-packaged dressings and sauces from a factory food distributor like..Sysco! After frequenting restaurants in the city with the same type of menu and price range as Superfine but who pride themselves on making things fresh and from scratch I would put my money on Sysco as the main chef at Superfine. Another sad and pathetic thing is that no one ever came to our table to ask how the food was. It's actually simple for a restaurant, especially one nearly empty: leave entree's at table, wait 3minutes for customer to try, return to table, ask:'How is everything for you?' Specifics: the house salad was field greens with NO OTHER VEGETABLES with a bland dressing. My sister's squash soup was so flavorless I imagined that the box it came in said 'Fit for Human Consumption..' The drink I had, a gin and lime concoction, was so limey it was opaque, note to bartender and again 'general manager': lime juice is powerful, you only need very small amount in most drinks. And lime juice with sours is heavy handed. Suggestion: after you make a drink try it with a small straw so you know what the customer is about to go through. This also let's you know if you got the recipe right. If the tasting prompts the 'gag reflex' you should make the drink again.
I believe with the right management and care into the menu and drinks, this place could be packed. It's really so close to the city and a great location to go before or after seeing the gorgeous sites of Dumbo and walking over the Brooklyn Bridge. I did enjoy the art on the walls and the red/orange velvet pool table.
Well, I guess the folks down here in Dumbo just have to take it for what it is and hope their unattendence will speed the current restaurant to closing and a new 'project' will come sooner or later.

Really one of my favorite places in the City. The food is much better than most above say, with fine ingreidients, fast but careful prep and the like. Burger, ditto.
They don't change menu much, and kitchen closes to early, but really just a first rate bar. Tanya one of the great front of house people in the world! You should have seen her the night of the Election, hugging everyone. Don't miss Halloween.
Home away from home, top bar in dumbo, a very special place.

Wonderful place, great folks, and food that's very good without being pretentious. I've been there with pals drinking beer and (many times) with my wife and six-year-old, and been treated equally well and made to feel at home every time. I've never had an experience like the one above -- I've always found the staff to be great about checking up on you and putting right the (rare) things that have gone wrong.
Superfine's a treasure -- a great place that's part of the essential fabric of its neighborhood, and that bridges the many Brooklyn tribes with grace.

oldnycstyle-
Sorry your restaurant is going through some tough times. Good luck with that.
psst....the Sysco reference gave you away.
ps: coke or meth? That was a LONG post there.
oldnycstyle wrote a review on December 2, 2008 9:36 PM
No, don't have a restaurant. I know alot of restaurant owners and chefs. No coke or meth...just good old nyc knowledge of good quality and being continually let down in Brooklyn... but hey, I guess the phrase we're all so happy with is....it's all good..... Right? I forgot we're dealing with even older NY'ers that take it up the 'you know what' daily and ... that's all good.. ; )

Brunch is OK, but they like to flip their tables, so if you want to actually linger and hear the Bluegrass band, sit at the bar. The eye candy is dandy, and the Bloody Marys are very good.
