The Moxie Spot

"You enter through the front door which is Wonka-like with three sized openings: one of adults, one for children and one for tiny tiny chickens or teacup dogs... The rest of the decor is equally unusual: maps, globes, trunks, exotic prints, animal images and flat screens with BBC’s 'Blue Planet' and old Bugs Bunny cartoons playing," writes A Child Grows in Brooklyn. A Park Slope Parents user adds, "There are 'telephones' so that kids can talk to each other on different floors. There are board games and crayons and paper."
Citysearch's Rebecca Behan checked out their "eclectic menu of basics in modest portions. Macaroni and cheese ($5) and pizza ($4.75) line up next to top sellers such as the spicy Thai wings and house-made donuts, though the $18 grass-fed steak and fries plate seems destined for a more mature palate." But Chowhound BillyBob didn't enjoy the grub: "Hot dog was fine, nothing special, fries typical but the chicken noodle soup was inedible, bordering on disgusting." Of course, the food probably isn't meant to be the main draw at this kid-friendly hang-out. What's your take on this place?

Haven't been there but often walk by. It's worth mentioning that they have free movie screenings for kids on Friday evenings (I think at 6 p.m.) and Saturday mornings (I think at 9 a.m.).

Moxie Spot: the restaurant everyone would love to love but just can't. It is spacious and well-suited for children, the food that we had was great (excellent mac-n-cheese and really good, if tiny, burger), there's wine for grownups, but the pricing was weird and -- fatally -- it was TOO SLOW. It took FORTY MINUTES to get our food, which, as noted, was a burger and mac-n-cheese. No amount of entertainment could console the hungry children. Hardly anyone else was there. What on earth could have taken them so long?
My high ambience rating is for its suitability for children. I wouldn't go there by myself.
For price: Mr. B, as has been requested by others, please add a category in between "about right" and "very overpriced."

The food is okay, but remember this is a place for kids to play. The service is so so at times, but getting better. The owners are really nice. It is a place where you can go with your family, let the kids play games, do art etc. and you can have a conversation with your partner. I don't think that there are many places that are like this. Chuck E Cheese is noisy, annoying and the food is worse.

kids do have a great time - but the food is just so-so to positively gross...and there is a bizarre woman who works there that just "hangs out" with everyone while they eat and trys to chat - went there twice, same experience each time - even though the kids love it, won't be going back....

I just wish it was more stroller friendly inside. I have 1 yo twins and the stairs are just not practical.

"Moxie Spot: the restaurant everyone would love to love but just can't." Brooklyn Chicken, that is the perfect description. For those with kids, it's a good place to kill an hour or two and the tykes do seem to love going, but the food is atrocious, the menu way too ambitious (stick to a few tried and true dishes) and the DIY/service set-up is awkward. For those without kids, there's zero point going here, unless you're really dying to try below average food that tastes no better than a microwaved frozen dinner. I went there once and will never go back. Still unsure how a place like this makes money when parents and nannies sometimes buy as little as a cup of coffee while the rugrats have at it all afternoon. It's sad because the owner does seem to try hard...

I actually thought the food was pretty darn good for the price. I think I had meatloaf, or something. And, we killed time playing foosball (albeit, a cheap table) while we waited... which wasn't too long. The place was pretty empty when I was there. I'm guessing their location will be their biggest problem- kinda out of the way, but they sure did go all out making it a distinct place. I'd like to see that place survive.

We went there today with my daughter, as well as my cousin's little son. This place was a refreshing lunch for us as we were able to relax and hang out while our kids played in the little playroom set up on the left side of the restaurant. It was certainly a place that we would be willing to go to again.
I had the BLT with Sweet Potato Fries, my wife had the chicken soup, and between the remaining 7 of us that were there, we had egg dishes and various other sandwiches. The portions could be considered small, but since the restaurant caters to kids too, I can't complain. I'll definitely go back.

I went there with my almost 2 year old and my husband. While I love the concept of the place, I thought the food was too expensive for the small portion size and very mediocre. It reminded me of cafeteria food but much more expensive. We ordered nachos, hot chocolate, chicken fingers, philly cheese steak, and something else and everything was so so to bad. I almost felt like they would be better off offering fewer items that actually tasted good. The play room was great and it was nice to be able to sit there and enjoy a meal while my daughter played. We probably won't be going back because of the food.

For people with kids, this place is great. I wish it was closer to me. Who cares if the food is so-so? Your kids have a great time and you don't have to chase them around and you can relax. Love it.
For people without kids, don't be caught dead there.
