"Bedecked in pastel hues of orange and green, this tiny restaurant resembles an Easter egg turned inside out. The menu is miniscule too, focusing on bahn mi, the traditional Vietnamese sandwich," writes Justin Hartung for Citysearch.

"The classic combines spiced ground pork, pâté and a Spam-like Vietnamese ham product with mayonnaise and the refreshing crunch of cucumber, daikon and carrots. Sliced grilled pork, boneless pork chop, grilled chicken, shredded chicken or sardines can replace the ground pork and ham," says Florence Fabricant in the New York Times. And according to New York magazine, you can wash it all down with "bubble teas, Vietnamese coffee, and an iced egg-yolk soda made with seltzer and condensed milk."

Chowhound ChowDiva is a big fan of the place: "Hanco's is great, that's one place that I crave. I love the pork bahn mi. One sandwich is cheap and filling." But The Porkchop Express isn't impressed: "At $4.25, Hanco’s Classic was exorbitantly expensive on the scale of Banh Mi prices... But this Banh Mi was pretty ho-hum at any price. It might do in a pinch, or a drunken haze." What's your take on Hanco's?

I find this to be one of the most delicious and most affordable meals in our great borough. Takes a little longer than one might expect, and the atmosphere is what you'd expect for a four dollar sandwich. Yum.

Not only is the menu miniscule, but so are the sandwiches. They're about half the size of the (even cheaper and tastier) bahn mi's you can get in Brooklyn's Chinatown. I need two to fill up, and I'm a fairly skinny guy with an average appetite.

Still, it's nice to have a bahn mi joint I can walk to, and Hanco's turns out a respectable version, even if they are kinda skimpy with the pickled daikon. Not a bad place to get your bahn mi fix when you don't feel like making the trek to Ba Xuyen.

Hey PitBullNYC,

If you thought you were eating slimey monkey eyes, the boba tea MUST have been good. Because thats what they taste like going down...not that I've ever eaten monkey eyeballs.

Aside form that, I like Hanco's. I don't LOVE it but its good enough for a restaurant with 8 items on the menu.

Delicious sandwiches. Good bread and well-portioned stuffing. Better than the Nicky's on Atlantic, though their menu is "specialized" (limited) and they take their time. Still, order 10 minutes ahead and you're golden. Glad to have them in the neighborhood.

I ate here for the first time on sunday after eating alot of Bahn mi in sunset park and chinatown. It was good but had too much mayonnaise and as people stated above too small and expensive. Its funny because if this was the only bahn mi place in the city it would be a steal but the fact that you can get a monster one for 3.75 makes this place not as awesome.

This place sells one hell of a sandwich. It also has the advantage of being close to where I live. The sandwich may be smaller or more expensive than its counterparts in Chinatown, but I don't live in Chinatown. I live in a land where ham and cheese sandwiches are sold for $9 at french bistros. And while I could travel to Chinatown for a Bahn Mi, once I factor in the waste of time and the subway fare, I think this sandwich is well worth it.

Some tips for the critics:
For those who complain about how long it takes to get served, call ahead by 10 minutes.
To those who say its got too much mayo on it, ask for less mayo. My wife generally asks for no butter. Hanco's will follow your instructions.

The Tofu sandwich is my favorite, and second runner up is the Sardine sandwich. As for tea - the Almond flavored one is the best. I leave most of the bubbles though cuz more than 5 make me feel ill!

Obviously written by someone who's never had a bahn mi from Ba Xuyen.

Great sandwiches and greats. Zero atmosphere. A must for take-out.
