Coco Roco

"This Peruvian spot drew crowds long before Fifth Avenue became Park Slope's foodie frontier. As the name indicates, succulent rotisserie chicken is a specialty of the house... But it's the seafood dishes here that truly shine. Start with one of the seven varieties of seviche on the menu, including halibut or clams." says New York magazine. Now, the restaurant has expanded and has a second location on Smith Street.
"The inviting scent of rotisserie chicken is overwhelming--once you recover, you'll find a warmly decorated room with exposed brick and romantic, but not-too-dark, lighting. Service is inconsistent, but while you wait for your food, at least you can nosh on complimentary plantain chips, served with tangy dipping sauces," writes Justin Hartung for Citysearch.
Allison Bojarski for Gothamist digs Coco Roco's cheap chicken and tamalitos, but also says, "The empanadas are decent if not memorable, and the fried mixed seafood entree ($10.95) is pretty good, but we hold our strongest recommendation for the lime-coconut flan and several of the other desserts on offer, such as the banana fritters and the (highly cinnamon-y) rice pudding." What do you think about this place?

Like the Maryann's in Manhattan I am baffled by the longevity and popularity of this place. It is utter crap. Terrible. It is on my list as one of the worst meals I have had on 5th Ave.

The service and food at the 5th Avenue location has gotten worse over the years.

I don't know if the service is bad, but the food takes forever - you need to bring a snack..

The tamale appetizer is phenomenal, the fried seafood mixed entree is as well. And the mojitos are great! My husband and I have frequented both locations for years now and have always been impressed.
Their brunch is so-so, but good value.

I moved nearby in 2000 when Coco Roco was the only place in the 'hood. I loved the taste of the chicken [especially with that orange garlic sauce], but I noticed that everytime we ate there or had takeout, my wife and I had the runs.
Really bad. Every time.
Eventually we swore off eating there & we never had a similar experience anywhere else in the Slope.
To top it off, the one time I ordered the ceviche it was 'off' tasting - again, that's putting it mildly.
I really can't understand how they've stayed in business all these years....

Have eaten at Smtih St. location and the ceviche is nothing to write home about. However, the chicken is delicious and has become one of my favorite delivery meals.

Used to be better before they kept renovating to go 'upscale'. Stick to the basics, you can do well for cheap. Hot waitresses too!

Don't eat here!!!!
I bit into a piece of RAW chicken after getting takeout and called to complain. The woman was indefferent to my complaint, let alone offereing to replace the meal. "So what do you want me to do" was here response. When I said "Nothing, I just want you to know so other people don't get sick" she gave me a rude, Thanks.
On a previous occasion, we ordered the chocolate epanadas for desert and were given chichen!
This is a Salmonella outbreak waiting to happen!

In re the Boerum Hill location. The food is eh. The chicken is pretty good, as has been said, and the sauces are great. I used the place for an event this summer, and the staff was pleasant, if somewhat unresponsive, and LOTS of food was provided for the money. The space is pretty, and the outdoor space is nice, too.

Considering the number of times the 5th Ave location has been ordered CLOSED by the Board of Health, it's a wonder it's open at all now. Other business owners in the area have complained about Coco Rocco storing their chickens in an un-cooled meat locker (which hopefully has changed), or illegally covering or removing the closure notices in their windows. I haven't been to the other location, but it would have to be better. After my last trip to the Slope branch I swore never to eat there again, and that was 4 years ago.

I ate at the Court Street location once and there were mice scurrying around the patio in back. A few months later it was shut down by the BOH for about a week. The food was good, but needless to say I haven't been back since.
