Babouche

"Named after a type of ornate leather slippers, Babouche is a Moroccan/Mediterranean rim restaurant whose best feature is a sumptuous premises that may remind you of a harem or bathhouse. Bring a couple of friends and try to score the niche table in the rear," suggest the Village Voice.
As an appetizer, blogger pinknest recommends ordering the briouats, "crispy puff pastry filled with chicken and almonds. It was deliciously hot and spicy, and best of all, the top was dusted with powdered sugar. So the sweetness and the saltiness was delightful! Like eating little savory beignets." The menu is meat-heavy, but Veg-Out! Brooklyn enjoys the zaalouk, "a paste of eggplant, garlic, and tomato that reminded me of baba ganoush, but with a more delicate flavor. It came with ample pita slices and was served over arugula."
"Although this restaurant is a little pricey for Park Slope I also think that the staff has made some serious attempts to create an ambiance and the portions are fairly large, which makes it worthwhile in my book," says Chowhound mmm...food. And Metromix adds, "These prices would be more commonly associated with Manhattan, but the filet mignon in a truffle port wine sauce is a rare treat in any borough." How would you rate Babouche?

While it's pricey enough that my wife and I don't eat there often, we really like this restaurant! The food is delicious, the service is extremely pleasant, and the general ambience is very nice. I like the dim lighting, the heavy north-African style of the decoration, and the various arches built into the room. Definitely recommend it for anyone looking to splurge a bit, who wants actual value for the price.

agree completely with cw above. the briouats were phenomenal enough that i sought out the recipe low and high, found it, and realized how much work it takes to make. that makes having them even more worthwhile. (versus a plate of pasta and sauce at unnamed restaurants)

I had one of the least good restaurant experiences of my life here. Service was slow; one entree was overcooked & wasn't replaced until everyone else had finished. Management didn't even apologize - never mind buy us a drink or some such. Truly awful in every respect.

I've only gone a few times but expect that I will go back. I think of this place as my backup to Miriam's if Miriam's is too crowded. The food is good, but the service has definitely seemed a little slow to me.
I had a waiter who could not seem to understand that a couple eating brunch with a sleeping 4 month old want a check ASAP (before the kid wakes up and starts screaming). I asked for the check when our food was brought and then had to ask again when plates were cleared. The place was not crowded, so it just seemed to be some mental block on the part of the waiter (e.g., "do not bring check until they decline dessert" or whatever).
Anyway, the space is rather cool and they have plenty of it. If you go expecting a slow paced meal, you might not find the service annoying.

My wife and I went to Babouche's sister restaurant in Midtown right before this place opened. I'm happy to say that the Brooklyn location is even better - though it seems that it carried along some Manhattan prices. We've eaten here three times and enjoyed every visit. I think the awning they put up detracts from the ambiance, but you can't see it from inside, so it doesn't matter very much. This place is definitely worth popping in for a tagine.
