Pizza

"The dimly lit and oddly configured annex of the Carroll Gardens Irish bar P.J. Hanley’s produces credible pies in the unlikeliest of surroundings," says New York Magazine. Kim Severson of the New York Times notes that they serve "only two menu items: pizza margherita and chocolate chip cookies. There is a bar, but no takeout, no slices and no delivery. Granted, both items are delicious. Although sometimes inconsistent, South Brooklyn’s $12 pizzas usually come from the coal-fired oven with the right amount of char on a crunchy crust." And Erin Behan from A Brooklyn Life calls it "the neighborhood's second best pizza" — next to Lucali.

However, Slice's Adam Kuban says: "I've only been once but would not wholeheartedly recommend on that one visit, as the crust was very tough and rather bland." And Chowhound johnnym isn't a fan, either: "South Brooklyn Pizza is the *worst* pizza going. It's the exact same pie they've been serving at the bar at PJ Hanley's for years, except now that they're using the coal oven they burn it to cinders." What do you think about this place?

I went there once and found the pizza ok. We got four pies in our group and each was pretty differently cooked--from medium to charred. The music was terrible and way too loud (which they wouldn't turn down), and the general ambiance poor.

A few weeks later I believe I discovered them posting rave reviews about themselves using fake names on chowhound. That kind of soured me to their vibe and created some ill will. Don't think I'll be back.

I think they are aiming for more of a bar atmosphere than a restaurant. That said, I see most people there wanting to sit at a table rather than a stool. I have been a few times and the place is growing on me. My kid likes it because it is low key. I think they will be starting take-out.

Sbarros has better pizza.

i wish they did take out...then you wouldn't have to eat there.

the music is absolutely awful...it shouldn't be something that would prevent me from eating somewhere, but this is the absolute worst. Last time we were there there was a loud band playing next door at pjhanleys (unfortunately, only a curtain separates that place from pizza place) AND the pizza place itself was playing someone's terrible ipod mix really loud. It was a competition...who can play crappy music the loudest.

The lighting's terrible but i don't want to completely go off.

The pizza's pretty good...it's no Lucali but it's ok. Only
margarita pizza and cookies (how hard is it to have a few toppings people?)

The pizza's okay and the cookie's are good but, I dunno, it's a weird combo. And please, PLEASE put some more lights in the place. It was crazy dark at 6:00 pm.

My first and last experience their went like this: Come in, sit down. Place is empty, but it is is a little early - one other table seated. Before I even have my jacket off, the waitress is trying to take our order. Manage to fend her off as we (party of two) get seated. Order a beer. Another couple sits down. We order one pizza to share. Beer takes forever to arrive. Our pizza, however, is cooked quickly, and promptly delived to our new table neighbors. They are just kind of looking at it. It sits there for about 3-4 minutes. Waitress finally realizes (I was pretty sure that was our pie, but, how do I know?), and without saying a word just takes it from the stranger' table and places it on ours and walks off. Pizza was about as good as the service. I would not recommend the place to anyone.

I haven't eaten at the pizza place, but at the end of the day, it's still P.J. Hanley's...which means 1) having to send back your food at least once for one reason or another, 2) lackluster service at best, 3) general inconsistency, and 4) super-sketchy regulars lingering inside and out. And what's with the Christmas color palate? It's an eyesore.

No thanks. I've given Hanley's too many second chances. No more. Especially with Lucali and Luna Rosa in the hood.

BTW, Hanley's is a waste of one of the best, if not the best, outdoor spaces in the neighborhood. So frustrating.
