Scopello

"Sleek and modern, with a distinct Sicilian accent, this ristorante is a welcome answer to a perennial outer-borough question: Where to eat near BAM?" says New York magazine. "Named after a hilltop Sicilian town, this Fort Greene restaurant is done up in the colors of a blazing sunset, fiery reds and soothing yellows. A sculpture of a ram's head overlooks the cool crowd, whose own climbing experience is limited to stairs in a brownstone," Citysearch adds.
"Homemade crabmeat-stuffed ravioli and braised short ribs are on the menu. This is island cuisine, though, so you’ll want to try a fish dish, such as fresh, tender, baked sardines scented with bay leaves and lemon and dotted with raisins and pine nuts," says Time Out New York. NFT's Sho Spaeth recommends Scopello's "wine-marinated" leg of lamb and their antipasto misto appetizer: "I was satisfied with the portions of meat and cheese, but the true star of the platter was the eggplant caponata. It hinted at a 'hidden gem' quality to the restaurant." What do you think about Scopello?

Looking forward to the comments. No idea that this place existed...probably the closest nice Italian place to me. Saraghina (cor. Lewis Ave & Halsey) is not scheduled to open for a few more months. There was a pizza tasting there last Thursday and I don't think I've had pizza anywhere in NYC as good as this. Wood fired oven, thin crust, delicious. he's going to do a pasta tasting soon and I bet it'll be heaven.

Scopello has a huge bar scene in the front thanks to the really friendly owner so the quiet restaurant at the back is often overlooked. I agree that hidden in the menu there are a few Sicilain gems like the pasta with sardines, the caponata - an incredible Sicilian cold eggpalnt salad with has a distinct sweet and sour taste and it is of Arabic origin, and if on the menu try the baked cassata a Sicilian comfort food dessert never found on menus. prices are ok, also wine list well thought and with a few affordable options I have had soem difficulties at time with slow service and I wished the woner woudl pay more attention to thsi since it is really the only reason some of my friends have had problems with them (as in pre-theatre hurry)!

for the record, i had the WORST meal here one day after a great show at BAM. I've lived in this area for 10 years and knew this space as various other restaurants and just never got around to trying it under the new management. It seemed like a great place to go after the show. We had a forgettable meal which made me think I was better off at the burger joint next door. We also had really bad service. I can't remember what I ordered (and it was literally only 2 months ago!) which says something because I am a total foodie, but I can remember promising myself to never go back. There are too many good places in the area to visit then to throw money away at such a bland, mediocre experience.

Tried this place two times years ago in the first year it was there. Both times the meal was very subpar. Drinks were nice, ambiance was pretty nice, but the food was not good. I always wondered if they improved because they've clearly stayed in business. I recall a particularly bad risotto with no flavor that was overdone.

Meh - this place is "ok" I've eaten there once and I can't say I was impressed enough to go back. There are so many more interesting and better choices near by....

My children and I have been customers of Scopellos's for more than 3 years.
Our experience has been nothing but exceptional and the food outstanding.
The warm and friendliness of the owner and its staff make every dining experience at Scopello’s so special! The food has a Mediterranean flare which clearly comes directly from the owners influence. Fabrizio is a wonderful host and my family and I will continue to go there we hope for many years to come. The bar scene is also very lively and I have made great friends and had many laughs till the wee hours of the morning! ( of course that’s without my children ha ha )

i went this past spring and the meal was very average - i don't even remember what i ate. i can barely muster enough words to write a review. (i love love italian food when it is simply prepared with the best ingredients.) only 3 tables dining at around 8pm should have been a sign.

Seems to be VERY mixed. I'll go and post a review.

I've had great experiences with the food but the service is terrible. In fact, once when I was there with my roommate we were treated terribly by the bar tender, who even made odd side comments about our age (she maybe thought we were underage... but if that was the case, why wouldn't she just card us if she was worried?)... also have had awful table service pretty much each time i've been tehre... the gnocchi is incredible, though. seriously. As for ambience, it looks much, MUCH better in the dark.

I love this place. its just like a lot of restos opening up in Palermo now, young and cool, putting a new twist on our old food traditions. The sarde beccafico keep it real and the ribs, oh the ribs! the ribs at Scopello are so good i dream about them. I've had memorable fresh pastas here, esp. black ravioli with crabmeat and the casarecci with sausage, and the wine list is uncommon, with an unusually large offering of really good sicilian wines. i go because i feel i get great quality for a moderate price. i tend to agree with some of the other posters here that the service could bear some improvement. my experience and that of my friends who go here is that the people are nice, the owner is a cool funny guy, and a lot of beautiful folks eating and drinking there, but the service is inconsistent, sometime great, most times just too slow. i go when i have time to relax with my friends... for desert try the casatelle, hard to get them this hot and fresh off the road to the beach at Scopello. If you want a taste of Italy as it is today but cant’ pay the airfare, at least Scopello is close.

I had another wonderful meal at Scopello last night. It was so good I woke up early just to write a review. These guys are real Italians and thats what you get when you come here. The steak was perfect, the wine selection impeccable and the service was on point. The crowd is mixed which is nice. The owner and his staff make a huge effort to make you feel welcome which is what a neighborhood restaurant should do.
The decor is warm and inviting and the world music playing in the background makes you want to move your hips and have another mojito! By he way, in the middle of dinner I switched to mojitos that were delish.

Scopello is a real find--a cozy but stylish restaurant with great Sicilian food, right near BAM. It has a terrific staff, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg. My wife and I have eaten there many times, as a couple and with friends, and have never had a disappointing meal.
Some of our favorites include grilled calamari salad, pappardelle al ragu, lamb shank with polenta, short ribs over risotto and cassatelle. The specials are usually excellent. We like the choice of nero d'avola wines. Scopello's diverse clientele, attractive decor, informality and well-chosen music creates a good vibe in the restaurant and the bar. The management and wait staff are attentive and friendly.
We hosted a large party at Scopello and they handled it perfectly.
It's hard to believe that some of the negative comments I'm reading describe the same Scopello we love. Maybe some jealous competitors?

Ate here for the first time last night and was somewhat impressed. The service was good but there were only five tables full to wait on. My measure of good service is that my water glass never gets empty and I drink a lot of it with my wine. That said, our waiter never told us that there were specials. There's an Italian waiter there who seems more knowledgeable about everything (including the specials). The appetizer of fried sardines was one of the best I've ever had..crispy, no bones, tasty, not oily. I had the pappardelle with meat ragu. It was fine: al dente but they could have done a better ragu instead of just ground meat...maybe lamb, wild boar or the remains of yesterday's beef short ribs. My partner had the beef short rib which was very, very good on a bed of risotto and au jus. I will be having that next time. It was "fall off the bone " perfect. Great wine list from $30 to over $100. You must get the house dessert...the Casatelle Scopello...that ricotta cream cheese was fantastico. All in $100 ex tip for two with one bottle of wine plus one extra glass...cuz I needed one more!!!

Just putting the word out that the owner of Scopello, on Lafayette Ave in Fort Greene, drives his motorcycle like a maniac, including on the sidewalk, terrorizing pedestrians. When asked about it, he didn't apologize; he seemed to think this was normal behavior.
I recommend that other Brooklynites join me in not eating at this restaurant. (Also, I hear the food isn't very good.)

A group of us girls went here on a hum bug after a night at BAM. Good Choice! I think i've found a new restaurant home!! The drinks are amazing, I love the bartender Kate... All of her drinks are amazingly on point! There was a nice size crowd there that night but we were treated with so much attention. I ordered the Salmon Panini and was very pleased.
Anyone who wants to enjoy some good food, drinks and decor, should definitely try check this place out. You wont be disappointed. I'm so happy to have finally found a place right in my backyard... I don't have to travel to Manhattan all the time now. Brava!
