Quercy

"Owned by Jean-François Fraysse the man behind West Chelsea’s La Lunchonette, the restaurant feels more provincial (it’s named after his native region in southwestern France) than faux-Parisian," says New York magazine. The New Yorker notes that Quercy's storefront at 242 Court Street was a long-time "cursed address" before this French restaurant's arrival: "The restless, this-plus-that fusion of previous tenants gives way to a well-practiced rendition of the French paradox: sautéed foie gras, boeuf bourguignon, and Château Quercy, or sweetbreads, steak au poivre, and a bottle of Cahors. Naturally, Fraysse’s blessed tarte Tatin, in both apple and pear versions, reappears in Brooklyn. All of the fare is rough hewn and served with assurance."
Chowhound jimmyjazz has noticed that Quercy often seems more empty than it should be but highly recommends checking out their cold-weather specialties: "my favorites have always been their heartier fare such as a great cassoulet and, without a doubt, the best steak au poive in the neighborhood." Fellow 'Hound puppimus raves: "Quercy is about as nontrendy as it gets, while still being delicious! A no brainer!" And MShapiro adds, "I never had a bad meal there for brunch or dinner." What's your take on this place?

It's been a while--3 years maybe-- but my wife and I had a delicious meal here. I also recall some atmospheric live music. Very positive, if vague, recollection.

Never trendy but always good French comfort food. You can just pretend you are visiting grandmere. The specials are never special (always the same) but reliably good.

Glad to hear more on Quercy - I've always wanted to go there, and while I can't comment on it specifically, I can say the Quercy/Perigord region is considered by most of the French to be the 'best' food in the contry. And having travelled there extensively, I have to agree! Especially nice that it avoids the Paris-bistrot-clone syndrome too.

Many people like the skate wing. My favorite is sauteed mushrooms. I like the place because it is not crowded or noisy.
Don't think they have had the live music for long time(accordian-singer).

This is one of my favorite French restaurants and I have been to many. Not trendy at all and--as mentioned above--not a faux-bistro copycat. Just delicious hearty food, good service, laid-back atmosphere. This place definitely deserves to be more crowded!

I love this place! Something about the shape and color of the room, scuffed but well-proportioned and basically elegant. Not to mention food that always makes me leave the table happy. Nice singer with guitar several nights a week, think her name is Topferova, sings a lot of Brazilian and Spanish songs. Often have excellent cold soups. Menu doesn't change much, apart from seasonal variations, and I'm content with that. My favorite dish (quail stuffed with foie gras) was unavailable for a long time and is now back on the menu. Heaven is dinner there with my wife, plus quail, plus bottle of Champagne (which they price absurdly low). I'm raving about this place not because I would like to see it crowded but out of sheer self-interest.... I want to make sure it survives and prospers so I can keep going there.

Haven't been there, but the highly positive reviews have put it on my list! My fiancee's French, and certainly wouldn't complain about another option for quality, authentic cuisine.

The food is amazing but the decor is...strange. Some of the decor is quaint, but the rest makes you scratch your head.

I agree with Shells. The food is pretty good...but the decor is very strange. When I first moved to Brooklyn I thought the place was probably dirty. It just looks that way from the outside and the interior is a little weird. If they want more traffic, I think it could use a little facelift. Not a full on renovation but removing a some of the clutter and cleaning the awning/windows could be beneficial

My absolute favorite. All of the above raves are true. A wee bit pricey for our modest wallets, so we save this place for a special night out (though it is a very brief walk downstairs). My fave: the steak, wife loves the cassoulet. Great wine, great for conversation, unpretentious, and a good neighbor. The bench appears in the summertime and nicely goes away in the fall shortly after school starts. Thank you JF for quality ingrediants deftly prepared and served with warmth.

Don't kill me but.... I USED to go there until I went w/ my wife and friends for dinner and had a roach walk across the table. When we told the waitress she was like "oh sorry" took a napkin killed it and left. We were so freaked we left and never went back. Every time my wife and I pass it we call it roachcy...
Sorry, true story.

This is one of the best French restaurant's in Brooklyn, in terms of food. Too bad that happen with the roach. I guess I would be freak out too. The food is always consistent, very good and friendly waitresses, as well as the owner. Of course, everyone has a different experience on the food, but I really like the scallops, steak and the duck. They are not big on decor, if the decor was much better they would have a fantastic business. Prices are reasonable and food is good. My mother like the food too.
