La Taqueria

La%20Taqueria.jpg
New York magazine's Jon Steinberg describes the festive interior of La Taqueria: "A parade of politically tinged, gallery-worthy murals by local artist Jeramy Turner cover the walls; a ceiling painted vibrant Baja blue is festooned with hanging metal stars; and wooden tables inlaid with colorful tiles feel custom-made for bottles of cerveza and pitchers of margaritas." The Slope Scope blog says, "The business has two halves: a sit down restaurant and a take out burrito bar. While the take out food is the same you will get in the restaurant, I recommend you grab a table for the full effect."

The restaurant is owned by Los Angeles-born Marty Medina, who is also behind Rachel's on Fifth Avenue. Citysearch's Justin Hartung is a big Rachel's fan: "Finally, a place to take West Coast transplants who whine about New York's sad lack of Cali-style Mex. Burritos the size of footballs boast fresh ingredients like tender, deeply seasoned barbacoa or plump grilled shrimp." New York magazine's Kat Kinsman agrees: "Take-out business is brisk, portions are huge, prices are reasonable, and, come fair weather, the festively lit back patio is an intoxicating hideaway for sipping Jarritos or house-made sangria." What do you think about these two spots?

Been to Rachel's way more than La Taqueria.
if you ask nice they used to steam up the burrito shells for you and melt some cheese on there as well. sometimes its hard to find exactly what you are looking for, but they will usually make you anything you ask for.

and the salsa bar is pretty great.

The servers at La Taq are fantastic. Always cheerful and eager to please. The food is fresh, wholesome and filling.
Outside of Southern California, probably the best of its type.

I went to the 5th ave spot this wknd, and thought it was pretty good. Actually, their chips and salsa kinda made it worth the visit. The enchiladas were a bit small, but they tasted good, so I guess I'll take quality over quantity, since I'm not in college anymore.
Added bonus: they played Whipping Post while I was eating.

Love this place. So glad it's right around the corner from me!

oh good lord, this place is awful (7th ave, at least. haven't tasted 5th ave). do NOT, i repeat, do NOT take west coasters here and expect them to be pleased. we went on the recommendation of a neighbor and were sorely disappointed. yes, they have lots of haight-ashbury paraphernalia (along with hawaiian stuff, for some reason) that sort of conditions you to expect mission-style food. but no. NO. NOOOOO. it is not. we got a mix of dishes, to try to get a fair sampling. the only thing that was good were the black beans, which are somewhat hard to mess up. everything else, yuck. the intrinsic taste of each of the ingredients was off. as in: unripe avocados during late summer; meats in a marinade that was just not good, no matter what one was expecting. and the proportion of the ingredients in the dishes was off as well. as in: a chicken burrito that was at least 3/4ths rice; one shrimp in a shrimp taco; etc.

maybe when you're sitting down and drinking margaritas the experience is different. but we got takeout and there the service was horrible. waited for 1/2 hour for something they said would take 5 minutes. cashier far too cool for school. tops of dishes improperly secured such that juices of all variety covered the bag and all napkins, etc. we will never go back - not with the much MUCH MUUUUUUUUUUUUUCH better chavella's within delivery distance.

Rachel's is one my staples. The burritos and taquitos are great, but their enchiladas are mysteriously disappointing.

I went to this place when I first moved into the hood, 1994. never went back.

Best fish tacos (fried cod - mmmm) I've ever had in my whole entire life. Chipotle tarter sauce is serious. Available on Fridays. Get'em with the platter or individually (cheap).

nothing life changing but their big and not that expensive.

actually this is one of the first places i ate at in park slope.

The sit-down experience is very pleasant, and the food is pretty tasty. The Margaritas are a little underpowered for their price, but the servers are nice and you're definitely not left wanting for food. The take-out is not bad for a cheap-ish taco joint, but living in SoCal exposed me to much, better Mexican and Baja food. Also, the take-our side has really surly service compared to the eat-in side. I grab food here once or twice a month, but only if there's no line. The people who wait out in the street for this food are nuts.

Oh, and Bogota's fish tacos, while not perfect, are light years better than La Taq's.

I really like the food at both locations. I live right around the corner from the 7th Ave location, though, and was really bummed about the transformation of the main restaurant into "La Taq." While they were renovating it, I was looking in the window and the general manager was standing there. He told me that it was going to be more "upscale" and "improved" because - watch your gag reflex - I "deserve it." Predictably, it's now more expensive. It's also much less comfortable, and more of a bar than a restaurant. I used to go regularly but don't anymore because there aren't enough tables. It seems like they are getting greedy by trying to squeeze more money out of a place that was already really popular.

There are no good Fish Tacos east of California.

sixyearsandcounting wrote a review on November 4, 2008 4:31 PM

Well, I'm a San Diego native. Day in and day out, this is still the most dependable Mexican place I've found in Brooklyn with food similar to home. However, if you're looking for cuisine from southern Mexico, go elsewhere.

Pragonetti wrote a review on November 4, 2008 4:45 PM

Consistent and Good! Not exactlly the most autentic, but very good.

I have tried as much of the so called mexican food as brooklyn has to offer and I like both these places.

The price good as well, unlike Barrio!

La Taqueria's are better than I've had in Waikiki. Better than Bogota's (catfish???...scavenger).

Decent burritos, and I like the salsas.
I didn't understand why the 7th ave location went from counter to table service...now it takes too long and is harder to order.
