Chiles y Chocolate

Chiles & Chocolate's take-out menu attempts to set their cuisine apart from the typical Tex-Mex by stating: "We are not a Mexican restaurant." However, they do serve the cuisine of Oaxaca, which is a state in southern Mexico known for its rich mole sauces. Citysearch's Justin Hartung writes, "Of the three moles available, the maroon-colored, complexly flavored Coloradito shines an intoxicating accompaniment to tender pork--while perfectly grilled duck medallions benefit from a peanut-enhanced mole."
Chowhound seb reports on an "excellent meal" here and calls their mole "wonderful," but fellow 'Hound Peter Cherches says, "I went to Chiles & Chocolate once and thought the mole negro was awful heavy and relatively flavorless, with very dry pork." The Amateur Gourmet likes their huitlacoche (which translates to "corn fungus") quesadilla, describing it as having "a muted, earthy flavor subtle and strange and not like anything you've ever had," but the highlight of his meal there was the flan: "It was fantastic: creamy, rich, sweet but not cloying. Enough to make a flan convert out of anyone." How would you rate this place?

it can get expensive and the service is normally just one person but the brunch is good and the tacos are great.

Service is friendly but not speedy, due to the one-waitress factor. The medium mole was very testy but the dark mole was a bit overkill. Not so much too chocolate-y as just ... too strong. Couldn't taste anything except the sauce. Mexican Corn appetizer was delicious. Prices are a little high and the ambience is a little low, but it's definitely worth checking out. Oh, and the rumor is you can sometimes get fried grasshoppers here -- no idea if it's true or not?

guacamole is a buck extra with the grasshoppers. Thats really the reason I first went.

Got to remind everyone that that tacky and in every other way not so good Mexican restaurant on the second floor on 5th Ave. with the neon sign -- yes, the one with the terrible margaritas -- has outrageously good homemade mole sauce, the best I have ever tasted, in fact. So go there please. It's a tragedy about the margaritas though. (Oh, but the chips are tasty.)

I really like this place. I eat here often as it's right around the corner.
These two blocks of 7th Avenue with Chiles and Chocolate, Olive Vine next door, Oshima, Mr. Wonton, La Taqueria and Cousin John's bakery are the best of the 7th Ave. restaurant scene, in my opinion. All great options...

Good food, crowded space, slow service, not cheap.
I was here for brunch once and someone from the staff had to keep running in and out of the restaurant. It was a chilly morning and have the door flung open and cold air rush through about 10 times during the meal didn't fill me with happiness.
The food is worth the inconvenience, although I prefer getting delivery.
P.S. We still need a pricing option between "about right" and "very overpriced".

On their first day open for business, I had to pop my head in and tell them it might be a good idea to remove the large "Made in India" fluorescent orange stickers from the backs of the "Spanish Colonial" look chairs. The chairbacks were turned to the front windows showing these loud "Made in India" stickers! I haven't eaten at this restaurant because of food allergies but a girlfriend who lives nearby has gushed about the food...but she's susceptible to such things so I'm not sure really how good it is.

Pretty good for what it is.

I have gotten takeout from this place a few times. It is decent enough but the mole is somewhat bland. I prefer the mole I make at home.

Oh wow we had lunch here today with the missus and have to agree that the food was very good especially the mole Coloradito. Service was very quick too but this is probably because there were only 2 other customers @ the time.
Jdoo: we spent some time in Oaxaca and have to say the mole here is pretty authentic maybe it was the type you ordered no? Anyways we will be ordering from there in the near future:)

Now... Let me start by saying that my girlfriend and I love the food here. That said, the experience we had there a few months back wasn't trumped by the great food.
We sat in the back of the back (it's super nice) and had finished our meal and were waiting for the check to come. I was facing the kitchen, my girlfriend was facing the back wall. She was telling me a story and out of the corner of my eye, I saw something move on the floor. There was no one else in the garden so it was really quiet. Turned out to be about 5 mice walking around on the floor of the garden. I calmly told her (so she wouldn't freak out) and we walked to the front. We ran into the manager on the way out and told him what we had just seen and that we weren't super upset about it, just a little skeeved. He played really dumb and asked if they were still there. I responded by saying that they didn't seem too worried about being back there. He went back to check, we paid our bill and left. The least he could've done was to offer a discount or something. Unfortunately, we wont be going back.
I realize there are probably creatures all over NYC restaurants. I just think they should have their shit under control enough that said creatures aren't running around while the customers are still there.

I just wanted to say this: why does everyone have to shit on Tex-Mex? Texas was a part of Mexico for almost 150 years. Tex-Mex food may not be what people eat in Mexico now, but it's just as "authentic" as any other regional Mexican cuisine.
