Black Iris

Black%20Iris.jpg
"This souk-like Jordanian spot excels at crumbly lamb sausage and outsize balls of falafel, well browned on the outside, dense and herby within,'" says the Village Voice of Black Iris. Melena Ryzik for New York magazine writes: "There are equal numbers of alluring vegetarian and meat dishes, like leek, scallion, and fenugreek pitza and leg of lamb with lemon-mint mayonnaise... the chicken ouzi is a fragrant puck of flaky dough filled with rice, raisins, almonds, vegetables, and meat (ask for extra yogurt sauce)."

Chowhound Rebka27 often orders delivery from Black Iris and raves about their "Cheap, delicious Middle Eastern food... I love the appetizer combo, anything lamb, and the parsley/cheese rolls especially." And if you're looking to take the kids out for a casual dinner, Metromix recommends Black Iris, too: "Families frequent the restaurant for the large, easy-to-share portions." What do you think about this place?

You forgot to mention it is BYOB.

Oooh, a restaurant I've been to. I love this place. My tenants had their wedding dinner here, after they got married at City Hall, and everyone had a great time. The food was excellent and plentiful. It was BYOB, but that enabled them to get the wine they wanted at a good price. The manager and staff were helpful and accommodating, and the service was great.

I been back several times, and the food and service has been just as good, and they remember me. I like the comfort/peasant food of most nationalities and cuisines, especially in stews and casseroles, and Black Iris serves inexpensive, good, plentiful food. I especially recommend the ouzi. Yum!

Consistently nice. Nothing mind blowing, but well prepared and a good price.

We've been going here for years. The food is consistently fresh and good, and the staff is very nice. Highly recommended for a very moderately priced meal.

Solid choice for ordering in. The lamb pitza rocks. Decent lentil soup. I've enjoyed the lamb sandwich too.

This place is great for takeout/delivery and eating in. Very kid friendly. Consistently great food. I love their lentil soup and falafel.

Discovered this little gem of a place before a concert at Masonic Hall. Prices were reasonable, food was terrific enough to satisfy two picky eaters and a foodie. It reminded all of us of the Olive Vine cafe in Park Slope. I don't know if they're related, but they have similar styles and quality.

Offbalance: This is owned and operated by the same people who own Olive Vine. In fact, some of the staff came from Olive Vine when they had a place on 6th Avenue in the north slope years ago.

Good warm food for teh up coming cold dark nights.

I've been meaning to go here for a long time... and now these comments have *extra* convinced me that I need to get there. It's hardly difficult to get to, just keep forgetting.

I love this place for delivery - their pizzas are actually really really delicious and very fresh. Good neighborhood staple for good value.

Took out a few years ago and was underwhelmed. But based on the ratings I'll have to give it another go.

I looooooooove Black Iris! Come here lots, it's way better than nearby Zaytoon's. The falafel are delicious, and they give you unlimited pita for your hummus! (Great hummus). The falafel sandwich is ginormous and only about $5. Definite value. Probs my favorite cheapo meal on the DeKalb strip.

This place is great, the people who run it are so friendly. Our daughters love to eat there and they always make such a fuss over them. The food is reliably good and the prices are very reasonable. It's a great Fort Greene standby...

A few weeks ago I ordered a takeout schwarma sandwich from these guys .. the cap from a squeeze bottle (probably for the hot sauce) apparently came loose and fell into my sandwich, and i bit down on it ... ouch ...

i understand this stuff happens. but when i brought the cap back to show it to them, they looked at me like i was crazy, and didn't seem to believe me. as if i was making it up ...

i doubt i'll go there again. which is a shame, because there's absolutely no decent takeout in fort greene.

hmmm, if I saw these reviews and high scores and I had made a trek from antoher neighborhood to try this spot, I would be pretty disappointed. This place is fine and while I still go from time to time, I am still depresses that NY for whatever reason can't seem to produce a great middle eastern spot....ever been to Paris or even Alexandria, VA?? The real deal.
3 out of four times I have ordered falafel here, it has clearly been pre-cooked and then microwaved creating a chewy soggy mess. One time they were freshly fried and divine. I am not sure why they would do this since it is the proper way to prepare and serve falafel and I am sure they know this. Maybe they just think we don't know any better.
Their tabouli has too much bulgar and it too is lazily chopped wiith big parsley leaves and chunks of green onions. The hummus needs more lemon.
I like that they make their own dough for pita though and the ambience is bare bones but kind of charming and rustic at the same time. The owner seems like a nice guy and the staff is fine.

Walk past Black Iris recently one morning on my way to the subway stop with my girlfriend when she suddenly stopped in her tracks and gasped at the site of hundreds of RAT S*IT all over the banquette and floor in the dining room. We made it a point to look in the windows each morning when we walked past and sure enough there they were each and every morning. Needless to say we haven't eaten there so I can't rate the food, but on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give then a 1 on rodent control.

Have been going here for years, always looked a little dirty to me but food was good. Recently though, I found roaches crawling on the table! At first I thought I was imagining it, but it continued to happen. They brought my food, I told the waitperson who told the owner, he appologized and said he would not charge me for my food (which I did not attempt to eat). I left, and will not go back.

That's ^^^ really unfortunate. Something that probably occurs in many restaurants but that isn't often seen by patrons.

Despite that I have to say I've always liked this place. Delivery is fast, food is tasty and affordable. Portions are good - my girlfriend and I are plenty satisfied sharing one entree and one app.
