Baked

"This spinoff of Manhattan's Chocolate Bar incorporates a modern lodge aesthetic. The walls are paneled with light wood and painted a rich brown. White subway tiles get orange grout, and a trippy deer-inspired 'mirror' and brilliant chandelier frame the counter teaming with freshly baked goods," says Citysearch's Erin Behan.
"Baked aspires to be a cozy neighborhood hangout, furnishing residents and intrepid day-trippers alike with breakfast scones, chipotle-cinnamon brownies, and specialty cakes like the Red Hook Red Hot. A light lunch menu of soups, salads, and sandwiches is also available," says New York magazine.
And according to Chowhound seb, Baked (which recently published its own cookbook) is totally worth a trip to Red Hook: "This is my favorite bakery in the world. And I've been to some of the best bakeries in Europe. Like a previous poster already said, this is not a French bakery, but what they do (muffins, biscuits, cakes) is the best of its kind." What are your thoughts on Baked?

Super tasty... simple as that. Though a bit overpriced (except maybe their cupcakes, those are not too expensive)

Agree with tyber. Yum. Only real complaint is that sometimes the music can be a lil loud. Everytime we go down to the Hook we ALWAYS go in.

Agree with commenters above. They are sweet without being cloying. Just perfect sweetness/moistness/tastiness ratios. I had their cupcakes and one large cake for my wedding even -- they were a hit with everybody!

Yes, the baked goods are terrific, but don't count on that 'light lunch menu.' They told me (when we arrived for lunch "and" around one or so) that they were "out of sandwiches," which were delivered 3x/week. Out of soup, too. Heck, how about walking down to Fairway and getting some more? Also, don't count on a table; one hipster + laptop will spread out languidly over a booth for 7 while 2 moms and 3 kids struggle with the window seat. I usually annoy someone by asking to share a table, but not everyone has my gall when fueled by a cupcake.

brenda, dont feel youre annoying them. they probably spread out (as i have) because the space is there, and wont feel annoyed by you. and if they do eff 'em. i sit down w/o asking. its not a right for 1 person to take up the space of 8.

I don't know why this is being reviewed as a lunch spot or really anything other than a bakery/coffeshop. It's great that they bring in lunch items, but seriously Brenda, instead of b*tching, why don't *you* walk down to Fairway for lunch if they're out? The view from the cafe is great and the food's amazing *and* cheap. But BAKED's raison d'etre are the incredible cakes, cookies, and cupcakes, etc. that they make. And for those, well, they never disapoint. I will bow down to them for their sweet and salty cake alone.
And as for the people taking up space, I don't think it's any different from any other coffee shop.
