Los Pollitos II

"The original Los Pollitos is a takeout joint in Sunset Park; this Slope spin-off presents an expanded but similarly inexpensive menu in slightly more decorous surroundings," writes Steven Stern for Citysearch. "Businesspeople picking up a rotisserie chicken to take home, couples sipping margaritas at outdoor tables, a group of six celebrating in the white-tableclothed dining room—all seem happy here," says Time Out New York.
"The tortilla soup has a nice kick, and the Super Nachos live up to their name with tender pork or beef and heaping dollops of guacamole and sour cream. Seafood dishes don’t fare quite as well: Grilled calamari with chipotle can sometimes be tough, and the salmon al limon is at times both bitter and bland," says New York magazine's T Sahara Meer.
Chowhound amysep suggests, "Try the sopes - cheap, plentiful and delicious. Also the tostones with the creamy garlic sauce on the side. A winner every time." But fellow 'Hound brooklyncook says that "the delivery/pickup procedure sucks... I do still enjoy this place tremendously for their food, but the service is bringing me down, and I'm ordering less and less from there." What do you think about Los Pollitos II?

"Cheap" is right. This restaurant is great if you love gristle-y chicken... at least they have margaritas to help you forget.

The chicken at El Pollo on 5th Ave b/w 1st and 2nd Streets is far, far better.

Ate brunch there once and left unimpressed. The steak and eggs I got didn't have much flavor or heat, despite being drenched in red sauce. The service was pleasant enough, though, and it wasn't very expensive.

i actually had to sign up to make comments b/c as i was reading I noticed my quote was here. HA! We actually love Pollitos and feel it's underrated by many. If you want to read more about why and what we love about it, check out a blog post we wrote a long time ago: http://www.weareneverfull.com/little-chickens-for-little-money/
and for the guy above who chooses Mezcals, well I could see why you wouldn't really like Pollitos. Pollitos is not tex-mex. go for the chicken, the soup, the carne asada, the tostones, the rice and beans and some of their spectacular specials. it's our go-to cheap restaurant.

Los Pollitos II is a scam. Don't use you credit card. For about ten years I have been going to Los Pollitos about once a month. It was close and used to be an endearing and cheap neighborhood place with no pretension. Now? Forget it. It has been getting progressively worse in recent years and I have been having quite a few miserable experiences – mostly service related. But after my most recent visit, last night will be the last time.
Why is that? For a variety of reasons.
The constant nagging to order something you don’t want “Waiter: Are you sure that you don’t want guacamole? Maybe I will bring it?”
Arguing with you to order a larger serving of something you do not need or want. “No, we said a small pitcher of margaritas. We really don’t want a large pitcher (for the third time).”
But this is the big reason: They charge a 20% gratuity (unannounced) added on a bill for PARTY OF TWO AFTER the TAXES. That is a roughly a 30% service charge on the original bill! They total the bill, add tax and then add twenty percent on top of that. How unethical. What are we, tourists in Times Square? We are a quiet couple from the neighborhood! So now we are tipping on the tax. So, we entered “already included” on the tip line on the card receipt and signed of on the total. IT GETS WORSE! They then added another 20% to the credit card!! They DOUBLED the bill with service charges!! For two people! What would they do for a party?
What is with that? A 30% service charge! Years ago, one could go into Los Pollitos II and order a taco and they would treat you well. Now, if you are not ordering a huge amount of food, the treat you with a complete disregard. And if you do order substantially, they gouge you!
So some advice: BEWARE! CHECK THE BILL BEFORE PAYING AT Los Pollitos II!! DO NOT USE YOUR CREDIT CARD!!

update....
We went last night to los pollitos and everything about the experience sucked.
1)service= awful.. even though there are thousands of waiters standing around, we had no silverware, had to ask for water, no napkins, etc. food took forever
2) food= awful.... margaritas sucked, guacamole had no flavor, fish tacos were disgusting.
finally, the waiter miscalculated our total ( overcharged us by $10) and we spent $50 on a terrible dinner experience.. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!

Los Pollitos II has been scratched off my restaurant list.
Having been eating there on and off for years and like the freshness of the food. Favorite dish is the sopes.
Went there last week and the service was so horrible that we swore we will never go back. The waiter totally bungled our order repeatedly. We walked out.
