Lobo

"Lobo piles on Southwestern decor that tips perilously close to being kitschy. Sombreros and spurs line the walls; banquettes are covered in a cow pattern," writes Citysearch's Justin Hartung, who recommends Lobo's "spicy" ancho-chili margarita. But New York magazine's Jon Steinberg complains that "most dishes are too bland to be considered authentic. An enchilada and taco combo known as The Wolf could benefit from peppery flame, as could the mushy, corn-deprived pork tamales and rubbery chipotle shrimp."
"I've always wondered who in their kitchen thought it was a good idea to use american cheese on everything... Cheese enchiladas with american inside are...ew," says Chowhound bklyngrl. Fellow 'Hound Get In My Belly adds, "I went to the one on 5th Ave in Park Slope about a year ago. The drinks were good, but the meal literally may have been the worst food I've ever had." This is a lot of hate for a restaurant with two locations that are generally pretty crowded especially for their weekend Tex-Mex brunch. What do you think about Lobo?

dinner is awful, but their brunch--a legacy from the restaurant that existed before lobo (can anyone remember the name of that place?) is pretty good. can't beat the cheese jalepeno grits.

I've had brunch at both locations and the food was fine. Haven't had dinner at either, so I'll abstain on this one.

powdered margarita mix. end of story.
I really wanna say the place was called Halcyon before, but maybe i'm confusing it with the old place on smith where amazon cafe is now. They did have a great brunch!
SnarkSlope wrote a review on October 17, 2008 12:42 PM
Brunch is still decent, but for some reason their dinner fare seems to have gone drastically downhill since they opened. Also, the last time I was there for dinner, they were having a rather unfortunate karaoke night and the music was ridiculously loud.

^^^ I speak only for the 5th Ave location, as I have not been to the one on Court Street.

I made the mistake of eating here once. Next time, I'll just microwave the Old El Paso entree myself.

My girlfriend loves the CH Lobo. She says their guac is the best around.
I'm not big on Mexican food, so I usually get the americanized stuff, like a burger or "buffalo" something or other... it's always been pretty good.
I hate that they are cash only, though. That's probably my only complaint about the joint.

Quite possibly the worst Mexican food I have had, including Taco Bell. I will say the service was pleasant and fast.

It was called Harvest before, I think it's the same owner now, and I know this because I ate sunday brunch at the bar regularly before Better Half appeared in my life. I think the food is pretty good. I like the fajita's. I'm not a big drinker, so I have no idea about the margarita's. I still like brunch there from time to time, in the garden is great! Service can be spotty, due to staffing issues, from time to time.

Anyone live here long enough to remember Almotaser (Middle Eastern), the place that was there way before harvest?
Lobo-Drinks are great, I have never had a problem with the food, Brunch seems the way to go

If you are up for some mediocre bland greasy tex mex chain restaurant quality food this place is for you. This place is so terrible that almost makes Pacifico's food look good (at least Pacifico has good cheap margaritas so you end up being too drunk to taste anything by the time your food comes). Never tried the brunch.
I had given up on Mexican in this hood until I recently discovered Viva in Red Hook which is really surprising good.

I've had lunch and brunch at the 5th ave spot ... serviceable if unspectacular food. The service seemed a little iffy both times. The ambience is nothing worth writing home about. I don't think I'll be back, given that I live closer to Miracle Grill, which is basically the same restaurant, only slightly better.

Lobo serves only two functions as far as I can tell. First, it provides decent margeritas. Second, I don't know where else I can get a bowl of melted cheese to eat with chips.
ms_boerum wrote a review on October 17, 2008 1:53 PM
ah, yes, harvest. thanks, cobblehiller-- that was going to bug me. its sad, because i recall harvest having amazing mac&cheese and would actually go there for dinner. transitioning it to lobo was an odd move.

I just moved this summer to Boerum Hill and realized there is no good mexican in the area. Lobos drinks are great but food is just ok nothing special. Pacifico is just dirty and suspect inside. They need a place like ALMA in the area. I do like the drinks at LOBO and chips/salsa/guac but food is just blah... The area needs a fun solid mexican place. Like Canyon Road or Florencia 13. Good chill mexican...
boroughbred wrote a review on October 17, 2008 2:42 PM
Just ate there with my husband and it was easily the worst mexican food ever. Fresco Tortilla is gourmet fare compared to Lobos. In fact the discussion while waiting to use the bathroom was "How can a restaurant with food this bad be so full?" My waiter, while extremely attentive, seemed to know nothing about the menu. That said it is a comfortable space, and in the summer it has a nice garden. The margaritas are spectacular.

We went here recently and the salsa was delicious.
I had the fish tacos- the filling was great, but they came in flour tortillas instead of corn. This is an unfortunate trend I've found in nyc Mexican places. Having lived in California, I don't think to ask.
The waiter was kind of snotty, inmho. He seemed to fawn all over tables where people were drinking, but gave us the cold shoulder when we ordered sodas. When we were ready for the check, it was impossible to get anyone's attention, though there were plenty of people working there.
Don't think I'd go back. Seems like a "regulars" drinking establishment.

Agree Lobo and Pacifico are both crummy. The lack of good, no-frills Mexican in the area is vexing. So, Viva in Red Hook. Anywhere else that isn't too much of a hike? (I get a nosebleed above Chambers Street.) Many thanks!

Clean places are for elderly homos. There's an awesome taco place / mexican bodega on Atlantic and Hoyt. Amazing chorizo. It's a little dirty though so don't wear your white satin evening gloves.
But yes lobo food is shit. Drinks decent, nice outdoor area on the court street one. Service always friendly. Food still shit.

The food is not great but I must say they make one of the best margaritas around and only use fresh juices (at least at the Court Street location). Between those and the bottomless, free and delicious chips and salsa, I've lost more weekend afternoons to Lobo than I'd care to admit.

As a Texas expat, Lobo used to scratch the itch for Tex-Mex fare which is sadly m.i.a. in NYC.
Unfortunately I'm sorry to say that the food at Lobo has gone from merely decent to barely passable and all trace of spice has vanished.
For the record, I also think a dinner entree that has been re-heated in the microwave should cost a lot less than what Lobo charges.

I want the lesbian coffee shop that used to be here come back. Nothing like a cup of tea and a room full of lesbians. Yum.

Ah, Almontaser...I loved it! The most wonderful mud-thick-cardamom-spiced coffee! My family ate there on many many birthdays, and random friday nights. Nasser was always great and came over to chat with us. The waiters were the nicest guys, would stop me on the street to ask after my parents.
Thank you for remembering it Lifer!

Cobble Hill for life, 'Hiller. You know how they say "Bed Stuy do or die",.. I say "Cobble Hill, I live there still"..

Billiamsburg's comments were rude and crude, but he is right on one point: those hankering for very good and authentic Mexican food need to go to Fast-n-Fresh Deli, an extremely unlikely looking place on Hoyt Street between Atlantic and State. (Most people get it to go, but there's a nice garden in the back.) The same people should cross the street to avoid even passing by Lobo. I met the owner a few years ago, and he claimed to be from Austin. Well, he should know better or at least better educate his kitchen staff. Terrible, terrible food.

Billiamsburg's comments were rude, crude, and spot on. Clean is for quitters. I like rolling the dice a bit.
Great margarita's, ok food, but good margaritas. And the margaritas are good. Is there an echo in here?
Funnily enough, I am literally walking out of my apt for one of the heretofore mentioned margaritas right frakkin now.
Also, stay away from anything with the steak in it, it's usually a bit....rancid? Chicken dishes are good, and the mole sauce is pretty good too.
And don't get me talking about the margaritas.....

I'm a big fan of Lobo and love the margaritas. They are fresh juice, not powdered as one poster stated. Try the buffalo chicken quesadilla and the burgers are quite good. Also the ancho chile skirt steak.

Yeah, the food is terrible, but the margaritas and cheese dip are good. Too bad they can't get it together to provide some decent Tex-Mex
Cbassnyerface wrote a review on October 22, 2008 3:50 PM
Delicious spicy salsa (free = even more authentic), plus the cheese enchiladas, queso, guac and fajitas all have the taste I miss from texmex in my hometown Houston.

Some of the reviews here verge on the hateful. I can't understand such direct and flagrant hostility unless there's some personal motive. Reviewers, did you used to date one of the waitrons and are you now a bitter, spurned critic?
My wife and kids took me here recently for my birthday. We've been here before, always safe with my 10-year old daughter who refers to herself by the name "Cheese" as the quesadillas are really yummy. The margaritas are indeed consistently wonderful, just the right balance of sweet and tart. The wait staff is sufficiently haughty yet pleasant. My pork burrito was absolutely delicious. The only negative this evening was being refused a table by the windows and being exiled near the staircase and wait-station because they had a reservation for a party up front, but the party had still not arrived when we finished our meal. Like I said, a bit haughty, but pleasant.
Bottom line, for a good meal in a nice setting with terrific drinks, you can't miss at Lobo.

This place is overpriced and just plain awful. Bland, greasy, and just generally vile. We went here once and swore never to go back. Also, the "champagne" they use is Andre sparkling wine... we used to drink that stuff when I was in high school cause it was only $3 and tasted like juice. Really bad juice. Oh, and, a bird crapped on my boyfriend while we sat waiting for the check on the back patio. That was the, um, topper.
