"As a seafaring man comes into dock, he longs, of course, for salmon burgers, drag karaoke and nautical memorabilia. And he’ll find them all at Hope & Anchor on Red Hook’s nascent restaurant row," says Time Out New York.

At heart, Hope & Anchor is a neighborhood diner that serves eggs all day, but that's not all they've got on the menu: "Sandwiches, burgers and salads, like the lemon-dressed cobb, are classic successes. Entrees are more ambitious: Crackly skinned, herb-roasted chicken atop chunky mashed potatoes and greens cries for gravy, but beautifully grilled pork loin is sublime," says Citysearch's Dana Bowen. Chowhound juliecraftordie says Hope & Anchor is worth traveling to on weekend mornings: "Affordable, and they have a special brunch menu each week. The atmosphere is great, coffee is great. We come all the way from Northern Queens when we want a good Brooklyn breakfast!"

And we have to agree with Yelper Christopher K., who writes, "Not much to say other than, goddamn that roast pork hoagie with fried mozzarella and hot cherry peppers was sooooo good." What's your take on this place?

I went to H&A for brunch one Sunday late morning and it was awful. We waited for almost a half an hour for a table. When we sat down we waited for almost another twenty minutes before anyone came over to take our order and wasn't even offered coffee during that time. There were two empty tables next to us so we couldn't figure out why we had to wait so long. The place wasn't exactly packed. The coffee, when I finally got it, tasted like it had been sitting in the pot overnight. The service was indifferent at best, bordering on rude. When I finally got someone's attention after sitting at our table waiting to order the person seemed annoyed that I was bothering him. Will never go back. I don't understand how these places survive.

I make it a point to go to Hope and Anchor when I'm in the Hook. I love their brunch and, yes, the place gets packed but if you go before 11:30 you usually gets seated right away.

I've been going to Hope & Anchor since I joined BWAC a few years ago and like it very much. Not all menu items are winners, but what's good is very good indeed. FWIW, I've never had a problem with their service.

That being said, my wife doesn't share my enthusiasm for this place.

Went once and ordered a burger. Their french fries were like the kind found at a McDonald's - thin, fake yellow, frozen variety. To me that is a major no-no and have only returned to drink after hours. I find their beer bottle selection pretty decent.

Hope and Anchor is a winner in my book. The food is excellent and the service is respectable (unless really packed).. Definitely one of my favorite spots for brunch

I agree. The brunch is awesome and the lunch and dinner options are great too.. I stop by H&A everytime I'm in the 'hood to go to Fairway

H&A is what it is: a hip, slightly upscale local diner. The burgers are great. The breakfast is great. Coffee is good and strong. And the Mac Cheese fritters are hands down my greatest guilty pleasure of all time. But the service is spotty, depending on when you go and which staff is there. (Sometimes it's attentive, sometimes it's atrocious.) They desperately need a good floor manager. I'm glad it's there, but there's definitely room for improvement. In terms of it being a destination spot, it is for the Karaoke, but I wouldn't say to make a special journey for the food.

Best fish tacos ever. Great pork burger. Love the banana cream pie - and pretty much all of the desserts. Never had any problem with the service or the coffee. Always worth the trip

I was a loyal patron when it first opened, but this place has really gone down hill. On a good day the food is mediocre. They don't even make good oatmeal anymore. Oatmeal!

A hoagie? Yes it is almost as west as Brooklyn gets but please, we're in Brooklyn, not Manayunk. It's a hero or a sandwich.
FYI food is OK, but for the Hook, it's superior.

I had a horrible chicken pot pie there, so I appreciate food suggestions from all of you. I go there for the really enjoyable karoake, but now I just stick to burgers.

hoagie, hero, sub, whatever - the "roast pork hoagie" here is a fantastic sandwich, totally worth the trip.

A fantastic diner. The best lamb burger in town. Great meatloaf. PLUS - friendliest karaoke room I've ever sang in. A winner all around.
