Geido

What draws so many regular customers to this neighborhood Japanese joint is its affordable sushi and it's welcoming spirit: "Maybe it's the wonderfully friendly waitresses that welcome you and bid you goodnight one by one or the graffiti and marker covered walls showing the history of the place," says AlwaysEating.
"The most coveted seats in the house are at the sushi bar, where diners can view the handiwork of owner Osamu Koyama, who assembles his pieces and rolls with quick fluidity and dramatic flourish. Though the day's catches are rarely unusual, Koyama’s success lies in his assuredly fresh fish, served in large portions at reasonable rates (think Blue Ribbon quality at 'blue plate' prices)," says New York magazine's T Sahara Meer.
But Chowhound lambretta76 doesn't go to Geido for the sushi menu: "I enjoy Geido for soups, okonomiyaki (but get the sauce on the side), katsu, and things of that nature, but rarely order sushi from them anymore. It's not bad, it's just not as good as I can get elsewhere." What's your take?

i enjoy there soup as well and the sushi is not bad at all.
however it always seems to be packed now and I end up going to the the place further down flatbush by the wing place or Taro.
not a bad thing for them at all tho.

Exactly. Friendly service, fun ambience, fantastic prices ... but the fish is not up to par with, for example, Oshima on 7th ave. Course, it's very easy to blow $100 for two people at Oshima, and you'd have to be trying pretty hard to manage that at Geido.
Overall, it's an enjoyable alternative to the expensive sushi joints, from time to time.

It's very, very bright- cafeteria bright. This always made my dad happy. I would prefer a slightly dimmer restaurant.
Agree with the comments about the cooked dishes being the star here-

One of my favorite places. The food is really good and reasonable. The staff is fantastic. Stick around after hours when the karaoke machine gets busted out and soju starts flowing...

I always tell folks in the area that if they're looking for sushi or sashimi that they should head to Taro... for great rolls and other dishes, head to Geido.

This place is a neighborhood institution for a reason. Try the sushi cocktail!

For the price, the sushi is excellent. Unfortunately it's not a place I visit anymore as the tables are jammed so close together and it's not at all kid/stroller friendly.

Good sushi. Crowded, over-bright, noisy space with tables that are way too close together. Service is understaffed, so it can take awhile to get your food, but you can tell the waiters are working as fast as they can.
Given the numerous local alternatives for quality sushi that isn't in a 'Port Authority' style environment, skip this place and look elsewhere.

why aren't there ever any reviews of Wburg restaurants? that's where the really interesting ones are.

great food, great prices. good service. not so great ambiance... brooklyn bohemian. i must admit the tempura, fish collars, udon, and sushi (eel, octopus, salmon, and fatty tuna) are fantastic.

Just to point out the obvious, but you can't have great or even good sushi for this price, rest of the menu notwithstanding. Good enough for the price? Perhaps. But not good. And definitely not great.

Although the non-sushi food was good, I stopped going to Geido because the service was so awful. Not just incompetant, but downright rude. If you're a regular you don't have that problem--if you're not, just hope there aren't many "regulars" there that night or you'll have a hard time getting service (or a seat).
Taro is far superior for sushi, and Gen on Washington much better for other Japanese food.
