In a thread about good eats near the Brooklyn Bridge, Chowhound cmoore618 recommends Five Front: "Expect well prepared comfort food (think crab cakes, PEI mussels, goat cheese gnocchi) in a lovely setting." The Village Voice digs this place, too: "The lush and perfectly dressed salads—one featuring endive, baby arugula, walnuts, red grapes, and blue cheese—impressed us, but one of the highlights of the evening was the chocolate cake served with mint chocolate chip ice cream."

And Gothamist recommends it as a great spot to grab a cocktail: "Buy a drink and walk back through the dining room and out into the large back patio. There beneath a canopy of trees, strung up lights, and the looming Brooklyn Bridge, is a little lounge. Sit in the low lying chairs, clink glasses, and enjoy the view." How would you rate this place?

The food is reliably good -- sometimes even VERY good. But the service? We have had more bad service there than any restaurant that is still in business. Seems to be better for now but...

I like the intimate garden in the back. The food is nothing fabulous but its worth checking out.

Great place to have an after work cocktail, food is very hit and miss, I general have been there during the week and the service has been fine (never crowded).

Years ago this was one of my favorite Brooklyn restaurants. Went back a few weeks ago for the first time in probably 2 years and we found it had fallen WAY off. Not sure if this was an off night for them or not so I didn't rate the place. I don't think we'll be going back.

I used to live across the street from Five Front and it became one of my favorite haunts. The food is very good - not mind blowing, but in my opinion the best in DUMBO (neck and neck with Hecho, but hard to compare as they are so different). The ambiance is great - very warm and cozy, and the back garden is spectacular, especially on a warm night. The service, to me, is extremely friendly. So much so that it was a main factor in my decision to host my wife's 40th there a few months back. The owner and his wife could not have been nicer or more accomodating, and they went way over the top to make sure everyone had a good time.

I highly recommend giving them a try.

Have to agree with BH76 about the service. A former boss who lived at One Main hosted a company party there a couple of years back. The food was fine, but the service - particularly for a large group - was remarkably blase and inattentive. They really pissed off my boss and definitely lost future business that evening.

Love, love, love the back garden. One of my favorite garden restaurants in Brooklyn

OK though overpriced food, horrible service. Not in a mean-spirited or deliberately negligent way, but consistently clueless and distracted. My wife and I gave up on this place after really trying to like it.

inconsistent is right. The service has been good for me, I generally eat at the bar when my family is out of town and you will always get pretty good service from a bartender. When the food is on, it is awesome - the burgers and hangar steak are very good. But "medium" is just a suggestion resulting in anything from rare to well-done (no kidding!). My guess is the kitchen is small and gets overwhelmed when the place is busy.

for a few bucks more I would walk up a few blocks over to hicks street and check out Jack the Horse taven in Brooklyn heights. The prices are a bit higher (avg entree is probably $25 vs. $17 for 5 front) but if you are spending 17 bucks for a plate of food it does not seem to me you are bargain hunting.

I went there over a year ago. The food was not memorable in any way. Neither the service. The location, however, is great! An upscale restaurant in DUMBO, a few notches down from The River Cafe, is refreshing.
