DUB Pies

New York magazine says that "New Zealander Gareth Hughes started Down Under Bakery in 2003 after contemplating New York’s culinary landscape while devouring a hand-held pocket food back home. 'The meat pie is as essential to Kiwis as pizza is to New Yorkers,' says Hughes."
He now runs two DUB Pie shops the original Columbia Street location serves smoothies in addition to the regular menu and offers more seating than their Windsor Terrace spot. Time Out New York's Amy Sirot recommends picking up a few pies in insulated take-out bags especially if you've got kids to feed: "My picky four-year-old gave his 'steak mince' (ground beef) pie a suspicious look, turned it over a few times, then dug in with a gusto usually reserved for Halloween candy."
Chowhound Puppimus is a fan of DUB Pies but is upset about their recent price increase: "I know, I know, times are tough and everything is going up. But I'm afraid these latest price hikes at DUB Pies -- 25 to 50 cents per pie -- have made me feel like they're not worth it anymore... at $5-5.50 each, it's just so much cheaper to make a snack at home than to have a DUB Pie. A very sad turn of events." What do you think about DUB Pies?

i love DUB - as an australian expat, i can say the pies are objectively great, there is a great range, and lets not forget the wonderful coffee that they have at both locations as well. And even at $5.50 a pop, it's great having a few in the freezer for Sunday nights.

I really like Dub pies but I don't get them very often 'cause they just are not a good value. I used to buy jamaican meat patties on Flatbush for $2 a pop. Or for the same price as one Dub pie I can get two great slices of Pizza around the corner. I think these pies would be flying off the shelf if they were half the price but perhaps even if they doubled their business at half the price it just wouldn't work. Or make the pies larger so that one is enough for dinner. I dunno, maybe I just don't understand the cost of rent and ingredients these days.

I've entered the one on WT a coupla times to see if I was missing something. All I see is a few tiny pies around. Nothing that made me hungry looking at it. I don't get it.

The pies are great, but I have them as a very rare treat. If they were a couple of bucks cheaper, I'd be eating them every other day. Now, it's maybe every other week for a splurge.

I think they are great. Obviously it would be better if they were cheaper, but it's new york. As it is, they have to sell a lot of pies to make their rent.
I wish I lived closer.
