Chez Oskar

"Chez Oskar, one of the older establishments in Fort Greene, is a good place to stop by for a casual bite, though the food isn't always consistent," writes Marcel Reynolds for New York magazine. "The menu is steeped in Bistro Basics 101, with lunch options like mussels in white wine... Dinner highlights the restaurant's French pedigree with options like escargot, nicoise salad, and traditional burgers and steak," says Citysearch's Liz Zack.
The New York Times adds, "This pretty bistro in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, is overflowing with romantic allure, but the cooking is barely competent, and even standards like roast chicken and grilled fish are disappointing." But Brooklyn blogger ultraclay writes: "I've been going to Chez Oskar for years. The service is lacking more often than not, but I keep going back for 2 reasons: the fact that they don't care if you linger for hours and the Spicy Lamb Burger. It's always great. juicy, piquant and perfectly complemented by a thick pat of goat cheese." What's your take on this place?

As for whether or not they care if you linger, it depends on your server. I have had horrendous service more than once at Chez Oskar. On the other hand, the food is reasonable and usually delicious.

I did linger for hours waiting for my food, so long that I don't remember what is tasted like.

Lamb burger is great;
Freach toast even better

I had a good omelette for brunch there a couple of years ago. It was just right and fairly priced for what it was.

I had a slammin' fish dish there. Don't remember what it was called but I yearn to go back. Been there twice over eight years or so. Both times were good experiences.

Stopped in the place last weekend for the first time for dessert...great chocolate cake! Place was packed, very nice ambience. Now on my list of places to go for dinner sometime soon.

My husband and I love Chez Oskar. Good food, good drinks and good service. It's one of our favorites.

I've been eating at this place since I moved into the neighborhood nine years ago. It's simple traditional french bistro food. Personally, I don't go for the food though- more for the ambiance both inside and out. They also have really great live music during the week. It's a good neighborhood staple.

I love Chez Oskar, esp. Wednesday evenings for Jazz - good food, great brunch and friendly staff.

We have found Chez Oscar to be reliably good over the years. Sometimes they get busy, but we try to time it to avoid the rush.

Food can be hit & miss, but they've been having live bluegrass (Blue Vipers of Brooklyn)on Mondays which was a great way to kick off the week. For a better meal, try the recently opened Kif right up the street -- they've got it going on, both in the kitchen and in the Moroccan decorated back yard.

I have tried this place 2 times, once for brunch, and once for dinner. Both times the service was ridiculously slow... not nice and leisurely slow, but I'm about to die where is my food slow. I can't bring myself to go back since there are so many other great places to eat in the neighborhood.
