Sugarcane

"Tired of shabby roti joints, Trinidadian expat Charmaine Gumbs left her career as a law-firm account supervisor to open Sugarcane, an upscale pan-Caribbean restaurant of her own... rotis—Trinidad's most renowned culinary contribution and the best example of the island's considerable East Indian influence—finally get the stylish setting Gumbs always thought they deserved," write New York magazine's Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld.
"The stainless-steel bar glints in the wall mirrors, and a bamboo floor the color of sand makes the space feel larger than it is. Settle into a booth prettified by tall vases of banana leaves and prepare to seriously stuff yourself," says Time Out New York. "The vibrant menu begs diners to try something new. Sure, they've got great jerk chicken, but be adventurous and order a filet of shark sandwich, oxtail, West Indian curry, or Trinidadian stewed chicken with rum and Spanish thyme," suggests Citysearch's Lisa Maria Rovito.
Chowhound Lambretta76 says that "they often have live music, including soca and steel drums," but some fellow 'Hounds complain about the volume. What are your thoughts on Sugarcane?

What, what, what? Those prices would command valet parking and cloth napkin service, but wedged in between restaurant suppliers and auto glass garages on the gritty sidewalks of Atlantic Ave. cause me to pause.
Roti can be had for between $5-$8 at most local spots, $12-$15 is not even close. $10 drinks are a tough sell in Manhattan, but on Atlantic Ave. in Prospect Heights will not last.

I meant Flatbush Ave.

I wish her the best, and will have to visit. The food sounds great. Great foods in all cuisines can usually be found cheaper, and maybe even better, somewhere else. That doesn't mean she shouldn't try. Ambiance costs money.

I'm unclear why a comment is warranted if you haven't actually visited the restaurant.
I've been many times. Sugarcane's food is VERY tasty. Rich flavors, lots of ginger and pepper, etc. Very fresh fish and tender stewed meats. My friend who is from Trinidad (who is very choosy about what she eats) goes there for special occasions -- she swears by it. The atmosphere is definitely more upscale than average (thus, the prices), but worth it, in my opinion.

Food is good. Music is LOUD. Rumor has it that Sugarcane may have to relocate. It is the same situation as its former neighbor, Royal Video.

"wedged in between restaurant suppliers and auto glass garages"
It's actually located between a supplier of prosthetic devices and a wine shop. But hey, why let facts get in the way of a good post?

i looked at the menu. ALL MEAT. no love for the neighborhood vegetarians.

you're seriously giving the food a rating of 1 because the menu isn't veggie-friendly? i guess i should give bad reviews to vegetarian and vegan restaurants, then.

i walk by this place every day and its packed.
more packed than anywhere else on the entire stretch of flatbush north of GAP.
never eaten there tho.

Yeah, I often walk past as well, and from 4pm onward it is always packed. They must be pulling in a lot more $/day/sqft than Royal Video. And if they're successfully charging those prices, it looks like they're doing a good thing and doing well. Unless the rent is beyond absurd, it seems like they should/could afford to stay.

looks and feels more like a bar than a restaurant. i want to hear myself in a restaurant. Pass.

Rocky 4 might want to look again, there is plenty of veggie food on the menu. Looks pricey, but yummy, I may try it.

Sugarcane is not your average Caribbean food. It's not just a fancy space with West Indian take-out quality food. The ingredients are fresh and the chef is creative. There are dishes that are traditional but there are also new takes on the old recipes. The presentation is beautiful. They also have a nice drink menu with drinks like a sorrel mohito and others made with island flavor. The crowd is West Indian. I have often wondered why it doesn't get more of a mix of people.
I want to second the person above. My Trini friends go here for a nice dinner out- birthdays, etc.

I wish St. Mark's Bistro, which I think was at this location before, never closed.

food's gone from very bad to worse over the years. Service went downhill too. They gave my reservation to another party..not that we were late..another party walked in off the street prior to our arrival and they gave them our table. That plus the quality of the food and the service..never went back..a shame because it was a fav. THe music does tend to be too loud

oops..that should have been very good to worse
