Sette Enoteca e Cucina

"The inside is pleasant, a vaguely rustic dining room with 20-foot ceilings... The acoustics are deafening, however—reason enough to request a table in the large, plant-filled patio... It’s a great perch for sampling a few bottles of wine from Sette’s reasonably priced all-Italian list," says Time Out New York.
"In terms of the half-dozen pasta dishes on Sette's menu, the ratio of portion to price was generous and commendable. These dishes were easily large enough to be main courses, and only one of them, fresh pappardelle with oxtail and pecorino, cost more than $15," writes Frank Bruni in his 2005 review for the New York Times. The affordability theme continues Chowhound baileybird had her 65-guest budget wedding there and said that "The food was excellent, the staff was wonderful and everyone had a great time."
However, fellow 'Hound parkslopemamma writes that Sette's lunch has gone "way downhill," and bigmackdaddy and Tbird both agree that "Sette sucks." And in back in May, Grub Street published an unconfirmed rumor that Sette was up for sale. What are your thoughts on this place?

This is not my favorite restaurant in the area by any means, but the pastas are generally reliable and don't break the bank.

So much for my suggestion to mix it up by featuring establishments not located on 5th Ave/7th Ave/Smith St. This feature should be renamed the Park Slope / BoCoCa / Williamsburg Restaurant of the Day.

I've eaten there a couple times - although not since 2006.
Pretty much ever time I went, I felt the food was mediocre and the service almost insulting. Nice location and decor. The place survives only because some people who live by the park are too lazy to walk down to Fifth Avenue.

I've only been here for brunch, so I can't vouch for dinner. The food seems to have gone downhill from the first few times I went. Service has always been fine. It's on my "may or may not go back" list.

I'm telling you, you want delicious Italian at decent prices, go to newly opened Scalino on 7th Ave and 10th street. BYOB.
It's excellent.

Scalino is great!
As for Sette, it is nothing special. My favorite thing is the live music, but other than that it is not that great.

Biff Champion: I just got back to my desk after the long weekend, and I just saw your suggestion from Friday and your remark from earlier today. I absolutely have covered restaurants that aren't located on 5th Ave/7th Ave/Smith Street (Alma, Christie's Jamaican Patties, the Smoke Joint, Habana Outpost, Lucali, Diner, Dressler, and DuMont, to name a few) and there will be more of them in the future.

Biff don't get it here, like that guy who asked why did he rob banks and answered cuz that's where the money is? 5th / 7th / Smith, that's where the restaurants are!

Wait a minute here! did Peter Lugers finally score better than another restaurant in the Brownstoner Restaurant of The Day poll? How can this be???!?
Biff Champion wrote a review on September 3, 2008 8:12 AM
denton, do you really think there has been a proportionate coverage of restaurants across all the Brooklyn nabes? If so, you must think that 50% or so of all restaurants are on 5th/7th/Smith. Unlike you, some of us would like to learn about other areas once in awhile.
Kara, thanks for your sincere response and I look forward to seeing some more diversity here. I'm not a hater - I actually love PS and BoCoCa (I hate that nickname!) - I just thought it was odd right after a few of us complained Friday, the very next restaurant featured here was yet again in PS.

When Sette first opened, its chef was a woman who had excellent credentials and who created a pleasant, if not innovative, rustic Italian menu. Since she left, the restaurant has, indeed, gone downhill. There are a dozen better places for Italian in the neighborhood for the same price. The shakedown in Park Slope restaurants has just begun: how can one expect the number of restaurants (and the redundancy of restaurants) in the area to continue to thrive?
