Junior's

"The food classic New York deli, stick-to-your-ribs fare like matzo ball soup and giant 10-ounce burgers and fries is perfectly passable, but certainly nothing special. Where Junior’s has the competition beat is attitude. That 'We were here then, we’re here now, and we’re not going anywhere soon' swagger is what keeps the tourists and locals coming back for more," says New York magazine's Amelie Gillette.
The big draw is, of course, their self-proclaimed "most fabulous cheesecake," but now that Junior's has two locations in Manhattan, fewer people are traveling to Brooklyn to get it. (And soon Delta Airlines will be serving $5 individual cheesecakes on "select transcontinental flights" to and from JFK.)
But some Chowhounds say that the food at Junior's has gone downhill over the years. "The barbecue used to be really good there, as did the matzoh ball soup. Not anymore... the chocolate layer cake, which used to be a light fluffy cake with chocolate buttercream frosting, is a joke now," says hmacleish. And fellow 'Hound Tay says the cheesecake is "so cloyingly sweet that it's basically inedible. Better cheesecake is to be found at pretty much any neighborhood pastry shop/bakery." What do you think about Junior's?

Junior's is Junior's. Gotta love it!

cheesecake sucks, but it's a fun place to take out of towners, especially sunday after church lets out and all the fabulous old black ladies in their crazy hats are eating...

I don't like their cheesecake, but the strawberry shortcake and lemon meringue pie are very good. When we eat there (rather than just pick up some desserts to take home) we always feel like we are seriously ripped off. The food is not that good and way overpriced. I think last time I had a $12 turkey reuben (and that doesn't include fries) that was just so-so.

I wanted to like this place but, outside of the egg cream, I didn't enjoy any of the food. Then again, I probably shouldn't have expected veg-friendliness. I do always feel cheered up when cruising by their old-school blinky sign after working late.

No real Brooklynite would ever speak ill of Juniors regardless of it's quality. The place is iconic Brooklyn.

Overpriced! Cause of obesity. Who can eat a meal worth 12 bucks? No wonder you walk out of there cowfaced.

I'm with you, SBP. Quite frankly, I don't even see the point in rating it, any more than I would bother to rate the Carnegie Deli, Sammy's or Primourskie's. It's a Brooklyn institution, and if it ever caught fire again, I'm sure the old ladies would be out there with buckets of water just like last time (or is that an exaggerated Brooklyn legend).
I don't go to Juniors, but when I want to make cheesecake, I follow the Juniors' recipe (careful, there are phonies online, the real deal has a light spongecake bottom layer, no crumbs). Way too much sugar to meet the refined tastebuds of Brownstone Brooklyn's foodies, but its the real deal and I swear by it. Unlike many of the upscale neighborhood joints rated in this feature, no one on this site is going to read this space to decide whether to go to Juniors. You either bring your out of town guests there or you don't.

It's a glorified deli/grill in a city full of deli/grills, which is part of what makes it great.

The last time, I was at juniors was about a year ago, my guests from the south insisted on going. I sat there, mentally tortured knowing I can be having a better meal elsewhere. I refused to get dessert. It is sub-par.
Juniors cheesecake tastes like you're eating a block of cream cheese.
Eileen's Cheesecake is the best in NYC.

Double parking in front of Juniors is constant, no tickets are ever given, makes you wonder if cops are getting free cheescake

Agreed as to Strawberry Short Cake. Ordered one for a party once - big enough 25 people or so. Really excellent. The berries and cream were all super fresh. As for their other food, well it's not like anyone goes there for the food right?

I disagree with "slopefarm": There is a reason to rate this place -- namely, to warn people away. Though your cousins from Poughkeepsie may beg to go, fight that urge. I literally wwalked away from my meal. Times were tight, but I would rather go hungry than force down heavy, burnt, crappy meal I ordered. Not even on a novelty level, folks. Stay away!

FYI, my ratings didn't take with my review above, so I'm re-posting to add my scores.

the cheesecake is amazing. i love it there and i do my best to replicate it at home. the rest of the food is alright and i like the atmosphere.

the notion that "iconic" restaurants are entitled to some sort of tenure that insulates their food from criticism is ridiculous.
bmfesq wrote a review on September 19, 2008 2:52 PM
Their claim to fame is cheesecake, granted it is good, but as a destiny restaurant, people are in for a shock. It's a huge diner, nothing more, hundreds of items and all done okay, but way overpriced!
Stick to takeout for desserts.

As someone who grew up here, I have great fondness for Juniors. Its nostalgic for the locals who went there as kids. Sometimes that takes precedence to us over what a foodie might think of the food. The pickled beets, the huge amounts of bread, they provide children crayons to draw with, and there's never a wait for a table. I have never myself had a bad meal there, maybe its a matter of ordering the right things (fried chicken great, burgers great, brunch great, chocolate cheesecake amazing). Again, this has nothing to do with a rating system, but may shed more light on why Locals value it more than transplants, its been here forever, and reminds us of when we were younger. I for one think waiting an hour for a table anywhere is ridiculous no matter how good the food, just my opinion.

I think the cheesecake is over rated. The rest of the food is sub par, and totally overpriced.

Agree the place is way overpriced. And I have occassionally had some icky food at Junior's - once the vegetable that came with my meal was broccoli topped with cheez whiz, no joke. However, I think the bakery has some bright spots - for example they make a cake that is carrot cake layered with cheesecake, very tall (something like 6 layers) and it's DE-LICIOUS.

There are much better diners in Brooklyn at half the price.

Eating the cheesecake since birth must blur objectivity: I think that you people blaspheming the cheesecake are just nuts. As for the food, it's heart attack-inducing slop - just the way I like it. Sure it's overpriced, but the place is just cool. And the waiters are usually great.
