"The soothing, leafy backyard garden and main dining room with white-washed brick walls provide the perfect backdrop for this unpretentious addition to the neighborhood," writes Citysearch's Cadien Clark. "Ici has the open-all-day, Everyman appeal of Balthazar and the streamlined style of Bouley... The small dinner menu is gently priced to turn first-timers into regulars, and more seasonal than the typically formulaic New York French bistro," write New York magazine's Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld.

The Village Voice says, "The braised beef short ribs are a paragon of their type, while the crisp-skinned Spanish mackerel arrives washed in red waves of sour kimchi." Over brunch, Food in Mouth photographed some luscious-looking shirred eggs and describes the dish with gusto: "It is like Christmas on a plate, and as a person who does not celebrate xmas, I will take this instead."

Although one Chowhound started a thread about a bad experience at iCi during restaurant week, a few other 'Hounds stood up to defend its honor. " Bobjbkln says, "In general I find it one of the best restaurants in its class. I'd suggest you try it again." How would you rate this place?

I love iCi. Go to brunch frequently and dinner occasionally and have never had a bad meal. I particularly like the selection of organic wines. Delish!

we were excited to try ici given the good reviews and buzz. but it was a big let-down. despite having a reservation, we had to wait around 20-30 minutes for a table, and even then we only got seated because we reminded the hostess we were waiting. the food was generally solid but didn't reflect the level of creativity and preparation you'd expect for such a high price. scallops were a little too rubbery, salad was basically just a pile of greens.

give me the choice of "ici" and i will take "la bas."

we were very underwhelmed - as well as disappointed, after hearing the hype - by our experience there. the service was pleasant but not elegant or "together." the food was decent, fresh and well-sourced but far from delicious or inventive. i don't want to be harsh, as it's nice to have a few more "grownup" restaurants around. and ici certainly is that - a good place to take the parents, maybe. but i am not a terrific cook and most of the dishes weren't markedly better or different than what i can prepare in my own kitchen. the cocktails and wines were just okay. the ambience is nice, but the entire package did not live up to ici's relatively ambitious price point. better can be found on smith street, on 5th avenue, and in prospect heights.

We had an excellent meal at Ici. The food was carefully prepared and so flavorful. French, but inspired from Asia and elsewhere. Waitstaff courteous. And the back garden cannot be beat in good weather.

Backyard garden is great, but everything else is a letdown. Particularly for the price. Because there seem to be a few people who are really into ici, I have tried it a few times, but I usually walk away disappointed.

i've only been here for brunch and always enjoy it. ingredients are good and fresh and the french toast might be the best i have had here. only one bad experience - three tables left at exactly the same time and subsequently, were sat at the same time. so the service and food timing was off. other than that, it remains a standard in our dining out options.

We had a group of 8 for a kid's graduation celebration brunch. The service was incredibly slow. The food is pretty good, but there is some disappointment involved in the menu descriptions versus what you receive on your plate and then the value. (Wish there were a value choice between About Right and Very Overpriced?)

I've had slightly better luck visting with fewer people in a group. It's been good for a coffee/drink and a few snacks. But I agree with cortnyc, it's a let down.

Service is just not great, they need to step it up more than a few notches. The wait staff/kitchen, while courteous, is a little too 'slacker' oriented and just plain slow. A dish of fruit that had been forgotten took more than 20 minutes to make it to the table. That's just silly. They need to bring it up a notch or three.

Garden is very nice.

Don't let the long wait fool you. The food is just okay for the prices and the service is terrible no matter when you go. We've went for brunch and dinner a couple times, just to give the place the benefit of the doubt. After our last so-so experience, we haven't been back. Try Bonita's brunch across the street, better food and better service.

I'm sorry to hear that others have had a bad experience at Ici. I live around the corner, and have eaten there many times. I think, hands down, it serves the best food in Fort Greene. Nothing else is even in the same league. The service is admittedly not perfect, but I've never had a serious complaint. The dinner menu is fairly small, but everything on it is a winner. and their breakfast is amazing. I always tell people to try it, and I've yet to hear any reviews as poor as the ones in these comments.

After not having gone to Ici for over a year due to prior bad experiences, my husband and I decided to give it another shot a few months ago.

His fish special was $26 or $28 and not fresh at all; it shouldn't have been served. The rest of the meal was just okay. The server was nice but a bit slow.

We will not go there again.

iCi is one of the best options in the neighborhood. these guys were offering sustainable food wayyyyyy before it was trendy, they don't just talk the talk. the prices might be a bit high to make it your everyday choice, but it's a great place with terrific food. the tiny kitchen might have something to do with waits during busy times.

We LOVED this place when we first went about 5 years ago. We've been maybe 5 times and it has never been as good, at times quite poor. Sadly, this place is now an average restaurant. They do have a really good wine list though.

I have loved iCi since I moved to the neighborhood about 4 years ago. Although the menu has changed somewhat, I have always had a fantastic meal and I have found it a great place to take visiting friends because I know we will not be disappointed. Unfortunately, there are only a few restaurants in the neighborhood that can meet that qualification.

greenebee wrote a review on September 22, 2008 5:10 PM

I have eaten here 2 times, once for dinner and once for brunch at the request of a friend (I wouldn't have gone back after my dinner otherwise). The brunch was ok - but I think overpriced for what I got. The back yard seating is nice. The dinner was awful. It was under seasoned, and uninspired. There are so many better choices around. Also, I feel the dining room (inside seating) for some reason gets really loud.

I don't know, I do like this place but I never seem to come back even though I live so close. The food is pretty tasty but the service is very low energy and not particularly warm or 'happy to have you'.
I often bring Manhattan friends here at an entree to my hood b/c it is easy to get and the menu is nice. I just wish the staff was.
The garden is a delight!
I have only been for dinner once and it seems more $$ than it should be. More like west village prices.

I agree there needs to be something in between "about right" and very overpriced. I would describe ICI as 'a little much for what it is'

Dora Chica wrote a review on September 23, 2008 10:58 AM

This place is overpriced for what it is. And the biggest turn off is that the place has a snobby air, including the owner woman who stomps around the restaurant with a lack of grace that is painful to watch and hear.

miss priss wrote a review on September 23, 2008 11:30 AM

I've been many times, more than most restaurants, and I love it. I have to disagree about the owner - she is lovely and very welcoming anytime I've experienced her. I find the food delicious and their commitment to organic food and wine really wonderful. My favorites include the quinua, the grits, chicken paillard salad and the iced teas. they really are amazing, and i think naysayers may have just had a bad night. also, really yummy panna cotta for dessert!

I used to be a huge fan of Ici but it's really gone downhill in the past year or so. They are always out of the things I want, they seem incapable of poaching an egg (brunch) and the menu doesn't change often enough. It's a nice setting, a nice (although completely unresponsive) staff and a good idea in theory but it doesn't live up to it's reputation. The last three times I went there I promised myself I wouldn't go back. This time it's going to stick!
