Grimaldi's

Grimaldi's litany of rules no reservations, no slices, no delivery, and no credit cards don't discourage customers from forming long lines in front of this pizzeria every day. Citysearch's Dan McAlvanah describes the scene once you get inside: "Checkerboard-print tablecloths drape the tables, pictures of Pavarotti, Sinatra and Brando cover the walls and, nine times out of 10, it's either the voice of Old Blue Eyes or the Italian tenor that emanates from the jukebox."
In an old Slice review, Adam Kuban raves about Grimaldi's pizza: "The crust was pleasingly chewy and crisp, the cheese is probably the best-quality fresh mozzarella in the city, and the pepperoni was spicy and top-notch." That said, Kuban admits that "quality is inconsistent." Many Chowhounds feel that Grimaldi's has gone downhill over the years, and that you can get better pizza (and atmosphere) at Lucali in Carroll Gardens.
Bloghungry says, "To eat inside is to wait in an endless line to get yelled at by an old Italian man and pushed into whatever corner they can cram you into. Your best bet is to call in an order and take it back to your place or at the nearby pier." Do you think a Grimaldi's pizza is worth waiting for?

I've always found Tottono's far superior to Grimaldi's.

Grimaldi's is basically for tourists. I prefer Fascati's and any number of other pizzerias.

I've eaten at Grimaldi's once and haven't been back, which I guess kind of sums up my opinion. The pizza was fine, but you can find comparable pizza all over the city without standing in line for an hour, being treated like dirt by the guy managing said line, and being crammed in so tightly that it's hard to eat without elbowing fellow diners in the side.
I'm a fan of the pizza place on Vanderbilt in Prospect Heights ... can't recall the name right now, but every time I've gone it's been excellent.

Pizza is pretty good but not even close to good enough to be worth standing in line with a bunch of tourists for an hour ... plenty of other places to get pizza that is as good or better without all the hassle.

Good pizza, for sure, but I refuse to wait in those lines.

forget the lines people, order ahead over the phone and they will actually bring it out to your car if you roll up, or walk it down by the lighthouse and look at the skyline while you eat. been doing it this way for years.

Been there 3 years ago and never went back. Probably served great pizzas sometime in the past but now its infested with Brooklyn bridge tourists/visitors from Midwest somewhere with the endless long lines and cramped tables/seatings inside. When our standard pizza came out with "fresh" basils all burnt crisped, I knew the place seen better days and owner is just seeing the $$.

If you can get there at those rare times when there is not a line of tourists, the pizza is still good. It's not like when Patsy and Carol ran it, but I just hope they are enjoying their retirement.
And Totono's literally made me sick! UGH.

Grimaldi's is for tourists and transplants who have lived here fora couple years and take their friends there to impress them with how authentic it all is. Grimaldi's is better than pizza you can get in Indiana, San Francisco or Chicago, sure. But its heyday of being Brooklyn's best, or one of NYC's best is -over-.

Not usually a contrarian but Grimaldi's is way overrated. I wanted to like it -- no, after waiting in line for 45 minutes, I wanted to love it -- but it's just above average brick oven pizza. They do have a great location, and it's still probably the best food in Dumbo, though that may not a particularly high bar. No complaints about the prices, though.

Grimaldi's has seen better days, the crowds of obnoxious tourists sends me over the edge, (but the place is quiet pleasant for lunch).
The food is ok, there are better places if the lines are short its worth a stop in, but if the lines are long, there are better places.

As Edmund Hillary said about Everest, part of summitting is making it back down safely. Part of dining out is ambience - severely curttailed by long lines and many rules. I've eaten at DiFara's several times but the quality of the pizza suffers in totem due to the 1 1/2 hour wait (Friday night, celebrating a friend's move to the Midwood area).

bowl of dicks is correct- call ahead and eat somewhere else.
cwbuecheler - that place on Vanderbilt in Prospect Heights is Amorina; you're right, the food there is excellent.

If it weren't for the outrageous wait I would say it was a decently solid pizza joint. You are much better off hiking up Henry St to Fascati's. Fascati's is tastier, quicker, and friendlier (and they accept CC and deliver!).
On a side note, try and go to Grimaldi's around noon on a Monday after the tourist season and you won't wait much, if at all.
CGmodern wrote a review on September 8, 2008 2:12 PM
totally overrated! Amorina is fabulous! Def go there.
Let the sucker tourists have Grimaldi's.

A year ago I would have sung Grimaldi's praises, but my last few trips there have been disappointing. Food isn't as good as it used to be, and service has felt increasingly impersonal and rushed. Go oncee for the experience, but beyond that find a neighborhood pizza place.

I'll take Lombardi's.

Never been yelled at by anyone there
If I pass by and the line is ridiculous, I go elsewhere
I don't hold it's premium location against it.
A lot of people on this board bemoaning the non natives who eat there are non natives ...
bowl of dicks wrote a review on September 8, 2008 2:56 PM
sorry but fascati's is terrible! overly salty, greasy cheese. still in business only because there is no other cheap slice joint in the north hieghts (and proximity to the st. george dormitory). seriously.
tybur6 wrote a review on September 8, 2008 2:57 PM
I've never had an unpleasant experience there. Very good to great pizza and the service is pretty good.
I've never had the urge to wait in the line - maybe those peak periods aren't the time to go. Just don't go at 12-2 and 5-7. (But not everyone! If everyone shifts to the non-peak times, then the line will form when I want to visit... so most of you keep going at noon.)

Bowl of Dicks - Fascati is one of the best slice's in all of Brooklyn - your credibility is now and forever suspect.

I feel like it's trendy to hate on Grimaldi's. I've been eating there for years and I think it's still a solid pie (Tip: ask for it well done). I was there on a friday night a couple weeks ago with a party of 10. The wait was 35 minutes but we got out of there with 5 pies and 3 caraffe's of wine for $20 apiece! Delicious and a bargain.
Sure it's no DiFara, but that place takes me 45 minutes on the train + another 45 minutes to get a pie + another 45 minutes back. Sorry, but for something cheap in the hood it's not too shabby.

I am totally fed up with Grimaldi's. (no pun intended). Limited menu, pizza okay but not fabulous, horrible service, all cash, crowded -- what's to like about it anymore? There are so many more options why put up with them?

Most over-rated pizza in NYC.
Dan76 wrote a review on September 27, 2008 3:11 PM
Grimaldi's is good pizza no doubt. I lived in DUMBO before there was anything else to eat and we would get it several times a week. Patsy was working there back then and would make sure to tear a hole in the paper bag when the pizza was to go so as to let the steam out. I don't think the quality has gone down hill too much, the servers are fast and efficient and get the job done. I don't wait in line, but still go back to the hood on a week night several times a year for a pepperoni mushroom...YUM.

have any of u ever tasted a plain pie from grimoldys? its so lame. it tastes like nothing. like they forgot to put salt in it. fascatis is way better. if u want old school try lombardis. and of course the ridiculous lines. but where else are tourists supposed to go. its the easy way out for every tourist/food show there is. grimaldis and the ice cream shop. they need to dig deeper.

Most people seem to be hating on the restaurant when they should be hating on the tourists. I would never wait in line to eat there but most of the time you can call and your pizza will be ready to take out in 10-20 minutes. The ingredients are tasty and fresh (I go for pepperoni and garlic) and the sauce, to me, is an upgrade from the overly stewed, overly oregano'd and dry basil stuff most places use. I live in the neighborhood and HATE the fact the the customers take up the whole damn sidewalk when waiting in line and never move out of the way for the people actually trying to WALK on the sidwalk. And I take offense to the comment about the customers being from the midwest (where I am from), my guess in 90% are from Jersey and probably actually from brooklyn before that. going to grimaldi's is their back to brooklyn moment.
