Bubby's Brooklyn

Bubby's is known for their signature pies (like the New York State Apple Whiskey Crumble) and they have a pie social every September, but according to Citysearch's Allison Austin, "The brunch menu is the biggest draw. Kids love the fluffy sourdough pancakes with fresh fruit and the raisin French toast; parents should order the lox scramble or the eggs Florentine." Still, the kid-friendly breakfast doesn't suit everyone. Time Out New York says, "On weekend mornings, swarms of toddlers, their frazzled parents and the no-brunch-reservations policy add up to barely contained chaos. For a touch of calm, try a weekday dinner of easy favorites: alphabet soup, mac and cheese, and juicy, slow-cooked barbecued ribs."
Bubby's is now closed to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, prime time for weddings and private events. Their website asks customers to always call ahead to confirm they're open because "it’s a pain in the butt to get down here and find out we are closed to the public, ya know." New York magazine describes the event space: "Nestled on the water between the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan Bridge, Bubby's offers sweeping views of the city. The dining room can accommodate up to 300 guests for the reception and can provide smaller spaces for the rehearsal dinner, cocktail hour, or post-wedding brunch."
Whether you're bringing the baby or throwing a party there, the Bubby's photobooth is a big hit among wedding guests and little kids alike. What are your thoughts on this place?

Brunch is fine if you need a place to go with kids but the food's nothing particularly memorable in my experience.

Went once (dinner and not crowded) and will never go back - worst food I have ever had in Brooklyn! And the service was bad too!

Terrible service. Servicable food [barely].
Staff attitude ranges from rude to oblivious. Ditto for the fellow diners & their brats.
Awful environment - noisy, cold, dirty [tables left covered in dirty dishes for hours].
Will never go there again.

The food is terrible and extremely overpriced.
I have brought my kid there a few times for brunch. The only attraction to the place is that it's so bad that only people with kids seem to be there, so nobody cares if your kid is loud.

A huge disappointment. That space deserves much much better.

Never been to the place, but above reviews seem to confirm my suspicions: when it comes to restaurateur’s success location/views/atmosphere will trump food quality every time. Even (especially?) in New York.

can someone tell me what was occupying that space before bubbys - was it a night club? sure looks that way....
Prodigal_Son wrote a review on September 17, 2008 2:27 PM
hey bowl of um, dicks
It was a nighclub/bar for a short period during the dot com years. I want to say 98-2000? I say the dot com years because thats who a lot of the patrons were and also I believe some of the folks running it. Also, it was around the time the artists were leaving DUMBO and all the assholes moved in.
I don't remember the name.
Bubbys...
The pies are truly sublime. The brunch at one point was great if you don't mind spotty service and 400 screaming children running around. Lunch and dinner in the beginning were pretty good actually. But it fell off long ago. I went in for a burger a year or so ago and walked out after one bite.

On the plus side, we went to a great wedding reception last summer--it's a nice locale for that, and everything was on the up and up. On the minus side, my wife and I had dinner there last December, and woke up with food poisoning the next morning. I doubt we'll be returning, unless another friend gets hitched there.

That is such a risky move, closing those nights. We'll see what happens...

Before it was a nightclub, it was a sea food restaurant. I can't remember the name. It was one of the first, and only things down there at the time. They used to have a shuttle bus that ran from the corner of Jay St and Willoughby, at the B26, B61 stop. It was for the city office workers who worked in some kind of municipal building which I think was also in 1 Main. Anway, the food was pretty good, but expensive, and they also make most of their money on wedding receptions and parties. It is a great space.

u girls are all snobs. u rag on bubbys like they were some snotty place trying to be hip or something. these guy provide a refuge in a hood were there arent a lot options, and none that are a value. depending on day/time, bubbys can be a place for family, brunch, drinks, dessert, group dinner and more. they do have problems with consistency because they struggle to stay in biz and they dont have their pick of the litter when it comes to staff. like the food, the staff is hit or miss. lately, most of the waitstaff is actually pretty cool. and when u feel like theyre ignoring u, its just because on weekdays, there's 1 waiter for the entire place. hey, no one said it was gonna be Bouley. just flag em down and ask for what u need. in terms of the food, its hit or miss too. but their lunch is usually good. and now all their burgers are grass-fed beef. in addition to burgers, the homemade sodas and of course the pies are excellent. so it aint the place to go for a hot date. but if you're with a group or you're with the kids, there is no better place in west brooklyn to go.
and for those who say its "extremely overpriced", where have u been eating? ps 8 cafeteria?
