Beast

"The dungeon-like front room has dimly lit banquets perfect for first-daters and a dark wood bar... while a sea-green back room is hung with ancient wall maps and iron chandeliers," writes Timothy Cooper in New York magazine. He also describe the size of Beast's small plates: "tapas-plus—larger portions than you’ll find in Spain, and definitely non-standard."
"[Chef Deborah] Bicknese's herb bread - rolled flat and charred chewy on the grill - has rightly earned the nickname crack bread among servers bombarded with requests for more. Save a few wedges for the wine-marinated and sautéed chorizo splashed and sweetened with brandy." says Dana Bowen in the New York Times. And Been Eating Around recommends the short ribs, which are "slowly braised with Blue Point Lager for hours. The meat was so tender that it falls off it's bone with a feather touch. The price was very reasonable for the quality of food you get."
Gothamist's Younga Park adds, "Beast's brunch fare is full of refreshing options, with sauteed polenta earning a place on the menu just next to the rum-spiked caramelized apple french toast. 'The standard' offers a choice of thick cut bacon, boar or chicken apple sausage with your eggs and greens, the latter of which develops a lovely smoky sweetness when grilled." What's your take on Beast?

the fried manchego cheese bites are worth the trip alone, but all the small plates they offer up here are pretty solid. good batch of beers too.

Beast is fantastic! I love this place. The food is good, the atmosphere is perfect. The wine list is affordable and varied. There are a couple of hostesses that don't have the best bedside manner, but I deal with it. A sister restaurant is supposed to be opening across the street, but not sure what the estimated opening date is for that.

I've only visited weeknights when not crowded, and had terrific food. Love albarino, and they have one. recommend highly.

Very tasty food, decent selection of beer and wine. Wasn't thrilled with the service the one time I went - the bartender seemed annoyed with us for bringing in a ton of people and ordering a ton of food/drinks, which seems odd since, you know ... the more we spend, the more she earns in tips.
Probably just an off day though.

Definitely a neighborhood favorite - agree that the manchego bites are worth the price of admission and most of the rest of the menu is pretty good too (seem to especially remember a flank steak in some kind of garlicky paste).
Service is okay in that the servers are generally friendly - only complaint is that the food kind of tumbles out all at once - it would be nice if they could space it out a little so you didn't have 6 small plates on the table at once.

Part bar, part resto, always feels a little indecisive as to which it wants to be more. Certainly a nice place for a 10-person birthday party or the like, you can make noise, laid-back vibe, nice options with the small and larger plates. The food is not memorable in any real way though, which for a restaurant isn't amazing.

I've had several great brunches there. Would have had more, except there is usually a line.

I like having Beast in the neighborhood. Some things stand out, particularly the fried manchego, nothing has flopped. The vibe is cool and with a small plates menu, each meal tends to be interesting and varied.
