The Soul Spot

"Bare-bones and fluorescent-lit, this place looks like a hundred other storefront steam-table soul-food joints. But something extraordinary must be going on back in the kitchen," New York magazine's Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld write. Citysearch's Ben Williams adds, "The standard soul food menu is on offer, but the execution is anything but average and the servings are generous (each main course comes with two sides for less than $10)."
The Village Voice says that their favorite dishes include "smothered turkey wings, jerk chicken, 'Southern dipped' fried chicken, and, especially, the perfect catfish fillets covered with a spice-laden crumb mixture, which had obviously been cooked to order." And Chowhound EJC, a "transplanted Southerner," vouches for the place: "I love the okra, corn, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, green beans, meatloaf, fried/baked chicken, etc. Plantains and rice & peas are occasionally dry, and the cornbread is sweeter than I'm used to, but on the whole, it's great affordable southern food. And they have real sweet tea!" How would you rate the Soul Spot's menu against Brooklyn's best cheap eats?

thought it was very run of mill for soul food. once was enough given the zero ambience or service, and food was about right for the price (neither of which were great).

Goldie, I'm all for differing opinions..but
If Brooklyn has a better soul food joint, please fill us in. Seriously, for Brooklyn, I don't know of any. Not one. Love this place.

Went once--never felt the reason to go back. Every time I ordered a particular item they told me they were out of it--and what they did finally have was merely OK. The service wasn't friendly to top it off.

Never been to this place but Brawta on Atlantic Ave near Bond is very good. Now they are pricey but the food is good.

For soul food, Average = Bad. You've got me, P.Son. Since Hush Puppy's on Myrtle closed years ago, I just don't buy soul food in Brooklyn.

For the portions they give, its not a bad value if your new to brooklyn and dont know where to get soul food. You get the best soul food from restaurants on flatbush avenue between winthrop and nostrand avenue. There is also a great place on atlantic ave and rockaway. However, 99% of the people that read this blog wont go into those areas.

Prodigal Son, I've only eaten at one other on Vanderbilt and its not worth mentioning either. The ratings arent about relativity only within Brooklyn or only on Atlantic. Your comment doensn't make much sense. I guess I should give it a 5 star rating since its the best soul food place on that block.

What's a "resaurant" ???
Anyways - Mr. B, any chance we can get some reviews on some of the more prominent restaurants in each Brooklyn neighborhood? Maybe more stuff in N Brooklyn (Dressler comes to mind, probably the best restaurant I've been to in Brooklyn) and some more off the beaten trail places in neighborhoods southern brooklyn? I realize it may not be a good idea for "restaurant of the day" necessarily, as if no one has been there, there will be no discussion!
Just my .02

Been here plenty of times, as there's really no other soul food place nearby. And seriously, LOL! to the the Brawta comment. I won't even go into there as race stuff is volatile here as it is.
Back to point: Fried chicken is good, and tastes homemade and really crispy. Mac n cheese is good, but your typical stuff nothing transcendent. Fish is good.. eh I guess for the area you really can't go wrong. It's cheap soul food served up in hot pans and probably not too fresh, but definitely hits the spot if you want greasy and salty fried food.

a gigantic meal for a good price, and the lemonade is tasty too.

Tasty lemonade? That sounds odd. Wouldn't go for that myself. I like mine tart and clean flavored.

A Guest,
Just last week another reader was complaining that the restaurants we were doing were TOO mainstream. Can't win! Anyway, we're going to cover 250 restaurants in the first year, so there's room for everything. Dressler should be coming up pretty soon. We already did Diner here:
http://www.brownstoner.com/restaurants/2008/08/diner.php
Only 8 people contributed reviews on Diner though, whereas restaurants in the Brownstone areas have been getting 15-20, which is a lot more robust and, in the case of the numerical ratings, fairer. We've been to Diner way more than any other restaurant in Brooklyn, so we were a little surprised by that.

Very good food, but lacking any ambiance - really a take-out place.
