Stonehome Wine Bar

Stonehome%20Wine%20Bar.jpg
"The sensuously curved cherry-wood bar, the toffee-colored Ultrasuede banquettes, the flattering lighting, and music played at a volume that encourages conversation contribute to a sexy ambience that invites lingering. It’s a definite date place," writes Tina Barry for the Brooklyn Paper.

The New Yorker's Andrea Thompson writes, "Many wine bars relegate their foodstuffs to the side—a composed cheese plate here, slender panini there—and seem to be little more than pretentious watering holes. The best, though, like Stonehome Wine Bar, give the culinary as much attention as the oenological." A recent post from Chowhound starfish says, "I had a wonderful meal at Stonehome Wine Bar — very fresh, interesting dishes at reasonable prices and a nice atmosphere. I had braised pork cheeks with spaetzle and [my significant other] had well-prepared steak. Salads were great, and the lemon custard with huckleberries for dessert was memorable."

Jane Lerner of New York magazine comments on Stonehome's wine list: "The wisely-edited list of 200 bottles and around 40 by-the-glass choices leans toward France, Spain and Italy, but intriguing picks from California, Germany, and other further-off grape-growing regions also shine." Is this one of Brooklyn's best date spots, or what?

food was decent and well-presented, if falling short of a somewhat ambitious mark. wines were very nice and the bartender knowledgeable. does not quite make it as a "best date" spot for me, mostly due to a somewhat mid-90s suburban/hotel bar interior. i prefer my date spots lit low lights and with a little glamor or, at least, a couple dark and intimate corners.

Wine is fine but the food is AWFUL.

I joined Yelp solely to post about how bad the food was here.
100% serious.

zinka, that sucks. i didn't love the food but, well, they were trying.

by the way, totally confused about the bklyn paper review. it's not sexy in there. it's like an extra-fancy starbucks.

I'm not sure it's a Date spot. Other wise a great addition to the hood, especially for the small plates and the wine/beer/cava list.

I don't think it's a date spot at all. It's the kind of place you take your parents when they are in town.

Wine and food are both good, and the garden/patio out back (which no one has mentioned) is lovely in the summer. But I totally agree about the mid-90s decor--changing their light fixtures alone would be a HUGE improvement.

I beg to differ, if for "a date spot" you mean a place wher you can actually have a conversation with your date in civilized surroundings and actually understand what she says, and reverse, without him/her having to shout.... Stonehome has excellent food, great wines, and an "adult' atmosphere (not "parents" adult, post teen!)
Why don't we add a "noise" rating for restaurants, at long last????

The wine and ambience are lovely for a nice, mellow evening. I loved the food but thought the service was a bit lacking 2 out of 3 times I've been there. I agree the music volume makes it very comfortable to enjoy good conversation. I love having this place in the neighborhood.

Good wine, decent food, nice atmosphere. There's nothing else like it nearby, especially when you don't want a full meal and just want somewhere to go after a movie or performance at BAM. Having said this, I think the previous commenters have given it more stars than it deserves, especially when the comments have been somewhat negative.

I'd also be in favor of adding a "noise" rating (there are some places I simply won't go if I want to have an actual conversation over dinner because the decibel level is just too high), and perhaps a "drinks" rating as well (here, it would have been nice to include a rating of the wine, given that this place is a wine bar).

I've always enjoyed my food and drinks at Stonehome--it's a great neighborhood spot with a cute garden and friendly service. The only complaint I have is that they give you tiny pieces of cheese on the cheese plate (obviously a priority for me).

That said, this place is old news. It would be much more interesting to get some feedback on the many newer restaurants opening in Fort Greene and beyond, like Kif (love it!), General Greene (haven't been yet), A Bistro, etc. etc.

I really like Stonehome--very interesting and high quality food. Here's a good piece from the New Yorker:

Ironically, we've had some good meals, but not always good wine suggestions for the food!
