"The clean lines of this restaurant's cuisine match the graceful sway of the room with its exposed brick, shiny wood floors, mint colored walls, fancy sconces and garage-sized windows," writes Caryn Brooks for New York magazine. Back in 2005, New York Times restaurant critic Frank Bruni gave Stone Park Cafe a two-star review, naming their roasted marrow bones, a cold-weather specialty, among his recommended dishes. He also shows some love for a few year-round appetizers, such as the bluefish cakes and the "palm-size short-rib sandwich [which] arrived with a fried quail's egg perched atop the meat and poised to bathe it in an extra, unnecessary and wholly appreciated measure of moistness."

But Chowhounds aren't in agreement about this place. After one visit, thread-starter casspants writes, "The outside space is fantastic, but the waiters had a bit of an aloof, snobbish vibe. Also, my octopus salad was terrible--I couldn't even eat it." However, frequent Stone Park customer and fellow 'Hound Marion Morgenthal says, "We've never had a problem with the service, and the food is generally excellent. It works well for us because they have a really good burger for the 16 year old as well as the kind of food my husband and I prefer... And their brunch is really good--and really crowded!" Any other thoughts on this place?

Like the food, and like the outdoor seating in the summer. Not crazy about the seating the rest of the year. Especially if you're just a couple, you often get stuck at those tables by the bar. Never had a problem with service tho.

Who are these people who don't like Stone Park? Were they expecting plain potatoes like Grandma used to boil, and waiters who slap you on the back and tell dirty jokes? This is one of the finest restaurants you can get into without a jacket and tie. I can only imagine that that review was written by a rival restauranteur. Stone Park is one of my favorites, simply because the food is consistently excellent and the staff is very professional, with an intimate knowledge of the menu. The only complaint I've ever heard about the place is about their popularity; some nights it can take a hour's wait for a table! Still, it's well worth it.

One of the best restaurants in Brooklyn, hands down.

brikenny -- you can get into almost any restaurant without a jacket and tie! Nobu, Gotham, any of Danny Meyer's spots, 11 Madison, John-Georges, etc.

That said, the food is good but there has never been a dish that really bowled me over. Why anyone would want to sit out on the sidewalk is beyond me and denton is right about getting stuck near the bar if you are a couple.

I'll abstain from rating this as I was only there once and there was some crisis in the kitchen (the cook had cut his hand or something like that) that made things a little confused.

The staff did a decent job under the circumstances and the food (when it finally arrived) was fine.

I will likely go again some time.

One of those places that expects you to be grateful that you're eating there, and therefore offers little in the way of service. I went 4 times and then I stopped going almost 2 years ago. This is what I thought of my last experience there: expensive food and drink, but not well executed, with some holier-than-thou service to top it off. My cocktail came in a half empty martini glass (fill that puppy up for $11, pal) and was utterly flat and way too sweet. A bad omen.

Our thick pork chops were burned black on the outside, and raw on the inside. My wife's steak was rare although she asked for medium, and although she politely sent it back for more fire, it returned in the same bloody state. The corn gratin it came with was cold, right out of the walk-in or something. Our friend's salmon was also raw on the inside with tough and inedible chinese broccoli. They then served us cold "warm chocolate cake" and cold tart tatin.

When the bill came our lovely bottle of 2005 Calera Central Coast Pinot Noir, $33 was not there. That's nice, I thought - comp us the wine after a clearly screwed up dining experience. I let the waiter know I appreciated this gesture, and he took the check and added the $33, thanking me for my honesty.

I had a really negative experience there. After arriving on time for our reservation the Maitre D'/person in charge of the restaurant that night starting yelling at me out of nowhere stating that I had called to change my reservation and that there was no table for me at this time. He was beyond rude and barely apologized once it dawned on him that he was thinking of an entirely different reservation. I have never been treated like that in a restaurant before. We decided to stay despite the tirade and the food was excellent but I would never return following such treatment

Been to Stonepark only once, for Valentine's day. We had a positive experience-- food was good, service was nice, and the space was comfortable. Thing is, I can't remember what we ordered. Only complaint might be that the prices seemed somewhat high. Otherwise a good experience, and I would go back.

I've only had good experiences there with both food and service - in fact, management has gone out of its way to accommodate my (partially deaf) husband when we've gotten a table that won't work for him. I do agree that the food is overall very good but I've never had a real 'wow' memorable dish.

Been there 3 times in the past year under varying circumstances (just with the wife; with the wife and kids; with wife, kids, and another family). We kept coming back for a reason: its a solid, well-run joint.

I liked Stone Park when it first opened, but it really does take itself way too seriously. It is certainly not the finest restaurant in the neighborhood, or even in Park Slope. The food is usually good, but I've had some mediocre meals there. The staff is usually not particulary attentive, and it is overpriced.

I live very close to this place and never was able to get a repoire going despite having spent quite a bit of money there over the past few years.

At this point, I'll just go to Blue Ribbon.

Also, I agree it's a bad place to go if you're just going with 1 other person. Those tables by the bar suck.

On a side note, I walked by there on Friday night and the place was dead at 8:00. I looked at the menu and every single dish was over $25.00. Thinking it probably wouldn't be worth it, I decided to give Bellville a try for the first time in over a year just for the hell of it. Was decent, but I was sad to find out they are ditching their liquor license. When I walked home, it seemed a bit more busy, but still - very strange. It must be going downhill.

We used to really enjoy Stone Park, even taking out-of-town guests there. Their participation in Dine In Brooklyn for a few years running was a delight. However, as others have noted, there seems to be an attitude problem here, one that starts from the top. Try getting seated without a reservation and you can expect bondage and discipline from the owner. I've tried on more than one occasion, with several tables clearly vacant and won't try again. There are simply too many other good choices in the neighborhood (Al Di La, Applewood being my favorites...sure others have their preferences).

I was in the slope over the weekend, and it was dead; which I remember from when I lived there it always is in August. I'm sure the tanking economy will take its toll on these place too, though last time I tried to go on a Thursday in June there was no hope of getting a table. I agree with the theme that the food is pricy, good, but un-memorable. When I pass it feel like I should want to eat there again, but I don't know why. A good place when you're looking for a good place, not a favorite.

Great place. Love the food and service.

bkgorilla wrote a review on August 26, 2008 3:10 PM

One of, if not the only decent brunch in the slope. I've only had good experiences here with my wife. We have a baby and they've always been very accommodating in finding us a seat. everytime we go we manage to get a table w/o reservation

jabberjocky wrote a review on August 26, 2008 4:13 PM

I've been here several times, and never experienced less than stellar service - and have never made a reservation either. The food has always been very good, often exceptionally so.

Also - was there on Saturday night at 9pm and the place was packed Inside and out) so don't understand the comments about it being empty.

Our party of four had fantastic cocktails at the bar, served by a lovely, friendly bar-keep, and we were kept informed of how long our wait would be.. less than 15 minutes. At no point was any of the service "snooty", and this includes one of the owners, who gave us a taste of a cocktail that we were wondering about.

Been here at least 4 times. Food has always been good. Yes, price is a bit steep but the food quality has always been good. Eating apps at the bar is good for a quick "cheaper" meal when time is limited or when i've been solo. The sliders are quite filling. I've never experienced the pretentious vibe others have mentioned but then I could just be oblivious or not care what someone thinks.

I went for brunch, and I thought it was very mediocre and the service was sub par considering the high prices

bibini wrote a review on August 27, 2008 1:13 PM

Have been at least 20 times over the past 2 years -- food excellently prepared and a solid meal each time. The market menu is the perfect amount of food for the price point; a la carte is a bit high, but not outrageous for what you get. Service (including seating when crowded) isn't perfect unless you're "known" to the owners or staff, in which case they take care of you. But you know, to each his own on service -- if the food rocks you should be able to look past a few warts. If not, eat in Manhattan. But I disagree that there are many comparable choices in the neighborhood. Yes, there are other good places, but food-wise, SP comes out at or near the best.
