Patois

Patois.jpg
"Credited with being the restaurant that blew open Smith Street's potential as a fine dining destination... Patois still holds the title of best bistro on the block," writes Gabriella Gershenson for New York magazine. Since opening Patois in 1997, owners Alan Harding and Jim Mamary have opened over a dozen more bars and restaurants — and they've recently encountered some serious backlash — but Patois still has plenty of fans.

"This small storefront restaurant offers rich, gutsy bistro fare that can range from authentically French tripe stew — a mellow, wonderful dish, if not destined for popularity — to juicy pork chops and satisfying casseroles," says the NY Times. "Seafood shines at every turn: The generously sized crabcakes arrive crunchy on the outside and meaty on the inside, while tender scallops melt in the mouth," writes Erin Behan for Citysearch. However, on a Chowhound thread from earlier this year, one 'Hound called the cooking "decidedly mediocre" and another recalls having "one of the worst meals of recent memory" there.

The Paupered Chef hit Patois for their unlimited-coffee-and-mimosa brunch and makes a bold statement: "As far as South Brooklyn goes, Patois is cheap, very well-prepared, and you get to leave caffeinated and drunk. I'm willing to say: best brunch in Brooklyn." What do you think?

$12 sunday Brunch. This place rules.

Although I fully support Harding and Mamary, this place has gone downhill in recent years. Last time we had brunch: undercooked eggs (raw, cold whites, sent back twice, disgusting), clueless wait staff, and terribly slow service. My vote goes to Chestnut for the best brunch in South Brooklyn. They may not have mimosa refills, but their food is consistently AMAZING. Oatmeal pancakes, poached eggs on toast with the most delicious mushroom sauce ever....

I really want to like Patois, but despite several attempts I've never come away satisfied. I feel like the waitstaff (who are all perfectly kind) try to push appetizers and drinks on you which is kind of annoying and when the food comes it is really nothing special. It's not bad, per se, it's more blah and a little overpriced. The patio in the back is a nice and the dining room is cozy enough but something just misses the mark at Patois.

Brunch is the worst meal to eat. Weekend cooks, amateur waitstaff, and idiot NYers who think that sitting in a restaurant on a Sunday afternoon and getting drunk is somehow entertaining. Hipster tailgating. I HATE BRUNCH. AND So SHOULD YOU. BOYCOTT BRUNCH. BRUNCH FOOD SUCKS.

This place only deserves one word: meh.

I like your style, billyboomer.

Why can't we have a fabulous French Bistro in the area?

The service and food is subpar at Patois. And whatever you do don't try and order fried eggs with your steak and eggs, they won't do it.

Many of the pioneer restaurants (Bar Tabac and Frankies to name a few) are really starting to slide, poor food and poorer service. You're only as good as your competition time to step it up friends.

I agree with Chestnut, great service and the fresh baked goods that are complimentary start the meal off the right way. They also have a fab prix fixe during the week.

Patois is very hit or miss. I actually like their dinner service better than the brunch service. I've often had undercooked eggs and stale bread, which is why I haven't been back for months. It's a nicer place in the winter when the fireplace is crackling. Bar Tabac is a much better bistro.

The food was awful. Not much more can be said.

I knew there would be lots of hating on this place based on posts in various threads recently, but my experience wasn't bad in the two times I've been there. I had the burger once, which I thought was good, and the Moules Frites, which were acceptable. I know, we should expect more than acceptable and they weren't as good as I've had elsewhere, but I just don't dislike it here like others do.

apparently I was wrong.

This is the worst brunch place I've ever been to. The food is horrible.

Biff Champion wrote a review on August 5, 2008 3:25 PM

I've never been there for brunch, but I do dig the brass band they have playing outside by the patio. The kids seem to like it too.

If a guy named Pierre says a French bistro sucks, well, you gotta believe him :-)

UrbaneMeyer wrote a review on August 5, 2008 3:49 PM

Billy, good luck in your campaign to convince the world that getting drunk on the weekend isn't entertaining.

Biff Champion wrote a review on August 5, 2008 4:03 PM

I don't see anything wrong with having a few drinks with friends on a Sunday morning/afternoon, but I do agree that it's hard to think of brunch food that really stands out. Which is why it always amazes me in New York to see people lining up outside of certain places for an hour on Sunday morning to cram into some tiny hipster place when there are 5 other passable places within a 30 second walk that can make pancakes, french toast, eggs, etc. just as well. It's really hard to screw up that stuff.

What do you like to do on a Sunday billybooomer?

cobblehiller wrote a review on August 5, 2008 4:18 PM

Agree, the dinners I've had here are much better than brunches. The brunch is a little sloppy, and not that special for the fact that it's Patois. I'm not a big brunch out person - my better half usually cooks, so it was a big treat to go out to a nice Smith Street place. I was kinda disappointed. The service was ok, nothing special. Some of the chairs are a little rickety - especially for a big man in our group. And the walk ways are a little narrow for us, 3 very tall people, it feels a little tight to negotiate at times. But I'll go for dinner again.

Cafe Luluc, which is two blocks down, is also a much better bistro than Patois.

Bruin wrote a review on August 5, 2008 5:29 PM

We found Patois to be pretty average..We love Saul

sdrubbins wrote a review on August 5, 2008 5:30 PM

This place is very, very underrated. It really is one of those first few places that kicked off the Smith St. restaurant boom. Alas, it's suffered from its own invention - it's not the new, hot place on the block. I constantly walk by and see it nearly empty, and it boggles my mind. Their hangar steak was one of the best steaks I've ever had... not like Peter Luger's or that, but just scrumptious.

Never had brunch there, but generally I will note that there is good and bad brunch food. The pancakes at Liquors (RIP) - or should I say pancake, because you just got one huge, plate-sized pancake - with citrus curd and fresh fruit, was the best pancake I've ever had, anywhere.

Cafe Luluc actually has good pancakes as well.

You may have caught the article about these guys in the New York Times in early July, and while you might not like them or their restaurants, you've got to admire them hugely.

My favorite part of the article was their "homesteader strategy: find a block about to change, and start cookin'!"

Gorgeous.

Anyway, my favorite brunch spot in Brooklyn is Little D's (next to Bird). Love an early brunch in the garden.

treehouse wrote a review on August 6, 2008 12:51 PM

I agree this place is average. My meals here have been not bad but I have not had anything that has lured me back for more. The garden might be the only reason to come back but with much better food and much better gardens in bklyn, i don't see the point.
ps drinking on Sundays can be a beautiful thing Hipsters in Cobble Hill? Me thinks not.

rocky4 wrote a review on August 27, 2008 8:49 AM

I think my expectations were too high, so I didn't end up enjoying the meal, the ambience, or the price.

I probably won't go back, but I'm willing to give it a try if they beef up their vegetarian options a little more.
