"With its backyard-barbecue vibe and spacious leafy deck, Pacifico feels much farther than half a block from the Smith Street fray. Owner Jimmy Mamary (of Patois, Schnäck, and Gowanus Yacht Club fame) built the place on a lot once used for parking off-duty frankfurter carts," write New York magazine's Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld.

Citysearch's Erin Behan recommends their guacamole as a starter but isn't as jazzed about rest of the menu: "The sweet pineapple salsa almost overpowers the steak fajitas, and the veggie tamale lacks flavor, though a lively side of palm salad helps. Skip dessert and order another strong margarita instead." Blogger Nom Nom Nom NYC weighs in: "I'm in the the camp that Mexican food should be greasy and wonderful and total comfort food. This food wasn't wonderful or comfortable, but it definitely had the grease."

And while Amusing Bouche finds Pacifico's burritos disappointing, she'll keep going back for the atmosphere: "I still think the outdoor space at Pacifico is great, and it lends itself well to sipping margaritas and munching nachos in the sun with friends." How do you feel about this place?

Actually the fish tacos are not bad for the East Coast but had not one but two rats at our feet one evening while sitting outside. Both my friend and I felt something near our toes for awhile thinking our feet were accidentally touching until we looked down. They didn't scatter till we kicked them away.
When we told the waitress she laughed and said "oh yeah, that happens here."
No "can I get you another margarita" or anything.

I've been to many places all throughout Mexico and eaten outdoors in a lot of them. Come to think of it I never, ever saw any rats. There were peacocks roaming the grounds at Las Mananitas though.

Hey, rats are New Yorkers too. You never know- maybe the waitress offered them the margaritas seeing as you attacked 2 of our perfectly harmless brothers in fur.

Joking aside, I wonder how blase she would have been if she knew much about the health code?

I've eaten at Pacifico many times since it opened and I have enjoyed every meal! The sangria is tasty (and cheap) and the food is great, too. It's not fine dining, but great for a casual night out with a friend. Luckily, I have never experienced a rat. I gave the ambience 3 stars, only because it's really relaxed place. However, I love all the kitschy furniture!

Since they won't give you a table unless you order food, it's kind of hard to just have a margarita outside. Unless they've changed their seating policy. I remember going to Pacifico in the early evening once, looking to have a drink with a friend, and the waitress/hostess refused to seat us anywhere but at the bar, way in the back, indoors, even though the restaurant was empty.

Marci, you took the words right out of my mouth. Early afternoon, not a person in sight, yet no outside seating without ordering food. I could see if it were busy, but.... We kept on walking because frankly, the food's not worth the patio. Such a bummer, really, because I would probably drink my weight in margaritas if they'd just let me do it outside. The servers and bartenders have always been very cool, however.

Restaurant outdoor dining on patio or garden area. See rats. Gee - I wonder what the connection is. They usually wait until real quiet before coming out - but if hungry enough.....

entire menu is greasy and heavy. not a fan. killer margaritas though. don't sit inside unless you don't mind walking out smelling like the kitchen. ok so you can't drink outside on their patio? just order a basket of chips and guac. i think their guac is pretty decent. this place is great on a sunny saturday afternoon. fyi, mealtime brings out the stroller set.

Chiming in to agree that ambience is king at Pacifico. Everything tastes much better after a margarita, though.

I had the rat experience here as well. Sat down with a friend and all of our kids for a nice brunch on a sunny day. A huge rat appeared under the table, running over our feet and between all of our shopping bags. The wait staff was sympathetic about our desire to leave immediately and did not make us pay for the drinks we had ordered. I just can't go back.

Rats are usually not that bold. Wonder what's making them so here?

daveinbedstuy wrote a review on August 22, 2008 5:15 PM

Maybe its the margaritas east river!!!

Jack wrote a review on August 22, 2008 10:03 PM

You know what makes those rats bold? The abandoned or empty lots RIGHT NEXT to Pacifico. It cracks me up whenever I see ANYONE eat there. It's a damned rat party there all the time. Not to mention a homeless defecation zone as well.

treehouse wrote a review on August 23, 2008 1:30 AM

Rats ARE bold. Have you read "In the Wake of the Plague" or other similar books? For centuries Rats have been bold which is the reason disease has been able to transfer to our communities from theirs.

On another note, the food at Pacifico is gross but the outdoor area is appealing. It is a pleasant, outdoor option for the hood, rats aside.

How do I feel about Pacrapico? Ask one of the Mexican wait staff how they feel about the food there. My answer will be similar.

Eat before you go. Go for the drinks and atmosphere.

I have been there on Friday afternoon's after work because it opens earlier than other places. The food is awful, I only order the corn in order to get a table (2.99, decent and can fill up the empty place in my stomach before drinks). Once, we went in winter and it was freezing, and we were sitting by the fire - which was nice, but the staff refused to close the door because they were afraid of losing more customers. How about putting a big sign out front saying - "We Are Open." With those rat stories - I am never going back, never.

sdrubbins wrote a review on August 23, 2008 7:36 PM

I like eating there, just for the outdoor margaritas, and they actually carry the beer they're named after (Pacifico, best beer out of Mexico and one of the best beers anywhere). Never seen rats. However, the entrees are not great, and the service ranges wildly from friendly and attentive to very bad. And, a big problem in the early and late parts of the season: there is a big wall directly to the west, so it gets dark and cold well before the sun has actually set.

Still, outdoor dining is good dining, and the location is hard to beat, so I'll keep going to Pacifico.

I thought the place was OK and was thinking about going back this weekend, but the rat thing is a killer.

Combustiblegirl2 wrote a review on August 25, 2008 11:40 AM

I've eaten here more times than I can count and never seen a rat. The Margarita's are fantastic and they have the best ribs I've ever had in my life. They're usually a specialty item but I get them every time. I give the food four stars just for that dish alone.

When I moved to the neighborhood I was excited to have a mexican food restaurant nearby but after a few experiences there I refuse to return. As many of the commenters have noted, the food isn't great and the service can be bad if not outright rude. Even when the place is almost empty with only one or 2 tables of customers the waitstaff almost refuse to serve.

I'd recommend Lobo on Court St. instead. The food and service is better.

cobblehiller wrote a review on August 25, 2008 3:44 PM

Si, Lobo is much much better.

gardenenvy wrote a review on August 25, 2008 5:03 PM

The food is only so-so and the wait staff can be downright mean, but if you can put up with that, it's a great place to sit outside and swill margaritas on a warm summer night.

tarrahist wrote a review on July 12, 2009 12:05 PM

What's up with their salsa verde? It's like cilantro/jalapeno flavored water and is completely disgusting. It's not salsa verde. I went once on a Friday evening and we sat outside- no rats in sight. A friend liked his pulled pork sandwich. I chose a small plate with grilled asparagus, jalapeno cornbread and black beans. Mine was great. Despite liking my food, I don't know if I'll be back. The menu is pretty unimpressive and if you're a Mexican food restaurant that can't get salsa right.... well, what else do you have going for you?!
