Lucali

"Pizza lovers in the crisp-and-thin-is-better club have found a winner. [Pizza-maker Mark] Iacono's charred crust approaches cracker-like consistency with air bubbles that give the pie dimension," writes Erin Behan for Citysearch. According to Ed Levine at Serious Eats New York, the cheese here includes "mozzarella di bufala, a low-moisture full-cream mozzarella, and freshly grated grana padana," a combo that promises "a spectacular, simultaneously tangy and creamy topping for a pizza." The Paupered Chef adds, "The pepperoni comes from Esposito, the local pork store on Court Street, and it's some phenomenal stuff. Its spicy and salty kick adds just another dimension to an already layered pizza experience."
Some Chowhounds quibble about the sauce (one 'Hound calls it "a touch too sour for me" while another describes it as "tart/sweet wonderful") and others gripe about the long wait for a table. Lucali doesn't take reservations, but one of their regulars tells us that you don't have to wait on the sidewalk until your seat becomes available: "You can leave your phone number and they will call you when your table is ready. Just make sure you can get there right away."
Despite some minor complaints, there's generally nothin' but love for this neighborhood pizza spot. How would you rank it against the rest of Brooklyn's best pizzerias?

It's difficult to write a review of this place because it will only contribute towards making this place more popular and more difficult to get a table. The pizza and calzones are phenomenal. The crust is thin and has the right amount of char without it tasting burnt. The ambience is lovely and you can watch as the owner makes the pies. The wait staff is absolutely sweet. We've taken all of our friends their and it has always been perfect. I could never move away from Carroll Gardens thanks to this place. I hope they expand in the near future to keep up with the demand.

go late...after the strollers and screaming children have left ;-)

Ignore the stroller comment, total BS.
The pizza is very good and the calzones will put you in a cheese coma. It's ALWAYS packed, that's the downside. Also the pizza is not crisp, might have been originally, but those bad boys come out nowadays soft and limp. Still, I could care less because the dough is excellent, the sauce is brilliant and the cheese is better than any other in the area.
The only gripe I have is that whenever an overinflated 'foodie' describes any pizza joint they always place it against Difara. Like that gives their review more street cred. Makes me want to slap them. (rant over)

The food is excellent, I would say it's up there with Lombardi's and Totonno's, though I wish the menu had just a few more options (like a nice tricolore salad, perhaps, to make you feel better about all the cheese you're about to ingest). My one real gripe is that they need to come up with a better suggestion for customers needing to kill time while they wait for a table than to head over to Smith St. It's simply not as close/convenient as they might think.

Bstoner, Somehow my ratings were skewed. It should be as below.

yeah, ignore the stroller comment, because if you go too late (and by too late, I mean after 8pm), you're often shut out. I've been there multiple nights and overheard the hostess telling walk-ups that they weren't adding any more names to the list for the night.
love love love the pizza and the amazing interior, but do not love the sometimes two-hour wait. on occasion, they've even forgotten to call and we've luckily gone elsewhere because too much time has passed.

We ate their for the first time last Sunday (with baby and stroller, sorry.) Got there about 5:45 and were among the first group sat. The food was amazing, wait staff was friendly and quick and had a meal for 2 for under $40. Great experience, looking forward to going back, but definitely get there early, by the time we left the wait was over 2 hours.

Definitely the best strategy is to get there when they open. I live nearby and make it a point to run over on weekday nights when the weather is bad because there is less competition. I love both the pizza and calzone. The word is out so it is almost always crowded.

delicious, but eat it there. the pizza loses some of its zing if you take it home (which we do to avoid imposing with OUR stroller). love to watch iacono in his zen pie-making haze. the atmosphere is extremely appealing.

This place rocks. I grew up with Totonno's, moved to the hood and was happy enough with Patsy's, but now we're really set. Esposito's deserves an equal nod for the incredible pepperoni (and every other sausage product they make). It's too bad about the wait times but "Carol Gardens" at 5:12 is right - at least the neighbors can strategically get themselves in.

The BEST. Cheese + basil + garlic = unrivaled deliciousness. Sounds boring but it is sublime as is the ricotta calzone.
I only wish they could just offer an arugula salad with some shaved reggianno, lemon, and olive oil...how hard can it be?
First timers may be frustrated by the seemingly limited offerings but are immediately seduced upon eating their first bite of pie. Endure the wait...take away is good but not even comparable to the in-house version.
