Brooklyn Fish Camp

"Brick walls, tin ceilings and vintage black-and-white photos of a real fish camp in Florida retain the mess-hall chic of the original West Village location," writes Citysearch's Justin Hartung of Brooklyn Fish Camp.
For the most part, their fish-shack specialties get great reviews. The Amateur Gourmet loves their salt and pepper shrimp: "These were a revelation: whole shrimp, shell on, deep fried so the shell becomes crispy and highly edible, coated in salt and pepper and served with tartar sauce." And Karen Hudes of New York magazine says that their lobster roll "shines with vibrant, juicy hunks of lobster meat, lightly dressed on a sweet roll."
But some patrons complain about the high prices here. In a recent thread about the best lobster rolls in Brooklyn, our own new2hood said, "Brooklyn Fish Camp's lobster roll is the biggest ripoff in the city." And Brooklyian user ParkslopeCynic describes a recent dinner there: "Service was excellent, but got to wonder why less than a 1/4 lb of lobster roll was $33.00 and draft beer $6.00 a glass. Food wasn't anything to rave about." What's your take? Is this place splurge-worthy?

biggest gimmick and rip-off going.
you're better off going up to city island for seafood.

Wow, another completely unknown hole-in-the-wall restaurant! How do you guys find these secret little places!
(Seriously -- wouldn't this feature be a little more useful if you looked at restaurants that even, say, my parents who live in Arizona know about?)

I love the place. I've been here 4 times in the last year and had a very good experience each time. Food is great and staff are friendly.
I agree the lobster rolls are overpriced but excellent (although to be honest, I prefer smaller chunks of lobster in my roll).
They have a good basic menu and nice specials.
The daily selection of whole fish is great and the atmosphere is very comfortable.
Definitely not cheap but worth the extra money to me.
If you aren't a big fan of seafood, go somewhere else. If you like having a plate put in front of you and looking down at a whole grilled fish, definitely check this place out.

Despite the criticism, I can't say their lobster roll is under-rated, it's great. I had "Le Balthazar" raw bar triple decker platter at Balthazar yesterday and it would have been better with a fish camp lobster roll.

Yummy food, horrible service. Crab dip is almost worth dealing with the bad service but at an average of $50 a person I expect a certain standard. They never brought the second round of drinks during our dinner and they served our neighbors entrees before the starters. My advice would be dining at off peak times not on the weekend.

fassglass...there's an Applebees on Fulton near Nostrand

fassglass- Was that sarcasm in your post or were you serious? Either way, it's pretty funny.

dave-
to be fair, though Fassglass was rude, he/she has a point.
The restaurant selection is nothing revelatory.

love the food

Try the bible if you want revelation. What a shower of fools.

"The restaurant selection is nothing revelatory."
What language is this?
Pragonetti wrote a review on August 14, 2008 1:15 PM
Sometimes I love this place and other times I hate it. The service is really inconsistent.
The first time went I thought it was best seafood in the slope. That was a little over the top. The food is consistent, the service is spotty at best.
Get there early or they will be out of daily specials. The so called famous Lobster Rolls are alright (overpriced), but the basic fresh fish is good prepared how you like it and the peel and eat shrimp is a great starter.
If you have money burning hole in your pocket, a craving for fish and are in Park Slope. You will get a good meal.

The bible has a restaurant guide now? Any good cafes in Sodom?
dittoburg wrote a review on August 14, 2008 1:19 PM
I thought you knew that New York City was Sodom.
daveinbedstuy wrote a review on August 14, 2008 1:23 PM
Prodigal Son...I think one of the objectives here is to get "little known" places reviewed which are oftentimes missed by the NYTimes (thank God) and a lot of the others.
Is that a revelation??
SnarkSlope...Sodom's got the same old crappy dives as Gomorrha. Don't look back.
dittoburg wrote a review on August 14, 2008 1:37 PM
Prodigal son is over at Pat Robertson's site checking the reviews there.

The Manhattan version of this place is way better. The lobster role in Manhattan is made with what tastes like crème fraiche but in the Brooklyn location my lobster roll had a massive amount of cheap mayo in it! Overrated. OK service though.
daveinbedstuy wrote a review on August 14, 2008 1:43 PM
Mr Joist....you'd be tarred and feathered if you lived in Maine or Cape Cod and put creme fraiche on a lobster roll. As assinine as Manhattan Clam Chowder. Chriiiist
dittoburg wrote a review on August 14, 2008 1:44 PM
Thats because its well known that in Manhattan every position, including the lobster role, is played by an actor. In Brooklyn, they're keeping it real.

very good food, modern euro/new england retro trend blend

Fish Camp can't hold a candle to the original and far better - Pearl Oyster. Its good. I like them but not as good.
GWH wrote a review on August 14, 2008 2:14 PM
I've always had good service here. And this is the best place in the Slope for seafood. Hip feel inside. One of the best on 5th. You pay a bit more for an entree than other places but I feel its worth it.
Mr Joist wrote a review on August 14, 2008 2:15 PM
daveinbedstuy, 1:43pm:
My point was that the Manhattan role was lighter and let the lobster come through more than the Brooklyn version that had a heavy cheap mayo that made it taste like an expensive tuna fish sandwich.
Also, who cares what Ye Olde Timers in Maine or Cape Cod think of crème fraiche?! And FYI, half the good lobster roles in NY, Maine, wherever, use a combination of mayo and crème fraiche (including Pearl's) so you can actually taste what you paid $33 for ... the lobster.

I don't understand Fassglass's comment. This place is not unknown or a hole in the wall, it's well know in Brooklyn (for people who go out to eat relatively regularly) and Zagat rated. Why would it matter if it was not as well known anyway?
I ate here once. It was quite nice. I wasn't blown away but thought the service at lunch was good and the quality and preparation was quite good as well. I did not think it was over the top pricey, but from the description above, the lobster roll sounds quite expensive.
Prodigal_Son wrote a review on August 14, 2008 2:24 PM
C'mon folks...I thought you Brooklyn yuppies were an educated bunch. "Revelatory" needn't have any religious connotations.
Revelatory: "serving to reveal something" Merriam Webster
Used in a sentence?
The restaurant selection is nothing revelatory.
Peons...
dittoburg wrote a review on August 14, 2008 2:31 PM
So you call your self "prodigal son", and use the term "revelatory" and then get your pants in a twist because we imply religiosity on your part.
And unless you have brooklyn-restaurant-omniscience it can't fail to be revelatory by the standards of the Merriam Webster defintion you chose.

$33 for a lobster roll????? I looked at the menu and it said M/P...only in NYC my friends. You're being ripped off if its $33. Maybe you're paying extra for the creme fraiche. The less creme fraiche (and mayo for that matter) the better.
northsloperenter wrote a review on August 14, 2008 2:58 PM
Prodigal Son -- vocabulary without grammar is worthless. Your sentence has a noun modifying a noun.

its a damn good lobster roll. better than pearl oyster in my opinion. always had really nice waitstaff there too.
as for the restaurant selection, aren't we hoping ALL bk restaurants get their due? i want to know where the best lobster roll AND beef patties in town are.
fsrg wrote a review on August 14, 2008 4:02 PM
Excellent Food and it is only (way) overpriced if you get the Lobster Roll - here is an idea - dont order the lobster roll - besides why anyone would put ANYTHING on a good lobster much less Mayo and a roll is besides me (and I don't care what they do in Maine)
fassglass wrote a review on August 15, 2008 1:49 PM
oops, a little bit too late to make this clarification now, but I meant to say:
".. wouldn't this feature be a little more useful if you DIDN'T looked at restaurants that even, say, my parents who live in Arizona know about?"
Not only was I "rude," but a little non-sensical, too. Sorry on both accounts ...

Great food and tasty, well-chosen white wines. Hot and cold service and some dishes are priced to perfection, but their fried cod sandwich is cheap and may be the best dish on the menu.
