Barrio

Barrio.jpg
The Brooklyn Paper's Adam Rathe says that Barrio "isn’t just another Tex-Mex margarita joint." He raves about their "Yucatan shrimp, a plate of grilled prawns in cilantro-jalapeno marinade, topped with pickled onions and placed on a bed of calamari-studded coconut rice," and their sopes, "fried corn cakes topped with a pile of crabmeat and drizzled with a spicy salsa."

The general consensus of a recent Chowhound thread is that Barrio's service is prompt and friendly (and has improved since the restaurant first opened), their kids menu will please fussy eaters, and their grown-up menu is pretty solid, too. Chowhound jinx raves: "The guacamole was fantastic, perfectly spiced and fresh and a bit chunky as it should be... I had the pork tenderloin in the peanut mole which was fabulous...I thought the mole had just the right amount of heat, and the pork was perfectly cooked. The corn/cheese pudding that came with it was sublime...with every bite I swooned."

Still, several 'Hounds agree that the food is "overpriced for what you get." And while the Village Voice agrees about the pricing, they still recommend hitting Barrio for drinks: "Snag a place out on the deck and have a Perfecto Nestorindo, a drink made with agave, tamarind, pineapple and chile powder. It's on the expensive side ($8) but sometimes you get what you pay for."

Went for brunch, another time for cocktails. Food is inconsistent, but the drinks are great! Try Miracle Grill across the street for brunch, they have better huevos rancheros and blody mary's; if that's your shtick.

two cents...

I'm a big fan of Barrio. I've spent many nights at their Calle Ocho on the Upper West Side (amazing Sangria!), so I was thrilled to hear they'd be opening this place in Park Slope.

The guacamole is better than Rosa Mexicano and the Watermelon Mint Margarita is fantastic!! I love the Yucatan Shrimp and the Shrimp Ceviche.

I thought the service was exceptional, and I don't think the prices are outrageous at all. Quite reasonable actually...especially for the quality of food.

I also think they did a great job with the decor and outdoor area.

Now if they can just get someone to do something about that eyesore next door and give the corner building where Barrio lies a new paint job. I actually thought I heard that renovations were going to begin on the brownstone next door...anyone else hear that?

Best mexican in brooklyn. (besides red hook ballfields.)

Gf and I when Barrio opened. I felt the food was clean, fresh, tasty, and pricey nevertheless. Service staff was attentive and friendly, but bit too eager and perky -like surburbia perkiness if you know I mean. I really wanted the hanger steak with chimchurri sauce but they only served it on Fri or Sat, I forget. I thought the entree menu was bit limited on choices, so I had to compromise, but I forget now what I ended up ordering. Overall, its a good addition to Park Slope dining options, and I hope to go back and finally try that steak.

Food was so-so, overpriced, which was said many times before and the service was below par. Sorry we didn't drink and highly doubt we will return.

Good food, nice staff, pretty good service, a bit overpriced.
Overall it's a keeper; we will return though not as often as we would if prices were lower.

Great place for a relaxed late lunch/early dinner on the weekend. Service was prompt and friendly, food was great. Prices were in line with other places in the Slope.

My old pal Jerri (greetings old friend, wherever you are) raved about this place and my expectations were high for it. But I found the food average at best. The guacamole was excellent, but everything else was forgettable, including the service and the $10 or so margarita (which lasted literally two sips before I was left with a small glass chock full of ice).

We had dinner there a couple of weeks ago and it was great. The sangria was delicious and the guacamole was outstanding. One of our appetizers came out late so they comped it no questions asked. I would definitely return just for the overall look of the place and service. I don't feel it was overpriced since the prices are consistent with other neighborhood restaurants.

I've been many times and enjoyed brunch as well as dinner. I like the guacamole, although I would question the comparability to Rosa Mexicano without a side by side challenge. I certainly think that it is better than Maria's, and at least on par with Alma (I am still not happy about the recent menu change... The grilled shrimp were excellent). I have had the huevos rancheros which were quite good, as well as the steak which was excellent and the salmon which was quite good as well. My only complaint was the soft tacos instead of chips with the guacamole and last time I was there, they served chips...

The service has always been great when I was there and they have always been incredibly accommodating and friendly.

Lastly, as a life long resident of park slope, it is really great to see a restaurant in that space that is not only really good, but has a decent shot of prospering... Please, no more nail salons, even if they have free drinks with your manicure.

Hey Sj:

I work up near Rosa Mexicano near Lincoln Center and eat there quite a bit...love that place! Here's a blurb I found which says that the chef of Barrio is the same as Rosa (or was)...I must have known that subconsiously...

"Chef Adrian Leon (Rosa Mexicano, Zocalo, Zona Rosa) and restaurateur Spencer Rothschild (Rain, Calle Ocho, BLT Prime, Yushi) will open Barrio - a cool, casual Mexican joint serving margaritas, tacos, and more on Monday April 21st on Park Slope’s Seventh Avenue."

I went about 1 month after they opened and was very disappointed in the food. I love Mexican food and like Rosa Mexicano but found the food at Barrio uninspired. The ambiance was so-so and the service was about the same.

I am actually shocked about how many good reviews this place is getting.

It was forgettable at best. I am originally from the Southwest and I have been in search for authentic and good Mexican Food for 10 years in Brooklyn and Barrio was disappoint.

It was extremely overpriced. I never thought I would pay that much for enchilada in my life. The Guacamole was good, but I think that was $8 or something.

The Drinks were $10 a drink and were very small. I love Mexican food because it is inexpensive and you get decent size portions. This place fails and I will never return.

I did like sitting outside and the service was fine.

Go try Castros in Clinton Hill and or Tacos Nuevos Mexico, they may look a little sketchy but the food and drinks are great. Also notice that everyone eating there is Mexican.

I've been dragging my family to Mexican restaurants for 20 years.... I just want to say that Barrio is fantastic. Authentic Mexican, finally. Thank you. My kids were happy, my wife was happy, even my father, who is hard to please, was happy. We'll be back. Not too mention how convenient and nice it is to have in our neighborhood. Cheers! Barrio!

I highly recommend the Veggie Enchilada and empanadas, as well as the steak. Can't wait to try more.

I ate at Barrio about a month ago. The food and drinks were great, although a little pricey. The staff was really nice and attentive. I will def. eat there again! As for Miracle Grill - that place has good food, but the WORST service!!!

I met up with a group of friends at Barrio last weekend... there were about 6 of us, and we had a great time! We started off with the fresh guacamole and it comes with these little mini white corn tortillas that are light as air and so yummy. The drinks were great... my favorite is the watermelon mint margarita. Throughout the night we ordered various items off the menu and just shared everything. My personal favorites were the black bean empanadas, the fish tacos, and the baked vegetarian enchilada. Everyone raved about the food and the warm, yet lively atmosphere and we all agreed that we will definitely be going back for more.
