Frankies 457 Spuntino

Frankies%20457.jpg
With brick-exposed walls, pressed-tin ceilings, and soft, romantic lighting, Frankies makes a great date spot — as long as you don't mind waiting for a table. Gothamist's Younga Park writes: "On a recent rainy Wednesday night, the wait for a table at the Carroll Gardens restaurant was an hour long but worth the wait for anyone hankering after choice meats, cheeses, handmade sandwiches, small roasted-and-cured vegetable salads, and homemade pastas."

In 2005, Rob Patronite of New York magazine gave Frankies "The Best New Restaurant That Isn't Masa or Per Se" award, claiming that "Frank Castronovo and Frank Falcinelli make the best meatballs, braciole, and eggplant marinara around." And Eating for Brooklyn raves, "The chef's plate of cured meats contained perhaps the most ethereal proscuitto I've had." A few brunch items are added to the menu on Saturdays and Sundays, and while the Clinton Hill Gastronome wasn't crazy about their frittata, the blogger had better things to say about their "amazing" French toast: "The sugar in the batter melted to form a delicious caramelized crust on the bread."

This sliver of a restaurant may have you wondering where all the food is coming from. Megan Krigbaum of Edible Brooklyn explains, "The tiny open kitchen in the center of the restaurant has only about six square feet in which a handful of cooks maneuver, and it’s equipped with neither oven nor open flame. In fact, search the entire establishment, and there’s no fire to be found. The secret is that each morning at six a.m., the Frankies’ staff begins in the basement, making all of the dishes—including homemade pastas and sauces—over flame-free induction burners." Hot dishes are reheated on induction burners in the open kitchen.

Despite its small size, this kitchen can churn out enough food for a big crowd. Citysearch's Erin Behan writes."The turn-of-the century stable in the garden is available for private parties of up to 120 people."

great great little place - menu highlight is the Cavatelli w/ Sausage & browned sage butter - its not a huge plate, but it is one of the most delicious things i have ever tasted.

also, if there is a long wait, they will take your phone number and you can walk down the block and have a drink at abilene... they give you a call 5 minutes before your table is ready. not a bad way to spend an evening!

Love, love, love it. Other than the narrow waiting area by the bar, this is one of my favorite spots in town. And the private dining building in the back is the best spot I know of for a private party.

One of my favorites - the lines are brutal, but the staff is friendly and efficient and if you can squeeze in at the bar, the bartender will ply you with drinks and snacks while you wait. I had a dinner party in the carriage house out back a couple of years ago and people still mention it - fantastic food, great atmosphere - totally worth the (admittedly horrendous) wait.

Sorry, all I see when I look at his is that really ugly, dented security gate housing. Get rid of that eyesore! The historic storefront and decorative cornice would look really nice without it. Is crime that bad in Carroll Gardens?

sorry - but an hour wait for a table is never worth it or you have way too much free time.

Went there once for brunch - not going back. Service was bad - even though place was not busy. Frittata was boring. Waitress snippy.

A lower rating for ambiance 'cause it was packed to the gills on Saturday night. Hardly a crime. Very enjoyable. Attentive and friendly staff despite aforementioned packed-ness. Had a long wait but that was my call. They gave me a decent estimate of the wait and I sat in a bar until they called me. Highly recommended.

Only been there for lunch, but it's excellent, with a great outdoor garden

I ate there last year, before it was "discovered", and had a great meal, friendly service, and an enjoyable time. We had brunch, which was quite good, with fresh, tasty ingredients, especially the salad and fruits.

Had a car that day, which I don't usually have, so I haven't had an opportunity to go back, as it is far off my usual trails. I hope success hasn't spoiled them. I hope my review is still accurate.

Hmm - i think this is the one of the only restaurants in our neighb that has a really fun vibe - really it is beautifully done, and the garden out back is heavenly. That being said, the service is spotty (sometimes fine, sometimes awful - usually when in garden) and the food fine but nothing special. I understand why you would go there often as a fun neighborhood spot, but doesn't seem worth traveling. That being said, it is the only place in the are where I have consistently seen local celebs - gabriel byrnes, heath and michelle, paul giamatti.

I've been here several times for both lunch and dinner. The prices are extremely reasonable and the food is reliably great!

sorry, but this place is WWWWWAAAAYYYY over-rated...food is so so, but the place is fine looking and the staff cheerful.

Actually loved this place when I went last year to celebrate my birthday. But reheated food from as early as 6 in the morning? That just don't seem right... though for all I know it's commonplace.

It is SPUNTINO (snack in Italian!) and NOT Sputino (little spit? Not nice!)

Love eating here, especially when we get that front window table.

I once had a totally underwhelming dinner there, but recently reviewed a more or less terrific brunch there. http://gastronormous.com/?p=393

As much as I enjoyed the brunch, I do not think I would place the restaurant 3rd behind Masa and Per Se.

I have been to Frankies a number of times and the food and service are consistently solid. There is no one aspect of Frankies that wows me but the overall experience always seems to add up to more than the sum of its parts. It is one of those places I always walk away from having had a particularly nice evening, which is all that any great neighborhood restaurant could hope for.

Grendel wrote a review on July 16, 2008 4:48 PM

Although I wish their menu would change more with the seasons, I do love the "regulars" on the menu enough to keep coming back. And agreed that the garden is truly special. I would rec

Frankies is good but I would not go so far as to say it is excellent. I go back more for the cute setting than for a favorite dish. The cavatelli with sage butter should be much dreamier than is actually is. I enjoy pasta with sage butter and this one is lacking at best. Service has been slow on a few visits with no apologies.
That said, it is a charming place to take a visiting friend or to have a private party in the carriage house.

Adorable and fun but the food just isn't that special and the menu is tiny. We were disappointed.

mule wrote a review on July 16, 2008 10:16 PM

there should be a choice priced about right. you think its cheap at Frankies until you spent 80 dollars for virtually no food. menu limited...overrated ...nothing special...need a psychiatrist if you wait one hour or this

LiLi wrote a review on July 17, 2008 11:15 AM

I like it. The meatballs are my favorite and the antipasta plate is always good. The service has been nice and if the weather is nice I always wait for an outside table. I'd never chance it on a Saturday night but lunch and dinner during the week aren't bad.
