DuMont

Citysearch's J.P Anderson describes the scene at DuMont: "Young couples canoodle in mix-and-match, leather-upholstered booths, while candlelight flickers off the heavily painted stucco and wood-paneled walls. Service is friendly and well-paced." An old New York Times review by Sam Sifton recommends cozying up with their roasted chicken, "served in its crackling gold skin, with succulent meat tinctured with garlic and olive oil." On the side, whipped potatoes are "light on the fork and the palate, while deliciously heavy with butter and cream."
Chowhound bhill calls Dumont's DuMac & Cheese a combination of Cheddar, Gruyere, Parmesan, bacon and radiatore the best mac and cheese in Brooklyn and claims it's so good that "even a vegetarian friend makes it his one meat-eating exception." Fellow Chowhound briochebun thinks you should believe the hype and pay close attention to their greenmarket-fresh specials: "Dumont is absolutely great, and underrated by people who (understandably, I guess) think of it as just another Williamsburg hipster hangout. Recently I've had an amazing fig and proscuitto salad there, with a vinaigrette that tasted like essence of fig."
Free Williamsburg calls DuMont their "favorite Williamsburg restaurant" and also raves about their seasonal specialties: "This summer I enjoyed a wonderful herb-stuffed trout, and on Valentine's Day their entrees of coq au vin and bacon wrapped monkfish medallions were perfect for the occasion."
"But be prepared to wait in line for a table," warns New York magazine. "Come summer, the garden doubles the space."

THis is one of my three favorite restaurants in Wburg. Burger's obviously awesome and love the ribs too. Not too expensive. Good crowd. Would recommend it to anyone.

The food here is great. Really, I find the food consistently better than at Dressler. Outdoor seating is probably second best in the neighborhood (second only to Maracuja's back patio). The service can be a little snooty, and sometimes not very informed. Overall, one of the best places to eat in the city!

First restaurant I went to when I moved here. Just a little hole in the wall that welcomed us in from the bitter cold wind. They've gotten bigger, expanded and morphed into other projects... but even now when I go the food is just as good and the ambiance somehow still genuine.

I've only eaten at Dumont Burger, actually, but it's fine. A little spendy for what it is.

great burger - breakfast also came with some of the best little donuts i had in a while. may have been because it was so cold out, but the coffee was damn good too.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but DuMont (and DuMont Burger) has one of the best mac and cheese dishes in the city. Wasn't too impressed with the rest of the menu, but do enjoy going DuMont burger for their burgers and sandwiches. Yet, the outside garden is one of the best spots in Williamsburg.

Love this restaurant, as well as their sister restaurants DuMont Burger and Dressler (same owner). The mac and cheese and burgers at DuMont are indeed divine, and I love their skate as well. A Williamsburg favorite of mine.

Heather - you say spendy, but I'm interested where you think you can get a better burger for the price?
The dressing on the frisee salad they serve with the smoked trout is great

I've eaten here a few times, and the food is always great. The outside seating is very enjoyable on a spring/summer/fall evening. I've had waiters forget drink orders a few times... but it wasn't the end of the world - just took some reminding. Overall, I love this place.

Dittoburg, Williamsburg cafe has a better burger. About $2 cheaper? Not much of a difference, but it's more that the mac and cheese is like $14 that kills me.

I'll provide a bit of Forgotten NY-style info...
When DuMont opened, the sign looked terribly familiar, and I couldn't place it. After asking some of the staff, I found out that it was hanging on the front of a building down the block from my old apartment on Manhattan Avenue. The building was right where Bedford ends at Manhattan, and at the time it was empty (though the big windows were covered with old signs that said CHALICES, VESTMENTS, RELIGIOUS ARTICLES -- I guess it was a... religious articles store?).
I was curious about it and dug around and found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DuMont_Television_Network. I'm sure that location on Manhattan Ave was just a store that sold TVs, but the whole story about how the founder was this electronics nerd who eventually had one of the country's first television networks is pretty nifty. Plus, it was the home of the Cavalcade of Stars!
Now, it's the home of those little donuts they give you with brunch. Not necessarily an upgrade, not necessarily a downgrade. Just different.
