Peter Luger

Peter%20Luger.jpg
Last September, NY Times food critic Frank Bruni demoted Peter Luger's 3-star status to 2-stars, saying, "Peter Luger keeps up with its progeny and its peers. But that’s not the same thing as staying ahead." But he's comparing the place to Manhattan steakhouses — like Wolfgang’s, Benjamin Steak House, and Ben & Jack’s — which don't come anywhere near Luger's inimitable character.

"Diners don't even get menus unless they ask; waiters are tersely matter-of-fact... But don't complain too loudly: Luger's fiercely loyal regulars will defend the place as passionately as they would their own mothers," writes Allison Austin for Citysearch. "Expect loads of attitude and nothing in the way of decor or atmosphere (beer hall is the theme) -- but this 114-year-old institution is porterhouse heaven," Frommer's adds. The food here ain't cheap — expect to drop over $80 on steak for two (before you add sides like potatoes and creamed spinach, or the appetizer that A Hamburger Today refers to as "Luger's orgasm-inducing bacon"). And unless you have your own Peter Luger Card, you've got to pay in cash.

But really, decor and service aren't the point here — it's all about the beef. "The rumor about Peter Luger steak is that you can cut it with a butter knife. I'm not sure if that's true--some pieces were more tender than others. But let me say this: the best pieces were among the best pieces of steak I've eaten. The outsides were perfectly charred and the insides were as tender as could be," says the Amateur Gourmet. So, in comparison to other Brooklyn restaurants, how would you rate Peter Luger?

Peter Luger's is great for many reasons.

Best steak I have ever had. Service is to the point and efficient. A must for any steak lover!

Also try the burger for lunch. Now that is a great deal!

I'm not sure it makes sense to compare Peter Lugar to other restaurants. It is sui generis. Not necessarily better, but different. You don't go there because it's a good restaurant. You go there becaue it's Peter Lugar, and that's what you want.

zeebee_in_bklyn wrote a review on July 25, 2008 1:11 PM

Love their steak. All the Luger knockoffs try but can't match the original.

dittoburg wrote a review on July 25, 2008 1:19 PM

the tomato and onion would be better if they used viadalias, but the steak is, of course, excellent.

dittoburg wrote a review on July 25, 2008 1:20 PM

sorry about the extra "a" in the onions.

Increible Tender Juicy Steak. Excellent Martini's possible the best in the Borough, which the Steak is of course if not the best in the whole city.

Pain in the ass to get table but worth the wait. Wait staff famously rude, but who really cares once that plate of Steak arrives.

maxli wrote a review on July 25, 2008 1:31 PM

I tried it for the first time a few months ago, it was pretty bad. It was definitely NOT tender, and I had much juicier steaks.

BH76 wrote a review on July 25, 2008 1:49 PM

Not tender? I have heard people say that then found out they ordered it well done or medium well. The steak is great. We tried some of the offshoots but the flavor of the steak was not the same. Steak is the only thing that counts there.

Overrated. There is so much group-think with Luger's. The only reason people like this place is because you're supposed to like it. Its nice that there's a proper steakhouse in Brooklyn, but let's be honest, it’s a pain to get to, the surly waiters are passé and the food is as you would expect at an expensive steakhouse. Besides all the "Luger's is the Best! The BEST!" commentary, what's the attraction?

I think Luger's is past its prime and rests too much on its reputation. If you want an old school, unpretentious steakhouse, there are plenty of others that will treat you well and feed you right. Keens, Old Homestead… By the way, I've lived in Brooklyn for a long time and can't stand Manhattan, so this isn't some boro-war comment.

SnarkSlope wrote a review on July 25, 2008 2:07 PM

Don't believe the hype; the food here is simply awful. Perhaps it was once good in the distant past, but I suspect it has been coasting on nostalgia for a while now.

dittoburg wrote a review on July 25, 2008 2:10 PM

I can't beleive you would maintain that the steak at old homestead is better than at Luger's. Are you trying hard to prove your individuality?

Biff Champion wrote a review on July 25, 2008 2:19 PM

To each his/her own, but I agree with breuklyn. I'm not saying Old Homestead is better or worse, but there are a number of steakhouses I personally prefer over Lugers. While I don't believe the only reason people like this place is because you're supposed to like it (I'm sure many people really believe it's the best steak they've had), I do think some feel it's sacreligious to say anything bad about Luger's. To me, it's overrated. And I will spare everyone from repeating the rant I went on yesterday about service...

what's funny about it at this point is that there are now shockingly great very original restaurants all around it on Broadway. for williamsburg residents, why go there when you have Marlow and Sons, Diner, Dressler or Moto.

if you do go, try the Bridge Urban Winery down the block (towards the water, same side of the street). very unusual idea - it's a tasting room, and well done interior.

breuklyn wrote a review on July 25, 2008 3:21 PM

Yes dittoburg, I think I'm sooo unique becuase I've had a good experience at old homestead. You figured me out.

Though I haven't been to PL in more than a year, previous visits have all been vuat le voyage, as our French pals say.

The BROILED steaks are the best in the city. Period. The rest--good enough.

But one comes here for the steaks--not the sides, nor the decor. Service has always been perfectly satisfactory.

If one wants a "richer" dining experience, one can find other steak houses that will supply it.

But the steaks at them won't be as good.

BH76 wrote a review on July 25, 2008 3:53 PM

Went to Dressler's for the first time 2 weeks ago and can not understand the hype. OK food but not to go out of your way. For the prices you could go to a much better plae (Saul, Gotham etc.). And what is it with them measuring every pour at the bar -- odd to say the least!

Heather wrote a review on July 25, 2008 4:00 PM

I dunno, wine lover, sometimes it's nice to go somewhere with good food that's also been around forever, instead of going somewhere that's been open for a year and is trying to look like it's been around forever.

Well except for Diner, but that's a completely different eating experience.

wine lover wrote a review on July 25, 2008 4:36 PM

sure, heather, but moto and marlow and sons have such great great food with marvelous atmosphere.

I'm interested in all the comments about Luger's terse service. I have been there many times and every waiter has been polite, efficient and pleasant and in some cases, chatty. Come on guys - it's busy there. You don't expect the waiter to schmooze for an hour, do you? Besides, this is Brooklyn - we're direct, honest and to the point. Relax, have a great martini and a great steak and enjoy!

Steve wrote a review on July 25, 2008 11:20 PM

Since I used to own a restaurant I'm pretty tolerant when it comes to bad service. Sometimes you can have a bad night. I made a 9pm/Thursday night reservation at Luger's two weeks in advance. We arrived at 8:45pm and were directed to sit at the bar until our table was ready. 9pm, no table. 10pm, not table. 11pm, sorry folks. The kitchen's closed.

Meanwhile, groups of people who obviously had no reservations but were friends of the owners were seated.

I'll never patronize one of their restaurants again. There are better steakhouses who don't treat their customers like cattle.

pattunia wrote a review on July 26, 2008 4:34 AM

Under order the porterhouse for the table and do the sides! Great shrimp cocktail, tomato and onion, creamed spinach and fries. And those onion rolls, yum. Don't forget the schlag with your dessert.

It's not overrated. But you might want a nap afterwards.

BrooklynBear wrote a review on July 26, 2008 10:07 AM

Love the bacon. Saw Geraldo Rivera there last time, not that that should reflect poorly on the man.

I've had many steaks in this town, and I think Luger's still takes the cake for me.

treehouse wrote a review on July 27, 2008 2:20 PM

This is not the place to go for food. The food is fine. Like Galatrois in New Orleans, you come here for the old school charm and to enjoy a New York institution (if you can tolerate fat tourists and noisy kids at times). Some people swear by the steak, the sauce etc. It is good but oily and I think the bacon and little lambchops might be slightly better than the steak but it still offers nothing I dream of going back for. Good steak does not need sauce.
I am glad I tried it but I think a home cooked steak using excellent meat is better any day.

Brenda from Flatbush wrote a review on July 28, 2008 2:31 AM

We've gone there twice in last few years and been thrilled both times. I can take or leave the hard tomatoes and cloying creamed spinach, but, as the waiter says when he hands you your menu in a hollow gesture: "How do you want your steak?" We've had heart-of-gold tough-guy service every time, and the buttery pile of charred meat they slice up is heaven in flavor and texture. Of course they must have 'off' nights but we haven't hit one; my daughter, age 13, still speaks of them in hushed tones of reverence. And they are the real deal, pure Brooklyn, and bless 'em we remember before hipsterland when they felt like the only outpost of conviviality on the wild frontier...

meat: awesome. onion rolls: awesome. burger: a bargain. sides: fine. lighting: abhorrent. wine list: even worse.
