Franny's

"At Franny’s, a pizza isn’t just a pizza—it’s a political statement, the vehicle for expressing a worldview shared by husband-and-wife owners Andrew Feinberg and Francine Stephens, veterans of Savoy and as committed to the Chez Panissean tenets of local, sustainable agriculture as they are to the venerable tradition of artisanal pizza-making," write Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld of New York magazine.
"Toppings on the stellar thin-crust pizzas include vibrantly seasoned, tender meatballs; ricotta and parsley pesto with a refreshing accent of mint; and pancetta, ramps and fontina, which play off each other in pungent harmony," writes Karen Hudes for Citysearch. And Frank Bruni, of the NY Times, says, "A clam pizza at Franny’s isn’t one of those clumsy pies studded with shells...The clams have already been liberated and placed on a thick amalgam of clam juice and cream — a doubly clammy whammy. If you ever loved a bivalve, you owe yourself this romance."
Still, there's plenty of debate on Chowhound regarding whether Franny's is worth a visit. In a single thread, it's called "completely overrated, and certainly overpriced," "soulless," and "bland and boring" and, alternatively, "an asset to the neighborhood," "definitely worth trying," and "one of the top two or three best pizzas in New York." Which side are you on? And can anyone explain why their pizzas are served whole, rather than sliced? You'd think the hefty price tags on their pies would at least relieve customers from the cumbersome task of slicing at the table, no?

I've never eaten there, but this whole, food as political statement craze is starting to seriously annoy me.
Perhaps they don't slice the pizzas because they're having difficulty finding locally-made sustainable sources of stainless steel pizza knives?

The pizza and food overall is very good. The service is okay, but a bit pretentious for what it is. It's just pizza folks, no need for the attitude.
MsBrooklyn wrote a review on July 28, 2008 12:33 PM
The food's about as good as it gets IMO and they have great cocktails and beer. Yes it's expensive, but as an occasional treat I've found it to be well worth it. I've always had good service but tend to visit during off-periods since they don't take reservations.

Love Franny's. It is a neighborhood standby for me, as I live around the corner. Solid pizzas (clam and anchovie are favorites) and outstanding pastas. They also have a fantastic wine list. I think the issue is that expectations were raised after the Bruni two star NYTimes review. The review was so glowing that I think many go to Franny's expecting a revelatory experience, and so inevitable leave disappointed.

Wow...Pizza on Flatbush Avenue with pretentiousness and attitude? I guess there was a mutant real estate bubble. Never been there. Whats with not slicing the damn thing?
Biff Champion wrote a review on July 28, 2008 12:46 PM
And what exactly is the "political statement" and "worldview" shared by the owners?
Fjorder wrote a review on July 28, 2008 12:51 PM
I forget that we're on Flatbush Avenue when we're there. Love the pizza and tasty appetizers. We always sit at the bar and get great service. I could care less if they slice the pie or not, it tastes great.

Mediocre pizza that doesn't begin to justify the price, much less the hype.
Pragonetti wrote a review on July 28, 2008 1:20 PM
Horrible!
Not worth the price or the trouble. This place gets so much Hype so I have tried it a few times and every time I find it to be way too expensive for what you get. Generally too crowded with obnoxious people who are trying to check off a Times recommended restaurant. So many better pizza place with in blocks of Franny's.
Franny's should look at restaurant named Jules in PA that is growing quickly. That is how you make thin crust pizza and for the right price.

eh. it's fine, but the seriousness with which everything is sold/presented is painful. No one even smiles there.

One of my favorite places in Brooklyn.
And the pasta is delicious too!!!
Molly wrote a review on July 28, 2008 1:48 PM
Way hyped. The food is good, but not for what you are paying. Also, like I find with a lot of Brooklyn restaurants, they are unable to organize when they find themselves crowded - no organized list of who is waiting and slow turnover of tables (i.e. lots of unbussed tables and people waiting). As a former hostess at a chain restaurant (I realize not the same thing, but they can be learned from) - my manager would have been very upset.

Really, really good food but the service can be wanting. It's a bit expensive but they use top-quality ingredients and everything is made from scratch, which costs more.
ontheparkway wrote a review on July 28, 2008 2:00 PM
overrated, bigtime
randymcnally wrote a review on July 28, 2008 2:05 PM
great food - never had issue with service - i dont think its overpriced - $12-15 for a pizza aint so bad...you'd be hard priced to find one cheaper and better anywhere nearby..unless you want a slice from a slice shop. this isnt that duh
LilBitOfLuck wrote a review on July 28, 2008 2:19 PM
the pizza was fine but definitely got a condescending attitude from server. I think my choice of toppings wasn't daring enough for her. that plus the fuss of getting a seat and cost made my first visit my only.
tiptoe wrote a review on July 28, 2008 2:24 PM
Better there once, won't be back. Scratching my head as to how one pizza, one glass of wine and a salad can set you back $50. And the pizza wasn't that great. Seriously, I live so close I could be there every night, but it just isn't worth it IMO. Would rather make the trip into Manhattan for John's or Arturo's.
Biff Champion wrote a review on July 28, 2008 2:29 PM
tiptoe, I prefer Lombardi's over John's and Arturo's (although they're decent too) and I personally think Grimaldi's is extremely overrated.

Delicious food, but defintely overpriced. The wine selection is typically diverse and features some interesting options.
ctinbklyn wrote a review on July 28, 2008 3:03 PM
Best restaurant in Brooklyn. It's constantly changing, market-driven menu is a real treat and unusual. Every time you go there, you are guaranteed a new experience. The staff has always been exceptionally accommodating to me and my entire family, including two young children. Cocktails are terrific and unique and the wine list is exceptional. People judge Franny's as if it were a pizza restaurant, which it isn't. I would agree that prices are high for the smallish portions.

Where do they get local anchovies and olive oil?

Love it love it love it love it love it. Especially the back garden. Try the clam pizza. Divine.
superstooper wrote a review on July 28, 2008 3:35 PM
The food at Franny's is absolutely brilliant. They are committed to using fresh, seasonal greenmarket ingredients and the finest artisanal products. The staff is very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. Every wait person knows the wine list and can speak about the selection with confidence. The wine list incidentally is very good- one of my favs in Brooklyn. The pizza is great (on rare occasion a bit dark for my taste) but it is the appetizers and the pasta that wow me most. All said- it is one of the best restaurants in Brooklyn. I must also add, regretfully, that I am often stunned by the bill when it comes and I am not a cheapy.
daveinbedstuy wrote a review on July 28, 2008 3:36 PM
Never heard of a clam pizza served with the shells Mr. Bruni!!! Who the hell does that???? Lombardi's is #1 and Johns is # 2 but there's a fantastic very thin crust pizza served by Fresco by Scotto...you can get it take out next door at Fresco On The Go..52nd between Park & Madison
superstooper wrote a review on July 28, 2008 3:39 PM
Just to add that I tried Roberta's in Bushwick and the pizza is darn good especially at 8 bucks a pie.
BH76 wrote a review on July 28, 2008 3:45 PM
The most pretentious "hostesses" anywhere (they need to go to charm school). You come in and ask how long a wait -- they will not tell you until they have your name. Then they stroll into the back, stand for a few minutes staring into space, talk to others, and come back and stare at the list (does not matter if there is one name or 10) and say 45 min. to an hour. What the? All they have to say is that there is a wait if at least 30 minutes to an hour! That's enough to let me decide. Instead, you waste 10 minutes in there instead of going elsewhere! Sometimes there are empty tables but they will not seat you becasue the kitchen is backed up!!!! You are not allowed to sit and have a drink until the kitchen says so! You have to stand (bar is always filled). What kind of nonsense is this! However, on those rare times we can get in, we do enjoy the pizza!
billyboomer wrote a review on July 28, 2008 4:07 PM
I agree about the service. There are empty tables and yet it takes the hostesses a good 15 minutes to decide to seat someone. It is annoying. Its Like they cannot make a decision and they wonder around the restaurant like they have forgotten what they are supposed to do. Also need to get 2 bartenders. Wine is good but need more cheaper choices. Hey Franny go to Sip and buy some cheap wine. You gotta have more than one bottle on the menu under 40. That being said the appetizers are the best around. Constantly good and inventive. Pizza is good too. And yes it is 15 per pie so what. whatever.you go and spend 19 on platter of raw fish so stop your complaining.

I've never heard the phrase "doubly clammy whammy" (and hope I never hear it again).

Tasty personal pizzas. Yummy small plates that are, yes, small. Pasta is good and the wine is nicely chosen. It can get very loud (bad acoustics) and the service can be absent-minded. Very good for Flatbush, good for Prospect Heights, "meh" for Brooklyn in general.
phrooch wrote a review on July 28, 2008 11:37 PM
The pizza's good, but the wine is really overpriced. I live around the corner, but I head to Amorino instead, which is more low-key and doesn't have the wait. Even though I rarely end up eating at Franny's, I can't imagine calling the pizza bad- it's a certain style that the owners are passionate about and which they pull off well. Maybe you don't like it, but if it the place makes you angry, then you probably have too much time on your hand.
I did have an experience there that is probably unique. My cat went missing briefly, and when I told the owner that it could have gotten on to her property, she was really concerned. It was really sweet!

I'm adding to the crowd who feels this place is over-rated. Been there once and the food was NOT worth the wait or hassle. Not bad, mind you, but not worth a trip back.
newbie12222 wrote a review on July 29, 2008 12:39 PM
Been there once when they opened. Great pizza no doubt, but worth $19/22 for single serving size? Maybe. But, I just couldn't stand the snobbish & elite air from the waitstaff. Definitly not Brooklyn style at all.
However, been going to LUCALI ever since to get my gourmet pizza fix. Great pizza/ambience/people...and legend in making, perhaps, next Domenico?

I had one good meal here. I made the mistake to come back on a friday night and was treated badly and our pricey pizzas were burnt on the bottom and were quite bitter. We should have sent it back but the process had already taken a couple hours and we were starving. The ingredients are nice but these are not flatbush prices. The waitress (who was one of the owners) was snarky with us which made us vow to never come back. I'll stick to Lucali for pie and Lupa or Aurora for Italian worth the price.

I absolutely love Franny's. The appetizer/small plates portion of the menu has been different every time I've been there (which has been a lot). They are really inventive and yet straight forward with the starters. The quality of the ingredients is obvious. The pizza is delicious (i do wish they'd cut it), and the pastas are to die for. They have excellent cocktails--try the Brooklyn, and the bartenders are ususally fantastic (though I am very sad Woody has left; he was a true professional and great guy). I usually sit at the bar because it is such a nice experience. This is by far the restaurant I have visited the most in Brooklyn.
