Back in 2000, New York magazine named Christie's home of the best Jamaican patty in the city — and this no-frills eatery remains a go-to spot for delicious and filling cheap eats. For those who aren't familiar, their patties are large, flaky, yellow pastries stuffed with beef, chicken, or vegetables.

Peter Meehan of the New York Times favors the beef filling: "It is moister and more flavorful than the very respectable chicken patty. (Both are $1.85.) Allspice lends an aromatic note to both; ground black pepper and chopped Scotch bonnet peppers tag-team for a double-fisted — but not overwhelming — punch of piquancy; and a splash of vinegar tempers the fattiness of the meat." Still, it's hard to knock the veggie patties — SuperVegan's Red Lurcher says, "The veggie patties are veggie, not soy-chunk, so you're mostly getting cabbage and carrots rather than faux-meat… A patty and coco bread combo (they slice the bread and put the patty inside) is the most calories you'll get anywhere for $2.50." Whatever patty you choose, you can wash it down with Christie's selection of Jamaican sodas and homemade juices — like Carrot Cucumber Peanut Punch.

And Chowhound brooklynmonkey recommends grabbing some extra coco bread for your next home-cooked brunch, "This stuff made *great* French toast. I sliced it lengthwise in half (one piece into thirds b/c it was thicker to start), and it worked perfectly. It has a nice mild flavor and it absorbed the egg mixture beautifully."

This place is the best! If you are really hungry get one of the Jerk Platters with Rice. Don't forget to order fresh baked coco bread. So Good!

The beef and chicken patty's are the best I have had in the city. It is also very well priced.

Excellent patties. Super flaky and packed with spices. This is not health food kids. I've been getting take out patties since before they moved to their present location. Grab a couple and take them down to the now evicted Mooneys for a beer. Good times.

Note: they are on vacation now, so don't head over without calling and seeing when they're due back.

the patties arnt the best in the area but they're huge and the coco bread is awesome. If you have 3 bucks and need to eat this is the place.

For some reason, my full-blooded Jamaican wife does not like their patties. She favors Golden Crust. Go figure.

DOW8000SP800, I pass a Golden Crust sometimes on my way home from work but never stopped in, despite the fact I've always loved Jamaican patties. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll be sure to try them there next time!

Christie's is okay, but the last time I was there a few weeks ago, the crust wasn't particularly flaky and they didn't have any with spicy fillings. For consistently good patties, and other Jamaican food, try Buff Patties.

Wojohowitz.....I totally agree with you.Christies patties arent as good as they were before he noved. They are drier, less meat filling and the crust is harder, Now in my opinion, the best patties are at Buff Patty on Myrtle Ave and Clermont. Moist, flavorful and the chicken patty definitely looks and tastes like chicken.Cheaper too.
