ChipShop

Chip%20Shop.jpg
Chipshop's three locations — in Park Slope, on Atlantic Avenue, and in Bay Ridge — share the same menu of British comfort food classics and an atmosphere that Citysearch's Rebecca Braverman describes as a "unique blend of punk-rock aesthetic and kid-friendly appeal (there's a $5 kids' menu)."

Michael Anstendig, the New York magazine writer who visited the Bay Ridge location, says, "Almost anything from the fryer satisfies, including a baseball-sized mac and cheese orb, meaty Myers of Keswick sausage, a slab of haggis, and even a Mars bar." Anstendig also recommends their signature battered cod, "a triangular chunk of fish that's fried to a delightful state of flaky, greaseless succulence," and the Welsh rarebit, which "puts ordinary grilled cheese to shame."

Another Chipshop specialty is the shamefully delicious deep-fried pizza. Adam Kuban of Slice says it tastes "like a combination of a pizza roll and a mozzarella stick," and he even has a video of the pizza-frying process on his blog. We like to balance all this deep-fried goodness with a $5 stilton, granny smith, and walnut side salad. The Park Slope and Atlantic Avenue locations also have a solid beer selection — and serve a full English breakfast on the weekends to help cure your hangover. (The Bay Ridge ChipShop is BYOB for now — but a liquor license is on the way.)

I think the food at the Chip Shop is consistantly excellent. I eat regularly at the one on at Atlantic, and ate all the time at the Park Slope location when I lived there. The fish is fresh, light and flaky. The chips, as they put ,it are "bloody lovely" and they're not lying. Also if you're not a big eater or just feel guilty about ingesting quite so much fried food you can order the kid's size fish and chips and then a side of the aforementioned stilton salad (which is huge for 5 bucks--I had it last night and it was so overstuffed it was falling off the plate) and you get a fantastic meal for $10. Top that off with a perfect pint of guiness. Mmmmm.

Love this place (Park Slope location) ... perfect for dinner or English breakfast. Good value too.

Also has a great selection of hard-to-find English candy bars and other products.

I love their four berry stew. Simply delicious.

dittoburg wrote a review on July 18, 2008 12:32 PM

yum

It's unique and somehow makes seemingly questionable tasting food combinations taste surprisingly yummy. Nice beer selection too. A wonderful guilty pleasure.

I frequent the one in Park Slope, love the hippy vibe and consistently decent food. Oh and the fried Twinkies rule

Sorry to rain on the parade, but we've tried the Park Slope and Atlantic Ave shops each and have been underwhelmed. Soggy, heavy food that left no one in my family the desire to try again.

I love this place. Went in the second they they were open and have been back often since.
The place right next door is a burger place now. They seem to try and copy chip shop by posting posters of US icons like billy joel and elvis. The owner is the same guy from the old resturant. They have been a burger place for the last 7 days.
im surprised brownstoner did not pick up on that.

I dont get to go here as often as I'd like as the wife is not so hot on the place. Admittedly being British makes me a slightly harsher critic perhaps but the food is good. I much prefer the breakfast to the fish and chips personally but it's really the cans of Iron bru that are the best !

zeebee_in_bklyn wrote a review on July 18, 2008 1:13 PM

Used to go to the Atlantic Avenue branch regularly. It's hard to find something lighter on the menu, so I stuck to the Welsh rarebit while the Spouse enjoyed the pies, fish 'n' chips and the fried Mars bar. Great beer and atmosphere but I've found better pub food elsewhere.

gardenenvy wrote a review on July 18, 2008 1:21 PM

They're good at what they do - fried everything - but you need a stomach of iron to make it through more than about a quarter serving without needing serious post-meal recovery time. Beer selection is almost good enough to offset super-cheesy English-themed decor (did you know that the Beatles AND the Rolling Stones are from Great Britain?!?)

BobinBklyn wrote a review on July 18, 2008 1:41 PM

Completely overrated. Soggy, overpriced and disappointing.

Flatbushrising wrote a review on July 18, 2008 2:04 PM

I've been going to both since they opened. Last time it was with a large group of Brits who live in NJ - they felt it well worth the hours drive.
Old Speckled Hen is one of my favorites and they always seem to have it on tap.

My only complaint - One time my Spotted Dick only had one spot.

dittoburg wrote a review on July 18, 2008 2:08 PM

Of course its soggy!

jeeze.

The ChipShop is what it is--a pub. Nothing fancy, but it accomplishes everything it sets out to do, which is recreate a British pub in a NY setting. Love the fish and chips, but that's all I've ever had there. But that's pretty much all I ever order in British pubs anyhow.

SnarkSlope wrote a review on July 18, 2008 2:29 PM

Good fish. The chips, oddly enough, are pretty hit-or-miss.

mattt wrote a review on July 18, 2008 2:34 PM

All of these reviews miss the best things on the menu. Personally, I think the fish-n-chips are a little overrated, but if you must have it, have the plaice, which is far superior to the cod. I avoid the fried fish though. No, the best menu items are the chicken curry, shephards pie, the lamb stew, the chicken/mushroom and steak/kidney pies. Oh, and the mac and cheese with sausage and peas. And the variety of great beer is near unparalleled.

I'm with the Brit. They ain't no real chips!

Action Jackson wrote a review on July 18, 2008 3:32 PM

GAAREEEEZZZZY!

And agreed, those are not chips in my book. Too bad, since the fish could be great.

dittoburg wrote a review on July 18, 2008 4:10 PM

Gotta disagree, the chips are real and how they should be. Have you ever been to a chip shop in Leeds?

Biff Champion wrote a review on July 18, 2008 4:14 PM

dittoburg, I concur. I've been to chip shops in Ireland, England and Scotland and the chips at The Chip Shop are much more similar to those than most other restaurants in the city. They aren't my personal favorite - I actually prefer the ones such as those at Pastis - but they are definitely closer to "authentic" English pub chips.

heck_of_a_job_brownie wrote a review on July 18, 2008 5:02 PM

Would've given it 4 stars for food and ambience, but I feel like I have to offset low marks left by people who apparently expected "light" items on the menu of an EFFING ENGLISH PUB, you bloody wankers you.

Delurking to say I love the Atlantic location as it's a bit bigger than the PS one. One of the few brunch spots I can go to with my toddler and not feel overly crowded or that the waitstaff wish us gone.
Also- strongbow on tap and meat pie, yum! The steak and onion is my favorite.

denton wrote a review on July 18, 2008 7:35 PM

I went into the PS place shortly after it opened and ordered the fish and chips. Now understand I'm not one of these guys who can't handle a little grease with the food, but this was way over my limit. Way too greasy.

southslope wrote a review on July 19, 2008 12:58 PM

Grease is good....sometimes. Better beer at the atlantic shoppe.

Steve wrote a review on July 19, 2008 11:40 PM

I ordered fish and chips from the Bay Ridge location and thought it was both very good and reasonably priced. And it was delivered hot, not soggy warm.

Unfortunately, I started a low fat/carbo diet a few days afterwards and I'm sticking to it so no fried foods or chips for me for a while.

I've seen some negative reviews of restaurants appear only to be *deleted* shortly thereafter. Does anyone know why this is happening? Are these restaurants being viewed as actual/potential advertisers on this site? Something isn't kosher here.

denton wrote a review on July 20, 2008 7:05 PM

jabeau, I left a pretty bad review and it seems some others did too. Mine is still there.

Mamacita wrote a review on July 21, 2008 11:07 AM

Love chipshop!
I just took an out of town guest there this weekend. Had the fried mac n' cheese with a "kids" portion of the wild mushroom Shepard's pie. It was amazing. Also ordered was the bangers and mash and deep fried pizza. Tons of deliciously greasy food and a cold beer to wash it down.

pop pop wrote a review on July 21, 2008 11:36 AM

The wild mushroom shepherd's pie has a wonderful, rich flavor. I only eat here on the 4th of July, so I don't die of a heart attack. My one wish is that they had sticky toffee pudding.

Pragonetti wrote a review on July 21, 2008 3:21 PM

It was very good! I was not really in the mood for heavy food when I went, but it was great.

Molly wrote a review on July 28, 2008 1:52 PM

Always slightly disappointed and I don't know why. The vibe of the place just doesn't hit the right note. Also, I can never eat a full serving of whatever they serve, and so I never go. But, if you are looking for authenticity as far as food - you can't get any better!
